I love a good old western and this has a serial killer plot to it so I was all set to love this graphic and it did not disappoint. A true Old West tale where the line between the good and bad guys is blurred. Fantastic art with some pretty gruesome scenes. A storyline that keeps you guessing, pulls several twists, and an ending that surprised me. I didn't like the ending that much, though, truth be told.

From the time I was young, I always enjoyed a good western story. Abbadon was easy to jump into, combining the classic gun fight with an air of mystery around the character "Bloody Bill."

Being part of the group that funded the Kickstarter campaign to put this book out was an added bonus, making it great to know that this story was, literally and actually, written for fans like me.

Revelation 9:11-12

They had as a king over the angels of the Abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon (destruction) and in Greek Apollyon (destroyer).

The first woe is past; two other woes are yet to come.

In the western town of Abbadon pretty much anything goes for the right price: gambling, prostitution; whatever your vice, you’ll likely find it in Abbadon. However, there has been a string of gruesome murders in town that is scaring off the customers and the legendary lawman, Wes Garrett, has been hired to aid the sheriff in uncovering the killer. Garrett’s methods seem a bit extreme even for Abbadon but, as the body count rises and the sheriff expresses his concerns, the mayor continues to back Garrett. In a town renowned for moral ambiguity, it ‘s hard to tell the good guys from the bad. And as bad as things are, they’re about to get a whole lot worse because the mayor has plans for Abbadon and they don’t include the present citizens.

The graphic novel, Abbadon, was written by Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Grey and based on an original screenplay by Spencer Marstiller. The artwork is by Fabrizio Fiorentino. The book includes plenty of extras including the original storyboards and an explanation of the process that took it from screenplay to graphic novel.

Abbadon is a beautifully drawn and written tale full of action and suspense and a nod to noir. Like an old-time western, it posits the questions: do good guys always win in the end and does good always triumph over evil. But this isn’t your grandaddy’s western so don’t look for easy answers here. Definitely a high recommendation for fans of Palmiotti’s Jonah Hex and other western series or for fans of graphic novels in general.

The artwork is really great. Story line is a bit difficult to follow. Regarding the content, it's seedy, profane, & exceptionally violent. Language found in it is the heavy use of the word F*ck & the frequent misappropriation of Jesus' name. Additionally, there is nudity, drinking, smoking, gambling, knife/gun violence, & gore.

On a more favorable note: I like that "Bloody Bill Anderson" a real-life confederate from Quantrill's Raiders (same as Civil War outfit Jesse & Frank James + Young Brothers) is in this story. Concerning any explicit content, the writers go to lengths to illustrate the Hellhole atmosphere that the town of Abbadon is. Their prime officials keep talking about how great it is & the book seems to be designed to show that it's not - so it's not without cause.

Upon arriving at the end, the story comes together and makes sense. I personally liked the ending & once arriving there appreciated the book even more.

Arrgh. Good AND frustrating.

Ridiculous story of a serial killer in the Old west. This kind of 2 cents plot has been seen a zillion times already; boots and a fancy cowboy hat won’t make it original. I had identified the killer in 10 pages tops fer chrissakes!

Dumb and incoherent it merely plays with so-called shock value and nothing else. The lousy final showdown and its verbal diarrhea iced the cake.

Art is serviceable. Barely.

Generally, not a fan of Westerns nor grisly mysteries.
This just strengthened that case. Find serial killer stories with the weirdness far too gruesome. Its excess.
Dialogue wasnt goo.
Art is decent, but the subject not so much either.
Forgettable as well.

Loved the story telling, the ark, inking and letters were phenomenal. The ending bummed me out a little, just because it's not what I wanted- doesn't mean it isn't a fantastic story!

Western Noir

Sure, on one level this is just a western tale about a tough Marshal called in to tame a lawless town and to subdue a killer who has a taste for gruesome excess. We have a befuddled local Sheriff, crooked mayor, kid with gumption, hooker with a heart, and so on. There's no cross-over supernatural or magic angle.

But, this is much more than just a violent oater. It has a clear noir sensibility. Who's the bad guy, exactly? Who, (if anyone), is being framed? Who's in league with whom, and where are all of the switcheroos going to take us? Is everyone crooked and corrupt, and who precisely do you decide to shoot when nothing is as it seems? And why do we keep killing the prime suspects?

Some of the dialogue is pretty sharp, but there is a fair amount of monologuing, which at least helps keep the story straight. There are some cool twists, but a few too many coincidences. Characters don't so much develop as they do just change their stripes. I'm fine with all of that because I'd rather have a story bounce around than just plod a predictable path. If you're a noir/western purist this might be a bit over the top for you.

In a way, something similar can be said about the drawing. Characters are crisp and clearly identified, (I hate it when everybody looks like everybody else), but some panels can be too frantic or artsy. The panel layout is occasionally too cute and that can make it hard to follow the sequence. But these are minor quibbles; these aren't "Peanuts" comic strips and the artist is trying to bring energy and suspense to the story. A little excess in the service of that goal should be overlooked, especially when some of work is downright elegant.

So, the upshot for me was that this was an interesting and accomplished effort that held my attention and was generally entertaining. It had some clever and unexpected angles, and tried to push the envelope a little. That all worked for me.

Please note that I received a free advance will-self-destruct-in-x-days Adobe ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

I had a real great time with this western.

Violent, bloody with a true noire atmopshere into the scenes, you are wondering who are the good and the bad guys as you suspect everybody while turning the pages.

And if the story is cool, the art is awesome. I like the realistic and detailed aspect of the characters and the town but i also like the colors. It can be dark, full of light and fire and all the pages are different.
Very cool comics! Really had fun with it.

And I've appreciated that at the end you have some extra informations about the process of drawing the personnages, the scenes and how it was created.
That's was very interesting.

Absolutely terrible. The writing is very immature, with a lot of gratuitous violence, foul language, nudity and mean-spiritedness. It reads like the authors wanted to regurgitate what they saw in Deadwood, but completely missed the point. I expected a lot better from Palmiotti and Grey.

Wonderful artwork. Decent story. The plot made a few weird turns, but it was a good read overall.
