I can’t decide if I hate this book or if I loathe it. My professor required this for an ‘Art Appreciation’ class and I really want to set it on fire. This did not inspire appreciation for art and the extreme detail made it feel more like ‘Art Architecture through the Ages.’ I inherently understand that architecture plays a role in art history but terminology and details that didn’t really pertain to art were so overused that I couldn’t understand half this text. I felt that I should have taken an architecture course prior to reading this to fully appreciate its value. Compared to the wonderful work of EH Gombrich in his ‘History of Art’ book, Garners textbook was a huge fail for me.
