…And action. Episode 2 of Rising Storm, White Lightning, this time written by the talented Lexi Blake dredges up more of the undercoating of slime in the affluent community filled with dirty little secrets and well-veiled lies. Once again, we move from sequence to sequence just as the drama builds, the tension mounts and we feel like we are going over a summit of revelations, instead of a commercial, we enter another viper’s nest of drama. This time, front and center is Senator Rush, who only gets to feel like a man when preying on a weak personality, one in pain and in need of what they mistake for love. Young and wild Dakota is ripe for his advances. What will happen when HIS manipulating mother finds out? What will happen when the sheriff sees them together?

Jacob is mourned, his mother is diving deeper into a convoluted world of keeping her son alive through Ginny’s baby, while Ginny still holds her secrets close to the vest. Meanwhile, life goes on, tongues wag and everybody has their own version of who’s doing who and who wants to do someone else.

Lexi Blake took the hand-off from Julie Kenner and ran like a pro, using her own style for this leg of the race. I would say she’s run a fast pace, bringing in another winner! It takes a special talent to pick up where some else left off and not lose the flow of a story and she did a marvelous job! We all like a little drama, especially when we can sit in judgment because we are not the object of the tisking and raised eyebrows.

3.5 - ”Saved by the bell.” Stars!

The second book in the Rising Storm series picks up very much from where it’s predecessor left off. The word about town is still very much on the return of Ginny, and the repercussions of the events that occurred in relation to it. But the focus moves over to the Rush and Alvarez families in White Lightening, and it would seem that they may have more connecting them than we are initially led to believe.

To be honest at this point, the series is very much still in the ’setting the scene’ developmental, part of the story, but I am intrigued and interested still in seeing where it will all eventually go at the moment. It is becoming more apparent though that the web of secrets and lies that most of the people in the town of Storm, Texas are holding close to their chests, are going to cause an awful lot of fireworks when they all start becoming common knowledge.

”I’m here all summer… How would you like to spend some time with me?”

Looking forward to seeing how the whole story continues to develop in part three; Crosswinds due for release this time next week.

Honestly, the writing so far has been grade A. I am loving these books. They are intriguing and entertaining.
This one picks right up where we left in book 1 with a deeper introduction to Senator Sebastian Rush.
 photo jack abbott young restless_zpsyfxs9sl9.jpg
In book 1, we learned that Senator Rush had an affair with his daughter's best friend and roommate Ginny. Senator Rush is married to Payton, big sister to Celeste Salt, Jacob's mother.
The reader is treated to the inner musing of the senator as the town mourns the loss of Jacob Salt. Let's just say that he is NOT what he seems.

ARC REVIEW

Episode Two, White Lightning is brought to us by Lexi Blake. Lexi Blake is the writer of the Masters and Mercenaries and the Thieves series. I have only read one of her previous books I enjoyed it. Funny enough my problem with the book I read before and this book are pretty much in the same, I hated the main female character. This episode is centered around the conceited self absorbed Dakota Alvarez and the fall out after the disappearance of Hector Alvarez. We do see some of the other characters, it is just like a soap the layout of the character story lines intersect and play out; a little bit here of one person a little bit there of someone else. There is something that was kinda hinted at that I would love to see; a little bit F/F and who it is between is what I'm giddy about. Again like a soap a lot goes on but nothing really happens; okay I take that back something big does happen but, just like a soap, it cuts off right before it happens so you really don't see it.

Narcissistic Dakota Alvarez has to blame someone for her fathers disappearance and she lays the blame firmly at the feet of her mother. Joanne is scared she doesn't know what to do now, everything is in Hector's name and she doesn't make enough at the florist shop to pay the mortgage and bills. She's lost and knows she can't go to her father for help. Sheriff Dillon knows he has to hold off it would not be appropriate to make a move on Joanne now so soon, but he does know her worries and arranges a new job for her, working as an assistant to the towns matriarch. I think it is a requirement for all soap opera story lines to have a patriarch/matriarch that rules the roost; Marylee Rush is Storm's. The mother of Senator Sebastian Rush and she is very much the politician she is a controlling overbearing woman who knows exactly what is going on and as long as it doesn't affect the family image or her son's political career she doesn't care. She puts on a good face being nice to everyone because everyone she is nice too is a vote for her son. Sebastian Rush is looking for his latest piece of ass and he has his eyes set on someone young and gullible, he should have learned the first time getting involved with Ginny not to shit where you sleep but this young nubile girl he can't resist.

Overall the only reason I disliked this one was because of my extreme dislike to both Dakota and Senator Rush who are predominate in this book. I look forward to seeing how things are going to play out with the characters that I like. So two episodes down six more to go I have my fingers crossed that it gets better, but just like a T.V. show I'll get through the first season and then make a decision on whether to continue on or not.

Ahhhhh... Episode 2 of the Rising Storm was deliciously sinful!!!! White Lightning picks off where it last left off in Episode 1. And right off the opening pages, I was hooked and how could I not when we got adultery, baby daddy drama, a missing person, and possible love affair brewing. The people of Storm are about to get hit with a big storm as chaos, lies, scandal, fourberie, and adultery are gonna set this town in a whirlwind of drama. And the biggest scandal to rock the town of Storm is its beloved Senator Rush and his love of young women. I'm not gonna lie, I seriously can't wait for episode three because I am dying to know what awaits the Senator and his relationship with Dakota. So if you like secrets, scandals, sex, and lots of town gossip then I highly recommend you to read this book.

It's a fun soap opera kind of series with a bunch of characters in a small town, all with their own secrets, betrayals, and problems. It's ok to listen to for a bit but it feels like nothing ever gets resolved and it can be frustrating. Probably not going to continue with the series unless I get a craving for soap opera drama down the road.

Just like a real show episode two was better the the first one. We got more of the story this time focusing on Dakota Alvarez. Dakota tries so hard to be the good girl everyone thinks she should be but why should she be good when being bad is so much more fun. Determined to get out of the small town she lives in she does something that she thinks will get her out. Where I am enjoying all of the episodes so far not wrapping up the stories at the end of each books is hard for me. I really hope that by the end of the season we get some sort of a conclusion.

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie Tales

Quick & Dirty: White Lightning delves even more into the dramatic and complicated lives of the people of Storm, Texas. This installment focuses on the ever widening chasm of relationships and affairs.

Opening Sentence: Senator Sebastian Rush sighed as he shrugged out of his Charvet dress shirt and hung it neatly on the valet rack where Carmen, the very efficient maid, would pick it up and ready it for cleaning.

The Review:

The soap opera drama continues with White Lightning. It is the second novel in the ongoing soap opera series of Rising Storm. I would recommend that you read Tempest Rising first before getting into this one. I will say I wasn’t as overwhelmed with the characters like I was in the first installment. I am not a huge fan of cheating and cheaters ever but I know that is a huge plot point in soap operas because of the drama and it was a huge point in White Lightning.

Dakota Alvarez’s head is spinning. She is still reeling about the death of Jacob Salt. The love that was going to get her out of the godforsaken town of Storm. Then with the disappearance of her father, she just goes to self-destructive tendencies, one of which includes the sex-crazed Senator.

I didn’t like Dakota in this version. She’s completely stupid and buying into what Sebastian tells her. She also denies, denies, denies how terrible her father is. I’m sure she had to be hard to write for the author, for any author. I couldn’t believe the comments she was making about her mother.

The rest of the story moved along for the rest of the residents of Storm. They are trying to get over the loss of Jacob and move on with a festival. A festival that is supposed to help with the great Senator’s re-election campaign. Although, I will say I’m really looking forward to when Joanne gets over her husband’s disappearance and falls for Dillion.

The writing in White Lightning was excellent. This episode went really fast. I really love the tie in with the name of this episode.

Overall, I say if you like soap operas and the drama they entail then definitely give this series a try. I’m really looking forward to when the real romance hits the page. I am wondering if there will be any real HEA’s in this series.

Notable Scene:

He immediately pulled away. “Sorry. You’re so sexy I’m afraid my hand had a mind of its own. I’ll get that food.”

She reached down and grabbed his hand, bringing it back to her chest. She didn’t want to let go of how he made her feel. It was there in the back of her head that this was wrong, but she didn’t care. She just wanted another couple of moments where she felt good about herself.

He was smiling as his lips descended on hers again and he took her mouth. His hand moved over her, her nipples sparking to life under the material of her blouse. His tongue traced the edge of her lips and when she opened for him, he delved inside. She gave over to him, tasting the liquor on his tongue. That liquor and this man had washed away some of the humiliation of the day.

After a long moment, he lifted his head and stared down at her. “We could have fun this summer, you and I.”

Slick's review posted at Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

This may only be the second episode in the Rising Storm saga but holy sh*t things are getting hotter, messier and there are even more secrets and interesting associations being made. I was completely drawn back into this series and despite this episode being written by a totally different author; it didn’t skip a beat. Yes, this one focused on some different characters but the ongoing drama is still there, the lies just keep growing and I found it just as intriguing as the Tempest Rising if not more so.

In this book we see that Senator Sebastian Rush is even more of a slimeball that we thought in the first episode. We see that his wife, Payton, while happy to play her part is not quite as happy as everyone seems to think and she’s beginning to want something more out of life and we see that his mother, Marylee, really is quite the puppet master.

The Alvarez family is working at coming to terms with the disappearance of husband, father and wife beater, Hector, and while his princess daughter, Dakota, is beyond upset his younger daughter, Mallory, tells her mother it was probably for the best and lets Joanne know she was well aware what was going on in their household despite her mother’s insistence that she was just clumsy. Meanwhile Sherriff Dillon Murphy is working overtime to make sure Joanne and her children are okay.

The stage is set and there is no doubt life in Storm is only going to get way more interesting as this series goes on. Who will come out on top, whose secrets will be revealed, will careers be ruined, and will families be torn apart? Only time will tell and I’ll be honest I can’t wait to see what happens next and I’m anxiously awaiting Episode 3 of Rising Storm; this series is addicting, twisted, exciting and flat out impossible to forget!

Enter the spoil brat! Every tv soap has one (or two) and RISING STORM has Dakota Alvarez! As the blurb says, she’s Daddy’s little girl, however, hasn’t amounted to much otherwise. There was a glimmer of hope there for a second when there is an incident and she turns a certain someone down but nope. Decisions are made and she’s a spoil brat! Lol

While this episode picked up right where the previous one ended, this one seemed to focused on the “bad guys”. This also leads me to share that I was curious to see how the authors were going to handle the story telling meaning, where they going to focus on couples, or individuals, or storylines and it seems like they are jumping around a bit but it makes sense based on where the story is moving.

Speaking of the bad guys… of course, in romance, we are usually given that one bad guy we love to hate and yeah, RISING STORM, we sure are given one. It will be interesting to see just how bad he will get.

As with any good tv soap, there are twists and turns and there was one that I saw coming but hoped it wasn’t because it was SOOOO obvious. And this is the feeling I’m getting with A LOT of the characters and even overall plot. It’s been done. I guess, most soaps have, right? There’s the spoil brat, the “evil queen/bitch” type, the helpless victim that everyone wants to save, the weeping willow that will eventually break and find strength, the couple that is broken up over, well, you get it. So, while I’m disappointed in that, I’m going to try and enjoy the journey and the writing.

Lexi did a great job with this episode in continuing the drama and adding more to it and just enough suspense, angst and mystery to make the reader want to read the next episode. She knows how to write a bad guy, that’s for sure!

I was a lot more excited going into this installment then how I feel now. I blame this mostly on the fact that this second episode focuses a lot on Dakota Alvarez and the Senator. From the very beginning we see Dakota as a spoiled brat who couldn't be bothered to really care about anyone but herself, and I really had no interest in her woes or feelings. WHITE LIGHTNING goes deep into that. A lot of the developments around town revolve around her from what we can see in this installment and I was just glad to see it coming to an end. Yeah, I'm not a Dakota fan. Is it bad to wish that something bad would happen to her already so she gets a good dose of reality already?

That being said, I still found the whole setup interesting and I can't wait for all the secrets to boil over and explode in everyone's face! Seems like there's no one there that's not hiding something that could potential ruin the life they are trying to build or to maintain.

I think in the overall storyline, this one didn't quite provide enough advancement as I was hoping for but I'm ready for the next.

Episode 2, White Lightning, really let us get to know the evil doers of Storm. Again, we followed many point of views, but I'd say the main focus was on the characters who lie, cheat and create drama.

Where we could still feel the effects of the loss of Jacob, from book one, we really started getting into drama, dirty drama. Like the respected mayor who likes em young, and his sweet wife, who knows he cheats, and doesn't seem to care. And Dakota who is so self-absorbed and entitled that she can't possibly believe that her dad ever hit her mom, and if he did, it was mom's fault. Or the sheriff who ran the abuser out of town and now is trying to reap the benefits. Dang, what a handful of crazy's!

But what I love about these books, is it took me about 2 hours to read this short book. It was just the right amount of time that I could take of these people at a time. There are definitely some great characters here, and I think it it really, stinking cool that each book is written by a different author.

This episode ended way too fast for me. And I don't say that in a bad way! It's like watching your favorite show, and it feels like you just sat down, and it's over! You get sucked in so far that it seems like no time has passed! I most definitely want more. Like a favorite show that ended too quickly, yes, I feel satisfied with the episode, I just want more. And I'll get it when Episode 3: Crosswinds, comes out.

White Lightning continues quite nicely from where Tempest Rising left off. There's no wondering "Did I miss something?", or "Who is this character again?". You know where you are, you know who you're with. You know the gossip going around, and it's not surprising when you hear more. You're just as eager as every other person in Storm, TX, to hear the latest, and maybe whisper it to your new bestie.

Secrets, scandals (and those in the making), lies, love. I'm still in love with the Sheriff. I don't like the sleazy dirt-bag (and no, I won't tell you here who it is). I wish I could rattle some sense into the younger people. But I have to sit and watch what happens. And I can't wait!

There are a few things (and people) going down in this town. And you're not going to want to miss it!

Having not read Episode 1, I was initially a little confused about what was going on and all the jumping around between the characters. As I got used to it, though, I enjoyed it. I do recommend you start with Episode 1 first.

This book is mainly about Senator Sebastian Rush and his desire to be with Dakota Alvarez, a girl who is around the same age as his own daughter. Dakota's father, Hector, is run out of town by the Sherriff, who clearly has his own agenda when it comes to Dakota's mother.

Dakota refuses to acknowledge that her father was the abusive man her mother, sister, and the Sherriff all knew him to be, so she's devastated when he disappears. Sebastian swoops in to take advantage of her emotional distress.

Dakota's torn between trying to decide what's right, which would be staying away since he's a married man, or taking the comfort she needs from him. In the end she makes her choice, and it'll be interesting to see how it turns out in the future episodes.

Other people in the town and their side stories are featured as well. It seems like almost everyone in Storm, Texas has a secret, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it all plays out when the truth of their lies is revealed.

White Lightning is the second book in this serial tale set in Storm, Texas. This one is authored by Lexi Blake. You will want to read these in order and fair warning there may be *SPOILERS* if you haven’t read the previous installments.

We catch up on everyone in this small town but the story focuses on a couple of undesirable characters. Dakota Alverez is daddy’s girl and feels like she should be treated as a princess. Senator Sebastian Rush just happens to be a married man who likes chasing young princesses. The fallout from the previous story continues to spiral. This is soap opera story-telling at its best! I cannot wait for the next episode to come out so I can see where the characters of this messed up little town take us next!

I received an ARC of this book from InkSlinger PR in exchange for an honest review and as part of the book's release day promotions.

If you're still tuning in to this soap opera in print, then let me tell you that this second episode is just as hot and explosive as the first one. Of course, with Lexi Blake writing this installment, we can't expect anything else, right? I've loved Ms. Blake's BDSM contemporary romance novels as well as her paranormal and urban fantasy stuff. With White Lightning, she does what she always does best, which is capture a reader's attention from start to finish.

I feel like the whole opera gets more exciting with each episode. The scandal, the secrets, the drama, they seem to be escalating. I just love that.

What another great episode. This episode picks up pretty much where the last one left off and boy is this episode a doozy! A storm is coming and like with any good soap opera, the aftermath will leave you reeling. I can’t say much because I don’t want to give anything away. But, I will say this, this episode really knows how to pull you in. It really sucks you and leaves you begging for more. so the fallout continues from dakotas announcement at founders day celebration , in this book we find out that marylee is willing to go to any length to make sure her son becomes governor , some people are forced to take a long hard look at the choices they've made & the repercussions that come with those decisions especially for dakota . theres a lot of re-evaluating friendships & relationships but these have me hooked already , can't wait for more , pure genius to put a soap opera into books .

This episode is basically about Dakota Alvarez. This teenager is in a very bad place and makes some decisions that could completely alter her life. But make no mistake, the stories of the other Storm residence keep moving forward in this episode.

With so much going on in Storm, things are getting crazy. The sheriff is tired of the way Alvarez is treating his wife, and threatens him enough to make him leave. This quick departure has Dakota pining for the comfort and convenience of her father, and in a bar right next to the handsome and charming senator. With a little drink of the white lightning, where will Dakota end up? It will surprise you! This episode is narrated by Paul Boehmer is a quick listen that makes you crave to see where all those effected by the death of a loved one, the abuse of power and the way a young adult reacts to unexpected events will end up.

This is the second book in the Rising Storm series. Which is written much like soap opera style.

The book starts off with the Senator of Storm. Hes a real piece of work, screwing everything he can get his hands on as long as it isn't his wife. He is one person I can't wait to get their just desserts. Ginny has moved in with Jacobs parents at this point. The sheriff is trying to help the love of his life get away from her husband. To say this is s shit storm is an understatement.

If you are looking for drama, you found it. If you are wanting a super quick read...here it is. Happy reading!! :)

====================
Mein Fazit:

*I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.*

I enjoyed reading “White Lightning.” I thought Lexi Blake did a great job of getting inside the minds of the characters.

I also thought she did well with point-of-view. She stayed with one character at a time, didn’t head-hop, and thought like that character would think.

The last episode was mostly about Ginny. This one focused on Dakota, Senator Rush, the sheriff, and Joanna.

It was interesting to learn more about each of those characters, especially since they are all so different. So far, I don’t particularly like any of the characters, which may lead me to lose interest eventually. For now I am content with just learning more about them. Some of them are so twisted that I can’t help but stay glued to the pages because I want to see what despicable thing they will do next.

I know what the authors were going for when they called these stories “episodes,” but I don’t think the Rising Storm series can really be compared to television, because there is so much that goes on internally with the characters. Unless the TV episode had tons of characters talking to themselves or having “asides” like in theater, I can’t imagine this working very well for television. There’s just too much that goes on inside people’s heads.

It works for the story, because it’s a way to let the reader know things that no one else knows, but it wouldn’t work on camera, at least not how it is written.

For example, Dakota doesn’t tell anyone how she feels about Ginny or why she feels that way. Without knowing that, her behavior would seem really weird. Or, as another example, no one would understand Dakota’s motivation for what she does in the bar, since all that is revealed inside her head only.

So, my point is, I don’t think it’s accurate or even fair to compare these to television.

That’s okay, though. It doesn’t really matter what the authors call it. I’m just going to think of them as serial novellas, because each new one picks up where the last one left off. (By the way, I would recommend reading these in order.)

If you like stories with characters who have secrets, selfish motivations, and aren’t above manipulation, you should check out “White Lightning.” While there isn’t physical danger like I’m used to in the stories I typically read, there is plenty of tension and drama to hold my attention.

Like any good show, there's always the bad guys, the guys you love to hate. This book was, for me, written mostly around those characters, and Lexi Blake wrote those characters well. In the first book/episode so much happened. Lots of events, introductions to the people of Storm Texas and a few secrets and shocking moments were revealed. In this episode - which is the second, it felt a little slower paced as more time was focused on character development. That was not a bad thing of course. I still got to read about a few of my favourite characters Yes, Dillon Murphy is one of them. As well as watch more of the other story lines unfold a little bit more.

I was unsure how these books would play out. At first I thought perhaps after the first book of introductions, each episode/book would deal with their own characters, and their story allowing the other characters to visit throughout it - for lack of a better term. However, this is not the case. Blake just continued where Kenner left off. I find this a very unique and interesting writing situation. I am looking forward to the third book. I am excited to see how things play out. I love the idea of a different author writing a continuation of a story each time. It's kind of like the story game I used to play when I was a kid.. and now play with my children, where I start with an event, and the next person adds to that storyline, etc and so on. It's just even better with these wonderful authors doing it!

The only heaitation I have, and I am trying not to give spoilers here... There are a a few plots lines in this story that I can see them using as pure shock value type drama, in keeping with the soap opera theme. This is probably just the hopeless romantic in me.. but I really hope to see them not do that all the time. I am good with drama and twists and turns, and I understand thats what these authors are specifically trying to create and they are doing a great job. But I read romance for a reason.. I like my "Happily Ever Afters". On another note, the lovely authors of this series have also decided to make a Family Tree! This will come in handy for sure in keeping all the people straight in this little town. I reccommend you read the first book in this series "Tempest Rising by Julie Kenner" before this book as this is just a continuation of the first. This series is to be one long "show" if you will.

REVIEW: 3.75 stars---WHITE LIGHTNING is the second instalment in the multi-authored Rising Storm episodic serial focusing on the men and women of Storm, Texas. WHITE LIGHTNING is their continuing story of sex, lies, secrets, illegitimate children and family dysfunction: Peyton Place meets Dallas meet Dynasty-a soap opera styled storyline with a large ensemble cast of characters whose lives are connected through Storm, Texas.

Told from several third person perspectives WHITE LIGHTNING follows the aftermath of the accidental death of one of their own-Jacob Salt. As the small town of Storm Texas prepares for the upcoming election campaign of their very own Senator Sebastian Rush, we are witness to the Senator's dark secrets, and the potential for a scandal that could ruin him, his family and everything he has struggled to attain. While the Senator embarks on yet another affair, his family and the town blindly continue to support a man who is less than honest both in and out of the Senate.

WHITE LIGHTNING also looks at the struggling Alvarez family: daughter Dakota is about to find herself embroiled in a political scandal, while her mother suffers the potential disillusionment of her marriage and family. Joanne Alvarez is an abused spouse who has stoically stood by her man but the final straw sends her husband out of town when the Sheriff lays down the law.

WHITE LIGHTNING and the RISING STORM series is a dramatic tale where the people gossip while turning a blind eye to the actions of their own. There are several building story lines involving many of the town's people; their interconnected lives, their loves and their dark and dangerous secrets. There requisite evil takes many forms but the overriding sense of disaster continues to build.

The little town of Storm, Texas, is still reeling after the car crash, the Alvarez household is in shambles, but Senator Sebastian Rush doesn’t care much, besides how it affects his chances in the upcoming elections. Cold, calculating, cheating Sebastian, whose perfect political wife Payton seems unaffected by his indifference, but she is getting restless. A long-time good friend is making her reconsider her sexless life. While he’s looking for prey and drinking foul White Lightning moonshine at a nearby town, a nubile blonde catches Sebastian’s roving eye. Things do not happen exactly how he had hoped, but while he thinks he’s got it made, it’s the girl who might be the winner.

WHITE LIGHTNING is slower-paced than Episode 1, but no less captivating. Ms. Blake springs quite a few stunners, and lays the groundwork for so many more surprises. Senator Rush’s mother Pamela, however blinded by her admiration for her son and daughter-in-law, the formidable, scheming – and prejudiced – matriarch doesn’t miss a single thing that happens in her town, and is bound to cause a lot of trouble for many people. Senator Rush is a revolting, hypocritical pig; there, I said it, and it is going to be so much fun reading about it! It’s difficult reviewing without giving spoilers, but trust me, things are going to snowball out of control for some of the characters, and I wonder if some “good guys” and “bad guys” are going to cross that fine line that some of them are threading. Sheriff Murphy means well, but you know what they say about the road to hell…

Readers who might have missed Episode 1: Tempest Rising, will be able to follow, even though some important bits will elude them, but still it’s not too late. Ms. Blake’s writing is smooth and descriptive; she completely disappears behind the story so it feels like we’re flies on the wall, and the transition between Ms. Kenner and Ms. Blake’s style is absolutely seamless. So much is going to happen; it’s a good thing there’s only one week to wait between instalments, but it’s going to be a long week!
