Janette Oke is a Canadian author known for her inspirational fiction, often set in a pioneer era and focused on female protagonists. Her debut novel, Love Comes Softly (1979), became the foundation for a successful series, followed by over 75 other novels. The first book in her Canadian West series, When Calls the Heart (1983), inspired the popular television series of the same name.
Born in Champion, Alberta, to farmers Fred and Amy (née Ruggles) Steeves during the Great Depression, Oke went on to graduate from Mountain View Bible College in Didsbury, Alberta, where she met her future husband, Edward Oke, who later became the president of the college. The couple has four children, including a daughter who has collaborated with Janette on several books.
A committed Evangelical Christian, Oke has authored numerous works exploring themes of faith. She has received various accolades for her contributions to Christian fiction, including the 1992 President's Award from the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association and the 1999 CBA Life Impact Award.

I really enjoyed this book and the series (so far) as a whole.

It reminded me of an adult version of the 'Little House on the Prairie' book series. There were many hardships that the characters struggled with (death, poverty, life without modern medicine, etc) but it was a very different way of life in comparison to now. I don't feel as if I can say 'simpler' because it definitely wasn't easy and they worked hard, but I feel like that era truly appreciated life.

Anyway, these stories in this compilation really allowed you to get to know the characters and the family through the progression of their life. I found the initial book laid the foundation and was slower paced but after that, I felt like these characters' lives were just flashing by (a good representation of real life). Although there were many hardships as mentioned above, these books were truly good to read and the characters were a perfect testament to strength, resilience, and trusting God.

Definitely a good read and I look forward to continuing to read the rest of the series.

I believe this is one of the most faith-based stories I have ever read. Finding God's blessings in difficult circumstances is trying, but the Davis family can show us how to see God working even when we wish to despair.

I read this quite a while back and saw the movie. Both were quite good. I voluntarily choose to give a review and I'd give both the book and the movie 5* ratings. A heart touching good read.

I love Janette Oke books. They take me into a time when living life was much simpler. It wasn't an easy living but people where happier and nicer to each other. If you like the old west these are the books for you. There movies that have been made of these books and are a beautiful series for the entire family without having to worry about bad language or spicy scenes. Wonderful reading!!

These books are great and I seem to love all the books written by this particular author. The Lord uses her writings to teach/convict me on different things. It's been neat and it is wonderful to be whisked away to a simpler time on many occasions.

I really enjoyed this whole series. Although it was a bit predictable at times, I liked being taken back to a simpler time, a simpler life--where survival took a lot more work than it does today!

Fun, easy books that grab you from the start. And the best part is you know exactly which book you're going to read next because it's a 8 book series and you have to see what happens!

This is a very clean, though at times slow-moving, series of books. I enjoyed following the Christian family through their various struggles. It made me view my own faith differently.

This whole series is great. I love Janette Oke, she is a great Christian novelist. I like all her books I've ever read. And I loved the first two movies. The rest of the movies were okay.

The only thing I don't like about these books is the painful dialect.

I like the way she expresses the hardships and joys of pioneer women. The movies add a lot that isn't really there.

I saw the first Hallmark movie and began the series. The first two stories are quite nice, though the writing isn't amazing.

AWESOME! I'm on Book 7 of the 8 book series, as of today June 18. It is so romantic and Christian; it's hard nowadays to find a romance that is clean.
