Although repetitive at times with the chronological anecdotes and stiff language, it is still an incredible depiction from a first-hand source of one of islam's greatest champions and an icon of the Crusades. A must-read for any history nerd!

As a research book maybe. But to read just if you are interested in Saladin, better to find a biography. This book is so full of small episodes with battles and names that I find it almost impossible to concentrate. Not for me.

I read this as part of a short university course I was doing and it helped me get a good grade. The book is a very helpful insight into the crusades from the Muslim perspective.

Essential reading for anyone interested in the life of Yusuf bin Ayyub, although it should be remembered that this is very much a panegyrics in style
