Highly respected for its substantive coverage and analysis of all foundational areas -- social, philosophical, historical, political, economic, curricular, and legal -- FOUNDATIONS OF EDUCATION, Thirteenth Edition, describes and analyzes the key educational issues and policies affecting American education. The authors relate the book's wide-ranging topics to an array of applied features to help prepare students for their future careers as educators. The chapters on the history and philosophy of education encourage students to construct their own personal philosophy of education, building a strong foundation for a professional career. Completely up-to-date throughout, this edition also provides the latest information on the common core curriculum, accountability, technology in education, school reform, diversity, legal rulings, recent trends in school funding and teacher compensation, new instructional practices, teaching licensure, the outlook for careers, and many other important topics.
I would give this book 2.5 stars out of 5 as it's the core text for our EDUC 200: Foundations of Education class. The class is written to focus on the philosophies of education; however, philosophies are only mentioned on four pages: page 168 (Chart "Philosophies of Education"), page 183 (Table "Theories of Education"), pages 383-387 (Historical Perspectives of Education), and page 407 (Table "Curriculum Organization Approaches" with corresponding philosophies/theories).
If the class is suppose to focus on philosophy, then this isn't the textbook to use.
However, the strengths of this book are that it is (1) easy-to-read (2) well-organized (3) provides a great overview of all aspects of education: from history to local governance to "who is who" in a school community.
Foundations of Education, a book about pedagogical knowledge and art of education, i think that's this book more learn about education in America, but its good to comparation Education in Indonesia for learning.
I've read this book for my educational philosophy for teachers class, I actually thought this book was interesting and helped a lot when it came to the course that I have taken. I know that it teaches, and help you learn about philosophy in the classroom.
Read the 13th edition for my college class of the same name. The 13th edition is a pretty self aware textbook and I thought it was pretty good for a textbook.
I found Foundations to be extremely useful, informative and well-written. It can be used as an encyclopedia or a full, sequential read. Further editions no doubt expound on the already-excellent work of Ornstein and Levine. For education in history, I've found no better basic text.
The book is straightforward and informational, but it goes in depth: a thoughtful and thorough march through the history of western education. No more, no less.
This is a good basic book about education that includes a historical review of the development of education worldwide but mostly covers everything you might need or want to know about our system of education, teacher prep, and the issues teachers deal with on a daily basic. If you want to get under the skin of education in America, this is a very good place to start.
I read a later version of this book cover to cover for a class and found it to be very helpful in getting a strong base for the politics of education in the US.
