Little Grey Cells: The Quotable Poirot

Rate this book
Discover the man behind the moustache in this book of one-liners by the world’s most famous Belgian detective, revealing the wit and wisdom of Hercule Poirot and his creator, Agatha Christie.

‘My name is Hercule Poirot and I am probably the greatest detective in the world.’

The dapper, moustache-twirling little Belgian with the egg-shaped head, curious mannerisms and inordinate respect for his own ‘little grey cells’ solved some of the twentieth century’s most puzzling crimes. But what do we really know about the eccentric genius underneath that fussy façade

Sometimes funny, often profound, and always revealing, this book of quotes and comments, from more than 50 Poirot novels and short stories, gives an entertaining glimpse of the man behind the moustache, and the wit and wisdom of the Queen of Crime who created him.

Includes an exclusive essay by Agatha Christie from the archives on her love/hate relationship with her most famous creation.

This little book collects together plenty of good quotes from Agatha Christie's famous Belgian detective. There are also a couple of essays from 1938 in which Christie explains how she feels about her most famous creation. Despite her love/hate relationship with Poirot it's nice to see her admit that she is "beholden to him financially."

‘I like an audience, I must confess. I am vain, you see. I am puffed up with conceit. I like to say, “See how clever is Hercule Poirot!”

As I mentioned when I reviewed Murder, She Said (the quote book devoted to the sayings and wisdom of Miss Jane Marple), I have a weakness for quotations. I'm always on the look-out for a nifty turn of the phrase, a profound thought, or even a humorous jest to add to the collection of quotes that I've amassed over the years. And, loving mysteries the way I do, I particularly enjoy finding good quotes in my detective fiction. So, when the books of quotations featuring Agatha Christie's two most famous sleuths came out, I naturally had to add the volumes to my small library of quote books.

It is a small book, but I spent a very pleasant hour reading Poirot's thoughts on everything from himself (oh, what modesty!) to Hastings, from Human Nature to Truth and Lies, and from Romance to Detective Work. It was nice to see quotations from the short stories as well as novels and the book gives us a well-rounded sample of snippets from the great detective.

Little Grey Cells
*Quotable Poirot* by Agatha Christie

Ah! The intriguing series of Quotes of Life, Crime, Love, Food and Wine and the general necessities of life are indeed an eye opener in this stylish miniature edition of collected and memorable dialogues uttered by none other than the revered Detective hercule Poirot, the finest creation of Agatha Christie. The foreword and the post script fits very well and informs the readers about Christie's personal thoughts about her creation. The collected quotes are simply fantastic, relatable and practically true. Pleasure reading this, inspired to read more of Christie's crime thrillers.

While I am a fan of Agatha Christie, I am not a fan of Hercule Poirot. I find him arrogant and cruel. I can only take him in small doses, and this book of quotations delivers his pomposity in palatable amounts. A delightful little books for fans of the detective and of Dame Agatha.

Hercule Poirot on minulle hävettävän uusi tuttavuus.

Mutta mitä parhain sellainen. Siispä ahmin Pienet harmaat aivosolut tunneissa kesäisessä ilta-auringossa. Hurmaava herrasmies (jonka herrasmieheydestä voidaan olla montaa mieltä).

Great little book. Very much enjoyed his little quotes. They really showed his character and I liked the way it was divided into different headings. I liked Agatha s introduction of how she created him and how sometimes she was fed up with his conceit and pompous nature.

"If you would only use the brains the good God has given you. Sometimes I really am tempted to believe that by inadvertence He passed you by."

"There is a golden rule in life - never do anything yourself that others can do for you."

"Les femmes... they are marvellous! Women observe subconsciously a thousand little details, without knowing that they are doing so. Their subconscious mind adds these little things together - and they call the result intuition."

"Life is like that! It does not permit you to arrange and order it as you will. It will not permit to escape emotion, to live by the intellect and by reason. You cannot say, "I will feel so much and no more." Life, whatever else it is, is not reasonable."

"No, my friend, I am not drunk. It is that I have been to the dentist, and need not return for another six months. It is a beautiful thought." IF THIS AIN'T ME

Full of lovely little one-line snippets from some of the Hercule Poirot novels and short stories, this will remind you of why you've enjoyed reading them. I truly wish some one had given it to me in my Christmas stocking!

The Introduction, written by Agatha Christie in 1938, gives us a brief overview how Hercule Poirot came to be and how "there was much more in the little man than I had ever suspected." Her humour comes through when, later, she says, "I am beholden to him financially."

At the back, in References, there is a handy list of the books and short stories in which he actually appeared - there has been a tendency by film and television to locate him in other stories.

I loved it.

<3 No fantastyczna ta okładka jest!

For serious Agatha Christie fans only! A short book of quotes from the world famous fictional Belgium Detective Hercule Poirot. The quotes span the entire breadth of the Poirto canon and Dame Agatha would have been quite proud to see them all gathered in this beautiful collection.

A beautifully published little hardback of Poirot quotes! I enjoyed reading Christie’s thoughts on her detective in the ‘Living With Poirot’ section at the beginning.

A nice little book for all who love Poirot. In this case: judge this book by its cover. Its just a small book of Poirot quotes. Although the list of all books (including short stories) and in interview with Agatha Christie are a nice little extra.
