This was truly a fascinating read! It was incredibly unique and gripped me from the very beginning!

A body has been discovered in Santa Barbara, CA. Its head and hands are missing. Detective Kate Flynn is called to the scene to investigate. It turns out the body is connected to a centuries old Templar journal that may hold the key to solving the murder. The journal was written by Sir Brychan, a Templar Knight on a suicide mission in 1317, and contains secrets that multiple people are trying to get their hands on and will even kill to do so. With the help of Brother Thomas, a monk who is able to translate the journal, Kate goes from Santa Barbara to Scotland to seek the truth and solve the case.

Told in dual timelines and multiple POVs, this book was extremely intriguing! It was a riveting, fast-paced page turner. I loved the blending of ancient history and modern science. I also loved how the author intertwined Brother Thomas and Sir Brychan. I'm really hoping this becomes a series, Kate's a great character that I'd love to get to know better and see what other crimes she can solve. The "Nuggets of Truth" that the author includes at the end is a definite must-read. It was extremely enlightening information. This was definitely a thrilling book that I really enjoyed and would highly recommend!

Twist of Time is different than any book I’ve read and I loved it. Told in the present and back in Templar times a diary connects a modern day crime with the past. The author wrote the past timeline in a different font and began and ended with a cross symbol. This was one of my favorite parts of the book because I’ve not seen this done before. It is part police procedural and part old world Templar journey. My favorite timeline was the Templar time because it is so interesting to me. I enjoyed this wonderful book!

A stunning “Must Read”

A masterful back and forth blending of ancient history and modern science. Waldron immediately draws the reader in on the first page and continues his hold on the reader until the final page is turned. Fascinating depth of research.

What a fascinating story this was! If you're a fan of history like I am and enjoy alternating timeline points of view, then this might just be the perfect read for you. This book masterfully weaves together two gripping narratives—one set in the 1300s and the other in present-day Santa Barbara—creating a seamless blend of historical intrigue and modern-day thriller.

In the 1300s timeline, we follow Brychan, a dedicated Templar knight, on a perilous mission to transport a chest of invaluable treasures. Accompanied by his loyal partner, Brychan’s journey takes a dramatic turn when the chest is stolen, forcing them to pursue the thieves across treacherous landscapes. But what begins as a quest to recover stolen goods quickly spirals into a deeper, more dangerous conspiracy. Along the way, Brychan documents their harrowing experiences in his journal, leaving behind a cryptic record of their trials and the secrets they uncover.

Fast forward to present-day Santa Barbara, where Detective Kate Flynn is drawn into a baffling murder investigation. The victim, it turns out, was in possession of an ancient Templar journal—the very same one Brychan penned centuries ago. As Kate delves deeper, she discovers that this journal is no ordinary artifact; it’s believed to hold the key to the lost Templar treasures, a secret so valuable that it has sparked a deadly race among those desperate to claim it. With danger lurking at every turn, Kate must work alongside Brother Thomas, a monk with a knack for translating ancient texts, to decipher the journal’s secrets before it falls into the wrong hands.

What makes this book truly stand out is its fast-paced, dual-timeline structure. The alternating perspectives keep the story fresh and engaging, as the past and present gradually converge in a satisfying and unexpected way. The historical elements are richly detailed, offering a vivid glimpse into the enigmatic world of the Templars—their unwavering commitment, their sacrifices, and the mysteries that still surround them. Brychan’s character, in particular, is a standout. He embodies the ideals of the Templar order—devotion, discipline, and courage—but he’s also refreshingly human, grappling with doubts and distractions that make him relatable and compelling.

On the modern side, Detective Kate Flynn is a strong, intelligent protagonist whose determination and resourcefulness drive the investigation forward. Her dynamic with Brother Thomas adds depth to the story, as their partnership evolves from one of necessity to mutual respect and trust. The interplay between history and modernity is handled with skill, making the ancient journal feel like a living, breathing artifact that bridges the gap between eras.

For anyone fascinated by Templar history, this book is a treasure trove of lore and speculation. The author does an excellent job of honoring the mystique of the Templars while crafting a story that feels fresh and original. The blend of historical fiction, mystery, and thriller elements makes for a truly immersive reading experience.

In short, this is a book that will keep you hooked from the first page to the last. Whether you’re drawn to the rich historical backdrop, the pulse-pounding action, or the intricate puzzle at the heart of the story, there’s something here for everyone. If you’re looking for a thrilling adventure that spans centuries and keeps you guessing until the very end, this is one you won’t want to miss.

Detective Sgt. Kate Flynn’s world is turned upside down after diving into a gruesome murder. Working with Brother Thomas, a young monk specializing in Gaelic translation, the two must unwind the modern-day murder with a mystery of the past in Twist of Time by Gy Waldron.

Kate Flynn is no stranger to gruesome murders. Being a third-generation detective, she is skilled in unraveling mysteries. When she is called to investigate a murder where all the identifying marks of the victim have been removed, she is in her element. The only witness she can rely on is Brother Thomas, a historian who specializes in Gaelic text. He brings her into a unique world of history, technology, and mysticism. They both must work together to not only solve the murder but also solve a centuries-old mystery before the curse of death follows them, as it has followed so many with this mystery.

I am a big fan of history and adventure. Learning about something you may not necessarily seek out while also solving a mystery and being kept on the edge of your seat makes me happy. The idea of this book was right up my alley, and it started strong. I was interested in the murder that was introduced and curious about how everything would tie in together. But it quickly began to lose steam for me.

The pacing was odd, going very quickly, yet the characters often had very little urgency. Once they had solved the biggest mystery of the past, I was shocked to see how much of the book was still left to go. From then on, it lost me.

The plot was very convoluted, and the author couldn’t decide what he wanted to do. Was this a Da Vinci Code-style action, a psychic and technology Sci-Fi, or just a classic murder mystery? I don’t know because it was all too much.

My biggest complaint with this novel was how the characters were written–especially the women. Most women would know, without seeing the author’s name, that a man wrote the book. Women do not speak, think, or act like the author wrote them. There was also a lot of language that started to grate on me. I don’t mind swearing in novels, but when the majority of language used is derogatory to women, I have a problem.

Finally, this novel would have benefited from a single narrator, most likely Brother Thomas. The twist fell flat to me because you have been in the minds of so many characters, and nothing pointed to the twist they gave. How could you follow this character so closely but not know the twist they gave?

With a little more focus, Twist of Time could take on history while still scratching the itch of a classic murder mystery.

Intriguing dual-timeline thriller featuring the legends of the Knights Templar, a mysterious, ancient diary, and a modern-day murder.

Twist of Time by Gy Waldron is an intriguing story featuring the legends of the Knights Templar, a mysterious, ancient diary, and a gruesome modern-day murder. Its fast-paced action quickly captured my imagination, and its compelling storyline kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end.

The story cleverly unfolds from multiple points of view along two separate timelines. In the present, Detective Kate Flynn, a third-generation cop, investigates the horrendous murder of a woman whose headless, handless torso is discovered by hikers on one of the city’s more remote trails. Learning the victim was the courier hired by a multimillionaire med-tech genius to courier an ancient diary to a local monastery for translation, she initially enlists the assistance of Brother Thomas, the monk-translator, to help her solve her case. The story quickly shifts into high gear when they realize the significance of the missing diary and the danger it brings to all who get involved with it. The threat becomes all too apparent, with no fewer than three different organizations vying to grab the diary and the translator for themselves.

The historical timeline follows Templar Knight Brother Brychen Houston, tasked with safeguarding the orders’ secrets as the French king and Pope conspire to take the Templar’s wealth, property, and mystic knowledge held within a mysterious trunk bearing the label “Veritas.” As he and his companions flee their pursuers, lose the trunk and regain it, and fight their way through France, Brychen records their story along with information regarding the Templars’ secrets in a diary. The author incorporates the history of the Knights Templar, their beliefs, and daily routines into the larger story, which is fascinating to read. Brother Brychen is the epitome of the conflicted hero as he struggles to fulfill his mission and forgive himself for his methods and his past.

The plot has a couple of distinctive twists that had me gasping, including a paranormal element featuring psychics. The descriptive settings are vivid and far-flung, and readers are in for some good armchair traveling.

I recommend TWIST OF TIME to readers of historical mysteries, historical fiction, and thrillers, especially to those who enjoy stories of the Knights Templar.

Twist of Time

When this book came up and I read the blurb and about the author, Gy Waldron, I was 100% certain that I would need to read this. Boy, was I right! Twist of Time alternates between two timelines. You have a current police investigation where a woman’s body was found mutilated and a story set in 1314 following Sir Brychan and Sir Ursus, Templar Knights and their mission.

Now, let me say, it may take a minute to get into the flow of things (By a minute I mean 2 chapters at most.) There are a lot of characters to get to know, but the timelines are linear in both the investigation into the death of the unknown woman and disappearance of the diary and the Knights and how that diary belongs to them. Both stories are in a race against time and evil and it all boils down to money and power.

The history that is woven into this story is amazing. It is immersive and will transport you seamlessly onto the pages and into the adventure. There are the laugh out loud moments you get from the best detective novels as well as having a strong female protagonist in Kate, that you really just want to know more about! The author vividly depicts the brutality of the 12th-century Crusades and the violent persecution of the Templars in the 13th century, providing chilling details.

Twist of Time is one of those books that took me down all the rabbit holes as I learned more and about this part of history that I only ever saw in movies. The book is both captivating and thought-provoking, blending historical intrigue with a chilling vision of what might unfold if powerful technology were controlled by a wealthy, narcissistic individual.

I loved A Twist in Time by Gy Waldron so much! I love stories featuring the Templar Knights and this one does not disappoint! Gy Waldron expertly wove a murder mystery story around a Templar Knights story. There was a lot of action that kept me reading until the book was finished. I found the parts featuring the Templar Knights to be informative and interesting. It definitely added to the story.

I thought the characters were well developed and relatable. I also liked the ways that the characters interacted with each other. I am a huge fan of novels that have natural, believable banter. I am also a fan of strong female characters and Kate is perfect. She's smart, witty, and strong. She also makes questionable decisions, which added to the story. Mr. Waldron did a great job with character relationships and interactions. There was some spice in the novel, which was like a slow burn. The spicy interactions were not discussed in great detail.

The only thing that bothered me a little bit, was that the plot took a slightly confusing turn towards the end of the story. Like the main mystery ended….but the story continued. It didn't necessarily take away from the story, but it did tie up all of the loose ends. Unfortunately I did not find the last part of the book as engaging as the rest of it and I found myself skim reading a good bit.

Overall I enjoyed A Twist in Time by Gy Waldron and would recommend it to readers who enjoy mysteries with some history thrown into the plot. I removed a star due to the book losing my interest towards the end.

I had no idea what to expect with this read, but I really like the cover. Yes, I’m one of those who picks a book based on the cover and I like to discover new authors.
In short, this book involves the uncovering of a diary that has been around for at least 700 years. Brychan, a Knight Templar, was charged with keeping this diary safe and he was also tasked with keeping a treasure chest safe as well. This was centuries ago.
Fast forward to the current time when Detective Sgt. Kate Flynn was tasked with solving some crimes and, in doing so, she met Brother Thomas. Their search for answers and the solving of these crimes led them to Scotland. Enter some really bad folks who solely wanted the diary for other purposes, but more importantly they wanted the treasure chest.
There is also this character Fallon. I’m not exactly sure what he was trying to do in getting his hands on the diary and the treasure chest, but he was also up to no good of his own.
There is quite a correlation between Brychan and Sara (a Gypsy he encountered in his ventures) and Kate and Thomas. I found the Knights Templar history a bit much for my personal taste, BUT I was intrigued with the overlapping of the past to the present. It was also interesting to me, near the end of this tale, who Kate partnered with to catch the bad guy and the motivations of the one she partnered with. I was also intrigued with how Kate started out with one frame of mind and then ended up with another, on many different levels. Definitely quite interesting to read about the Knights Templar and how they served their own form of justice, swiftly, back in those days.

TWIST OF TIME
By Gy Waldron

In Santa Barbara Detective Kate Flynn is called to the scene of a murder. The body of a woman has been found on a hiking trail, naked without a head, hands, or feet. And a body with no head is not the most unusual aspect of the case. Kate finds herself working with an Anglican monk who is an expert in Celtic studies, a megalomaniac whose ancient journal has been stolen, and the story of two Templar Knights.

TWIST OF TIME is a tale combining two stories, a modern day thriller involving a stolen journal and the story of two Templar Knights, Sir Ursus and Sir Brychan, the author of the missing journal. I've always been interested in the Templar Knights and the historical story was fascinating, keeping me spellbound. The modern aspect was a fast paced thrill ride, with multiple people trying to find the journal and Brother Thomas translating it. Lines are blurred between good and bad-certainly the man who originally had the journal and wanted Brother Thomas to translate it was bad, but what about all of the other people trying to get it? The ending had some major twists and some surprises, two of which did not sit right with me.

One of the more unusual aspects of the book was the psychic aspect. That was a unique and very interesting addition to the plot. I really liked the three main historical characters and Brother Thomas. My opinion of another became tainted by the end. However the character I found most fascinating was Leo. I'd love to learn more about him-what a backstory he must have. While there were many things I liked, and I certainly did enjoy TWIST OF TIME, you can certainly tell it was written by a man. It is not a necessity to continually describe women's breasts. Especially as those descriptions weren't relevant to the character or plot. Also one of those surprises I mentioned. Sigh.

TWIST OF TIME is a fast paced thriller combining history with modern day science.

Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarain, I was gifted my copy of this book.

This is a step away from my usual fare, and my review might come across a little bit differently.

Kate and Brother Thomas are thrown together to translate a particular diary, written in the 1300s by one of the Knights Templar. There follows a chase across the globe, with some twists and turns along the way to keep you on your toes!

What I liked about this, was that there are MULTIPLE points of view. We get to hear from Kate and Thomas, but also the bad guys (plural) and what they are thinking and why they are doing what they are doing. You know I LOVE hearing from the bad guys!

We also get to hear from the author of the diary. I particularly enjoyed that, learning about the Templar Knights from the ground up.

It's multi layered. Written part in the now, and part in the 1300. It was almost like the different parts were circling each other, but getting closer all the time.

Because of the multi layered plot, it took me far longer than it would usually do to read 230 odds pages, but that's not a bad thing. I had to concentrate extra hard, but there was no doubling back to reread. I love when books make me slow down my reading.

It's not an easy read, and you really DO have to pay attention, but it was a very VERY good step out my comfort zone.

4 very good stars

I am loving Gy Waldron's first published book. Once I saw that the synopsis mentioned the Knights Templar, I was in! I truly enjoyed Waldron's writing style. He really pulled me into the story and left me wanting more. This book was a hard one to put down. He did a fabulous job of fleshing out his characters and making the reader empathize and fall in love with them. The book alternates between the year 2010 and 700 years prior following the Holy Wars. Brychan, a Templar, is charged with protecting a chest and its secret contents that he is to transmit across Europe with his life. While doing so, he keeps a journal about his adventure and all the colorful people he meets along the way. Little does he know that this same journal will cause much scheming and death 700 years later in Santa Barbara, CA for a modern-day monk and a police detective that will do anything she can to keep him safe and help him translate the diary and locate the Templar Chest. This amazing story spans 700 years, 2 continents and many countries. I found the story intriguing and thought provoking. I recommend this book to anyone who is a history buff and enjoys reading books by authors like Dan Brown. Thanks so much to Gy Waldron, Definitive Words Publishing, and Book Sirens for trusting me to give an honest review on this advanced reading copy. I truly loved this book and look forward to Waldron’s next published adventure.

I was fascinated by the layering of stories in ‘twist of Time’ by Gy Waldron. This book has historical mystery, modern mystery, romance and sci fi. Kate, a homicide detective, meets a monk while investigating a case involving a stolen Templar diary. The interweaving of the present day case investigation and the diary translation is masterful, and parallels between Thomas and Brychan. are evident. Both are monks, both have the gift of sight. They are both tasked with protecting a mysterious chest, and Brychan’s diary. In Brychan’s lifetime, the enemies were the Church and the King of England (he was Scottish) . Thomas’ enemies are two mysterious groups, one seems to want to protect him, both want the diary and chest. One is a mega rich researcher who seems to be trying to make a computer self aware and under his control. I would have liked the Fallon character to be developed more to understand his motivation and end game. There’s also something in Kates background that is not shared but might give clues to her drivers.

This was not a fast read for me; I had to ponder each chapter before I was ready to move on. Similarly, Thomas found more meaning in Brychan’s diary after reflection. I found the authors notes at the end to be interesting. I recommend his book to someone in the Templars.

This is an interesting mystery that relates current situations to historical events. The current narrative breaks for historical action, giving the background for the current suspense. The plot involves people who have special mental powers, such as seeing future events. It is supposed the Knights Templar had knowledge as to how to develop those powers, hence the desperate search for the historical documents.

I am always delighted to learn something new when I read fiction and here it was about the Knights Templar. Waldron has added a “Nuggets for the Curious” section where he identifies what parts of the novel were based on fact. There is also a good bit of venturing into the present and future work on establishing computer and human brain interface near the end. I do hope that part was more science fiction than fact.

I generally liked how the plot developed. I did think finally nailing the villain might have been a bit beyond belief. Nevertheless, this is a mystery that can be enjoyed by those who like historical influence as well as those anticipating cutting edge technology. I get the impression there may be more adventures for these characters and I will be watching for it.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book through Partners in Crime Book Tours. My comments are an independent and honest review.

I am an reader and this is my honest opinion. This is a great read! I loved it. It is very unusual, a dual timeline for around 80% of the book, involving a diary written by a 14th century Templar knight, and a modern day Anglican monk, the only person able to translate it. There are three groups chasing the diary and the monk, two homicides and a detective determined to get at the truth, plus a little bit of romance that, I confess I enjoyed. I happen to enjoy dual timelines where the past touches the present, as this one does. The author portrays the violence of the 12th century crusades and the 13th century persecution of the Templars in gruesome detail. The diary comes to an end with the battle of Bannockburn in Scotland. But the modern day story takes an unexpected twist and becomes very different and futuristic. The book is fascinating, intriguing, historical and at the same time makes it frighteningly easy to imagine what could happen to the future of technology in the hands of a rich egomaniac.
I learned a few things from this book, and the authors detailed explanations of his research are as interesting as the rest of the book. I couldn't put it down.

I went through a period a few years ago where I binge-read everything bit of fiction I could find on the Templars. Some of it was really, really good and some not so great. Twist of Time is a really, really, really great addition to the subject.

I was captivated from the first page, even though the very first sentence was a bit startling! We begin with a present day murder that is immediately connected to the chaotic days in France when the Templars were hunted and executed by the French king. At the center of the chaos is a diary that holds many Templar secrets, including, possibly, the key to finding the fabled Templar treasure.

The author immediately begins building a web of complicated relationships between and among the characters - a tough homicide detective, a mysterious modern-day monk, and a number of other shady characters. I was particularly taken with the author’s cleverness in keeping me guessing about who was shady/bad and who was shady/good.

I also enjoyed the way the author wove together the mysterious Templar past with modern day science. I hope to read more stories like this from this author.

I will recommend this for fans of historical mysteries.

Twist of Time is a time-jump story with two timelines. The first story takes place in modern Santa Barbara. It follows Detective Kate Flynn and Brother Thomas. He is a monk who studies old writings. A strange death links the two timelines together. They start a journey to find a Templar journal. They also want to solve a brutal murder. The second story is set in 1314. It tells of Brychan, a Templar Knight. He must hide a secret Templar treasure. This part of the story is very interesting and I always wanted to read more.

The story moves smoothly between the present and the past. History mixes with today's tough reality. Both stories have lots of mystery, excitement, and disturbing events. This book is for adults because both stories contain violent acts. The title fits the book well because the story has many twists and turns. It's great to see the two timelines come together for a thrilling end. If you enjoy exciting stories mixed with history, you should read Twist of Time.

A great fast paced thriller. I really enjoyed this book, and I would rate this book a 4 1/2 stars!

Twist of Time has two story/timelines that are interwoven. The first story/timeline is sent in the present day and is about a female police detective and an Anglican monk. They are brought together by a mysterious death and set off on adventure to find a missing Templar treasure and solve a murder. The second story is set in 1314 and it is the story of the Templar Knight who is tasked with hiding the secret Templar treasure. There are lots of twists and turns in both storylines, and the ending was not at all what I expected. If you like Dan Brown style books you are going to enjoy this story. This is one of the best ARC books I have read this year, and I highly recommend it.

Early in the story you meet a police detective trying to solve a homicide. Kate discovers that the victim was the courier of an ancient diary being brought to a monk for him to translate it. From there, the story follows him being abducted so another group can get him to translate it.

Then it comes out that this diary was written a a Knight Templar. The rest of the story flips back and forth between what was going on in the Knight's diary and the detective and the monk try to solve the mystery (what was so important about the diary).

It was an excellent read with lots of history, various bad guys, and our trusty sleuths.

I will look for this author again.

...some of the twists work better than others

I DID really enjoy reading this although I found some of the time twists a little clumsy. I enjoyed the templar side of the story, however the modern day detective story felt a little contrived to me. Towards the end, there were some humorous parts which again felt a little awkward in contrast to what had gone before.

Like I said, I did enjoy it, but it involved quite a lot of "suspension of belief". It felt a little as if the author was trying too hard to be clever and funny and the story would have worked without that "extra effort", although this is probably setting up for the later books in the series?

"Twist of Time" is thrilling and has two gripping and realistic timelines. The main characters, Brychan, a Templar Knight, and Kate Flynn, a Santa Barbara Detective, are strong characters in their timelines. The author smoothly connected the story lines with a historical backdrop, creating an exciting narrative. Additionally, different fonts distinguish between the two timelines, complementing the reading experience.
The characters worked well in each timeline, and many twists kept me engaged, so I finished the book rather quickly. The author did a great job researching the history surrounding the Templars, which added to the mystery.

What a wonderful book! I have long held a fascination for tales of the Templar era, and "Twist of Time" did not disappoint. Very well researched and a dual timeline format which keeps you interested right to the end, I can highly recommend this fabulous book. Of the 50-ish books I read in 2024, this was definitely one of the best. Thank you to the author for many late nights engrossed in the pages of this book! Twist of Time follows two strands, one in current times and one during the time of knights, and templars. This book is rich in detail. The author delivers a fascinating picture of the days of jousting, slayings, Templars, and a quest to find a hidden chest. This is paired with a detective of today trying to solve a murder that involves a monks search for the missing chest and diary. I really liked the ending. A final modern quest for the detective.

Such a good read! It kept me hooked from beginning to end. At first I thought I was going to get lost with the back and forth of present and past, but it was easy to follow. I loved the history within this book. Would definitely recommend!

Written by the creator of the Dukes of Hazzard, Twist of Time is an incredible literally twisty read. One thing I can say, you will continually be wondering where the story is going. You may guess, but you’ll probably be wrong. Enjoy the ride!
