Girl Meets Change: Truths to Carry You Through Life's Transitions

Rate this book

Whether chosen or unexpected, all change brings stress. Kristen Strong knows about change--especially the kind you didn't choose. Over the years, she's fought hard to learn an important truth: change is not something to be feared but something to be received as a blessing from a God who works through it, not in spite of it.

In this hope-filled book, Kristen invites you to see all the ways you are loved and cared for in the midst of change. She walks alongside you as a friend, gently ushering you toward a new view of change, one that meets you at the crossroads of your own sense of anxiety and God's sense of purpose. With practical advice for coping in every part of life, she draws from her own experiences, the stories of others, and stories from Scripture to help you find contentment, purpose, and renewed strength.

I appreciated a lot of the core truths in this book, especially since the book was written by someone who hated change herself. My problem was I didn't come away feeling like I had a lot of practical applications on how to help myself overcome change. But it was encouraging, which was enough. <3

Sweet, personal, and honest.

I saw the cover of this book first (yes, I've always got my eye toward design) and I just loved what it represented. The seasons, change, new life. All of it! Then I got around to reading the title and thought this was something I should read.

Right off the bat I connected with what Kristen was saying--how she pinpointed what I'm sure a lot of women feel. Change is hard. You may be one of those women who loves change (as I'd say I do in some cases) but Kirsten pointed out that change for change's sake isn't really good change. It's all in how we view and meet the change that matters.

From a devotional standpoint I did enjoy the book, though it took me much too long to finish it. I think this was somewhat due to busyness, other reading/work I had, and some what do to lack of extreme connection. For me, a devotional book really needs to speak to a need that I have. While I feel like there is a lot of change in my life now and coming in the future, I didn't feel as gripped (if I can use that word) to Girl Meets Change. Not for lack of wanting though.

I found Kirsten's writing to be strong and to the point--both things I love! And I think she did a good job of seeking out stories to add here and there along with her own personal anecdotes. I did enjoy that she used examples of Biblical characters, but I found that they were "typical" characters. Esther, Jacob, Abraham...Now there is nothing wrong with these examples, and for those who haven't grown up in the church or don't know the Bible well, these may have pointed out "light bulb" ideas, but I found that I wasn't challenged to see their stories in a new light.

To me, there wasn't a moment of awakening where I realized something new about myself - which is often why I read devotional books (aside from my own Bible reading, of course). Don't get me wrong, I did my fair share of highlighting and Kristen had some amazing gems that I took to heart. But I just didn't connect in a "wow, this book changed me" type of way (ironically). And that's okay. Not all books will.

I would still be confident in recommending this to women who know they have a difficult time with change or those who are facing an upcoming change that could be difficult, scary, exciting, or crazy-new. Kirsten's attention to scripture and her constant encouragement will mean a lot.

As someone who has a REALLY difficult time with change, I was gifted this book by my loving sister. A great Christian read that is both insightful and helpful. I marked up my copy with a pen and highlighter.

Whether chosen or unexpected, all change brings stress. I have long said that the only constants in this life are God and change. Change is inevitable. In my education programs we were taught to be ready to modify and adapt our lesson plans and our schedules to meet the needs of the students and the school. Change happens. There's a reason why my personal military wife life motto is "Semper Gumby: Always Flexible." It's a reminder to me to be ready to change, to be open to change.

With that being said, change is not always easy nor is it always fun. Enter Kristen Strong's debut book Girl Meets Change: Truths to Carry You through Life's Transitions. As a military wife for 20 years, she has learned a few things about change and how to navigate transitions.

I really wish this book had been around for me when my husband decided to go active duty. I might not have been as resistant to his wishes as I was (and am ashamed to admit now). But the good news is that it is available now, and it's not just for military wives. It's for ALL WOMEN DEALING WITH CHANGE. Last time I checked, that pretty much encompasses everyone.

I highly recommend this book. Preorder now from your favorite retailer, and visit the author at her site: Chasing Blue Skies.

Girl Meets Change, by Kristen Strong, is a sweetly written message of hope to anyone going through change. Since everyone at some point faces change, I would recommend this book to everyone. Kristen's written is clear and engaging, and she speaks beautiful truths throughout the book, preparing the reader to not only accept and endure change, but to embrace and thrive in change.

Life happens, and change happens. This is why you need this book. Kristen dives deeply into how we are hardwired to avoid change, but turns it around and shows how, through trust in God, we can break that hardwiring and learn to live a life thriving in change. We can learn to meet change and walk with it contentedly.

One of my favorite things about this book is that Kristen isn't coming from a "you should do this" perspective, but rather from a "me too" perspective. She shares her heart and her struggles with change, and the work the Lord did in her over many years. As I read, I felt like we were sitting on the front porch together, having a cup of coffee and chatting like old friends. You will not regret buying this book!

Have you ever just needed a friend who somehow understood you? Sometimes, those friends aren't a phone call away or even next door. Sometimes, you find that friend in the form of a writer. And that's exactly who Kristen Strong is: a friend to women walking through changes of all sorts, shapes and sizes! As a military wife, Kristen has had her fair share of unexpected change and yet, she's found a way to walk through it by leaning on her relationship with Jesus Christ. I appreciate her gentle prodding to walk onward and the practical tips she offers in every chapter to navigate uncertainty. There truly is joy in change, and not just when it's over!

Whether you relish change or try to avoid it at all costs, this book is for you! Although I tend to find change rather exciting, my book is now covered in yellow highlighter as I soaked in so many God-truths! From life altering events to minor inconveniences, this book covers it all while drawing you ever closer to the Lord! Although written for women, my husband wants to read it next after hearing all my, "WOW! Listen to this!" exclamations :) I highly, highly recommend Girl Meets Change & am already planning to give copies as Christmas gifts!

Change is inevitable in our lives and it's a part of our story. Kristen does a great job in helping us remember that change isn't the end and that we have a chance to grow in and through the changes. We have promises we can cling to written in Scripture and we can point others to Jesus as they watch us navigate our new normals. I love the way Kristen writes and makes us feel like we are having a personal conversation. This book is a must read for anyone going through any kind of change.

Change isn’t something I do particularly well with or enjoy. Deep down, I’m a hobbit at heart who likes routine, tradition, and the occasional adventure—no surprises or unexpected journeys.

While chronic illness makes every day unpredictable, through this book Kristen offered heartfelt perspective in realising that our limitations help us trust more fully in the Master Planner. Something I’m guilty of forgetting all too often.

Change is a part of life. But we don’t have to suffer through it. We can thrive. It’s all about perspective.

I was gifted this book earlier this spring just as I had solidified a surgery date for a subtotal colectomy following about a year of debilitating symptoms having to do with my digestive system and bowels. Yes, I was miserable. I'm a 20 year old college student and I could hardly keep down a granola bar at this point. I knew something needed to be done, but at the same time? Many days ended with me collapsing in bed and wrestling with and screaming at God. WHY was he doing this to me? How on earth was I supposed to graduate on time? Who the heck did God think I was to throw yet another health hurdle at me? In just about every way, I felt broken...but as surgery approached and came...a peace began to fill my heart, mind, and spirit. Though I spent a good week in the hospital and the recovery was by far the most painful period of my life to date, so much HEALING has occurred over the past 3 months. Whether it was the words of a special nurse or a phone call from a dear friend...whether I was falling asleep crying as I listened to my worship playlist or I was waking up and thanking Him for what was starting off as a minimal pain day...He met me. Every. Single. Moment. He met me. Even when I berated him and cursed at him and wished I wasn't alive. He stood steady and has remained there. This book is a blessed gift, and I hope I can pass it onto someone going through similar battles one day. But I'll have to get them a new copy-- because I journaled the crap out of mine. :) Thank you, Kristen, for following God's "pull" in your life...especially when it came to writing! This book has helped me to positively reflect on this most recent and horribly painful journey with gratitude, faith, and clarity. HE IS STILL (AND ALWAYS) GOOD!

Change has always been the only thing constant in our life. And that it is inevitable. Whether you're still young or was young once, you encounter change everyday. You go through it every hour, every minute, every second of your life. And the best thing to do with change is to embrace it whole-heartedly and let God guide you through it all.

That is what I learned from this book. Girl Meets Change is about Kristen Strong as she narrated the changes she'd been through & how she embraced it with her military husband. It started with their constant moving from one place to another, never settling at one location nor building a solid friendship through the years. But amidst it all, her unwavering faith in God solidified her and strengthen her belief in marriage.

This had been a very inspiring book full of values and life lessons. Lessons that we can apply in our daily lives. A book that helps us to be strong and find solitude in God. Thanks Kristen for this really amazing book!

Kristen writes in a mom way. I could relate. I felt her words were authentic, funny, and endearing. She challenged me to recognize that proverb of "putting yourself in another person's shoes." I have my shoes...but each of us has "changes" we are facing. In reading the book I could identify with some chapters, and recognize friends in other ones. I enjoyed the perspectives. The writing was fluid. The story was easy and quick to read. I enjoyed it, and I am mailing my copy to my sister this week to share the love! I hope you have a chance to read this book because it is a really good one. Change is everywhere. It is a part of our life in motion. Accepting change and arguing with God about are both okay.

Having read Kristen's blog for a while, I was so looking forward to this book. Previously she wrote a devotional for military wives (as I'm not a military wife, that counted me out), but this is for everyone. It's reassurance in the midst of change. It's Kristen using her own life and others' to teach us to lean into change, as you'd lean into the corners on a motorbike. You may not always enjoy the ride, but leaning the opposite direction would break you.

Thanks Kristen. Your writing in here is every bit as good as your blog. :-)

Whether you're struggling with a change in your life or looking forward to the next change, you'll want to read this book. As a military wife, it's easy to relate to Kristen's stories of constant, inevitable change. But she goes beyond the everyday events of the day to show how resting in the Lord and trusting in Him through change helps you thrive - not just survive. Let Kristen help you, encourage you, tell it like it is and share her experiences with an unchanging heavenly Father in a changing world.

I really liked the author's style of storytelling, it made this a very quick and easy read. I purchased this book a couple months ago when I was seeking guidance through a tough time. I found that much of the advice in this book resonated with the feelings unwanted change can bring. In the time between purchasing and actually reading this book, I have come to many of the conclusions that the author points to on my own. Nevertheless, if I ever feel my faith getting shaky, this book is great to read as a reminder to stay hopeful and get through it.

This book offers such HOPE for God to bring beauty out of the ashes of the changes we all experience in life. Kristen offers such encouragement to feel what we need to feel and to be real about what's going on and to take every bit of those emotions before our trustworthy Heavenly Father and our community of friends. Any woman will be healthier as a result of reading and applying the wisdom in this book. :)

This is a book I wish had been around five and a half years ago when I moved to Alabama from Ohio. I struggled with putting on a brave face for my family even though I was sad and lonely on the inside. Kristen shares real, authentic experiences about the variety of changes that we go through. Her insights and perspective on God ring true.

When the days (and nights) are hard, there is just (or almost) a darkness around you and the God´s will and/or God´s promises are invisible and uncomprehendable.
This book deals with change - an unwelcome one/ones. The one you struggle to see God behind it, and you struggle to see how you can go through it unharmed.
It is not an easy read (I need to think a lot through reading it - which means that there is no sugar-coating present, which is definitely a good thing!), but an useful one in its deepness and wisdom.
And warm and personal one, too. The female voice is welcomed one for this female, as I can relate to the unique struggles and emotions around it.

Recommended read.
