Charles Spurgeon never wrote a commentary on the Gospel of John. But across nearly 3,600 sermons, he returned to it again and again, preaching Christ from its pages with the depth, passion, and expository faithfulness that made him the most celebrated preacher of the nineteenth century.

Now, those riches are gathered in one place. This commentary on John draws from the full breadth of Spurgeon's sermons and writings to create a verse-by-verse reference organized for preachers and teachers. Each section offers three kinds of exposition, in which Spurgeon opens the meaning of the text; illustration, drawn from his remarkable gift for story and analogy; and application, capturing the urgent exhortations he drew from Scripture. Language has been lightly updated for readability without losing the voice that has shaped evangelical preaching for generations.

Whether you are preparing a sermon, leading a Bible study, or reading for your own devotion, this volume places the Prince of Preachers by your side as you work through the Gospel of John.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) was England's best-known preacher for most of the second half of the nineteenth century. In 1854, just four years after his conversion, Spurgeon, then only 20, became pastor of London's famed New Park Street Church (formerly pastored by the famous Baptist theologian, John Gill). The congregation quickly outgrew their building, moved to Exeter Hall, then to Surrey Music Hall. In these venues, Spurgeon frequently preached to audiences numbering more than 10,000—all in the days before electronic amplification. In 1861, the congregation moved permanently to the newly constructed Metropolitan Tabernacle.
