Sapkowski studied economics, and before turning to writing, he had worked as a senior sales representative for a foreign trade company. His first short story, The Witcher (Wiedźmin), was published in Fantastyka, Poland's leading fantasy literary magazine, in 1986 and was enormously successful both with readers and critics. Sapkowski has created a cycle of tales based on the world of The Witcher, comprising three collections of short stories and five novels. This cycle and his many other works have made him one of the best-known fantasy authors in Poland in the 1990s.
The main character of The Witcher (alternative translation: The Hexer) is Geralt, a mutant assassin who has been trained since childhood to hunt down and destroy monsters. Geralt exists in an ambiguous moral universe, yet manages to maintain his own coherent code of ethics. At the same time cynical and noble, Geralt has been compared to Raymond Chandler's signature character Philip Marlowe. The world in which these adventures take place is heavily influenced by Slavic mythology.
Sapkowski has won five Zajdel Awards, including three for short stories "Mniejsze zło" (Lesser Evil) (1990), "Miecz przeznaczenia" (Sword of Destiny) (1992) and "W leju po bombie" (In a Bomb Crater) (1993), and two for the novels "Krew elfów" (Blood of Elves) (1994) and "Narrenturm" (2002). He also won the Spanish Ignotus Award, best anthology, for The Last Wish in 2003, and for "Muzykanci" (The Musicians), best foreign short story, same year.
In 1997, Sapkowski won the prestigious Polityka's Passport award, which is awarded annually to artists who have strong prospects for international success.
In 2001, a Television Series based on the Witcher cycle was released in Poland and internationally, entitled Wiedźmin (The Hexer). A film by the same title was compiled from excerpts of the television series but both have been critical and box office failures.
Sapkowski's books have been translated into Czech, Russian, Lithuanian, German, Spanish, French, Ukrainian, and Portuguese. An English translation of The Last Wish short story collection was published by Gollancz in 2007.
The Polish game publisher, CD Projekt, created a role-playing PC game based on this universe, called The Witcher, which was released in October 2007. There is also a mobile version of the game which has been created by Breakpoint Games and is being published by Hands-On Mobile in Western Europe,Latin America and Asia Pacific.
The English translation of Sapkowski's novel Blood of Elves won the David Gemmell Legends Award in 2009.

Разкошно илюстровано издание, включващо два разказа от сборника Последното желание: Вещер, подплатен с арта на Тимоте Монтен и По-малкото зло, видяно през очите на художника Уго Пинсон. Бях забравил какъв сладкодумец е Сапковски, та ако имах още един живот вероятно щях да препрочета цялата поредица :)

Два много мои любими разказа,които вече съм срещала в поредицата за Вещера. Илюстрациите на изданието са страхотни! Обожавам да се потапям в този свят,отново и отново!🐺

Последна книга за тази година! Специалното издание на "Сиела" с два от любимите ми разкази за Гералт е наистина страхотно илюстровано от Тимоте Монтен и Уго Пинсон Идеално за почитатели на поредицата!

"Il male è male, Stregobor. Minore, maggiore, medio, è sempre lo stesso, le proporzioni sono convenzionali, i limiti cancellati. Non sono un santo eremita, non ho fatto solo del bene in vita mia. Ma se devo scegliere tra un male e un altro, preferisco non scegliere affatto."
Un racconto denso di significato, di umanitá e di filosofia. Non mancano poi numerosi riferimenti a fiabe europee come Biancaneve, La Bella Addormentata nel Bosco, Raperonzolo e la Principessa sul Pisello. Piú che le descrizioni e le azioni dei personaggo il focus del racconto sta nei dialoghi tra i personaggi, che talvolta diventano veri e propri scontri d'ideali. Con uno stile sotto certi aspetti piú aderente al libro rispetto al volume precedente, l'illustratore Ugo Pinson riesce a dare degnamente giustizia agli eventi e ai personaggi, in particolar modo apprezzabili sono le caratterizzazioni di Renfri e dei suoi compagni. Sempre apprezzabile è inoltre l'articoletto a fine volume in cui si riassumono le vicissitudini della saga letteraria e della carrieea del suo autore, compresi i vari adattamenti che sono comparsi nel corso degli anni (miniserie, spettacoli teatrali, videogiochi, fumetti...). Spero con tutto il cuore che in Italia giunga anche L'Ultimo Desidero, perché di questa edizione illustrata non ne avró mai abbastanza.

I loved it so much! I think it is my favourite Witcher-related story so far. It is seemingly simple but the moral dilemma Geralt faces is truly grim; the more you know about the situation more grey it becomes until it’s impossible to side with one side or the other

Oggi sono qui per parlarvi di un'altra bellissima opera che Giunti ha portato nelle nostre librerie.
Come sapete sono una grandissima amate del genere, quindi quando ho avuto l'occasione di leggere quest'opera, non ho potuto di certo sottrarmi, inoltre da amante di The Witcher beh, due più due non fa un pesce!
Se avete giocato ai giochi e visto la serie tv, sicuramente conoscerete la storia che viene narrata in questo primo volume della serie graphic novel che Nord ha portato in Italia, ma allo stesso tempo è possibile leggere i volumi senza una vera continuity e al tempo stesso senza aver né giocato, né visto, né letto nulla poiché fanno anche da prologo alle storie basilari.
Andiamo a parlarne giusto un po':
come nella serie tv, anche questa volta vedremo scene già note ma disegnate in modo del tutto diverso poiché i personaggi rispecchiano i romanzi e i videogiochi.
Nella storia ci ritroveremo il giorno in cui a Geralt di Rivia verrà dato il soprannome di macellaio di Blaviken e racconto inoltre contenuto nel primo volume romanzato della saga.
Una leggenda narra che ci fossero bambine uccise in culla perché durante nate durante un eclissi che per le superstizioni si diceva fossero destinate a diventare malvage.
Ovviamente Geralt non ci ha mai creduto anche perché anche di lui credono sia malvagio solo perché un Witcher ma in realtà lui non fa del male agli innocenti. Per questo quando il mago Stregobor vuole che lui uccida l'unica sopravvissuta di quelle bambine, Renfri, Geralt rifiuta.
Ma il destino è crudele col nostro Witcher e metterà sulla sua strada proprio la ragazza che ruberà una parte del suo cuore che si dice non possa provare sentimenti.
" Il destino è solo l'incarnazione del desiderio dell'anima di crescere."
Ammetto che fisicamente preferivo le fattezze della serie tv, per Renfri, ma questo è solo un gusto personale. Ho sentito sulla pelle molto più forte gli avventimenti che lì non venivano narrati per bene e non avendo letto il libro posso sollo fare un esempio su cinematografia e novel.
La storia è stupenda, accompagnata dalle illustrazioni che rendono anche più potenti e tristi molti avvenimenti.
Spero di cuore che la casa editrice produca anche altre storie in questa forma, su Geralt, perché ho bisogno di vedere Ranuncolo e anche Yennefer in questa versione. Super consigliato!

Das Buch wurde mir freundlicherweise vom Verlag als Rezensionsexemplar zur Verfügung gestellt. Dies beeinflusst jedoch nicht meine ehrliche Meinung.
Natürlich ist dies nur meine persönliche Meinung und nur weil ich diesem Buch diese Bewertung zukommen lassen, heißt es nicht, dass es auf jeden anderen zutrifft.
Ich habe die Kurzgeschichte bereits in der „normalen“ Ausgabe gelesen und war so aufgeregt die Geschichte nochmal als illustrierte Version zu lesen. Für die Menschen, die nur die Serie gesehen haben: Diese Ausgabe ist die Geschichte von Folge 1 der ersten Staffel von The Witcher.
Zuerst muss ich mal anmerken wie RIESIG dieses Buch ist. Ich kann es definitv nur in mein Regal legen weil es ist viel zu groß um es hinzustellen. Es ist locker zwei Handlägen hoch.
Die Illustrationen und auch die Zusätze sind einfach wunderschön gestaltet. Ich habe es sehr genossen nochmal in diese Geschichte einzutauchen. Die Handlung war mir natürlich nicht unbekannt aber auch hier hatte ich wieder Spaß beim Lesen. Die Illustrationen sind in Farbe und diese rechtfertigen aufjedenfall den eher höheren Preis.
Fazit
Aufjedenfall eine Empfehlung für alle Witcher Fans!

Deuxième nouvelle sortie à part en grand format illustré.
Nous avons ici une des plus célèbres nouvelles du Sorceleur, celle lui valant son surnom de Boucher de Blaviken. Tout comme le premier tome, et malgré un illustrateur différent, les dessins sont véritablement réussis. J'ai une fois encore particulièrement apprécié les plans urbains que je trouve magnifiques.
Tout comme pour le tome précédent, je ne m'attarde pas sur l'histoire puisqu'il ne s'agit pas de l'édition sur laquelle je compte revenir.

Jsem strašně ráda, že jsem tyhle audioknihy objevila, protože teď je to můj denní chleba. Kdykoli doma něco dělám, tak si k tomu pustím Zaklínače a hned je ta práce lepší. I tahle povídka byla skvělá, bavily mě hlavně dohady Geralta a Renfri. Neuvěřitelně to mezi nimi jiskřilo, přestože Renfri byla pořádná slepice. Ale po tom, co se jí všechno stalo, jsem se ani moc nedivila. Celé provedení audioknihy opět bezchybné a samozřejmě se už třesu na ty další povídky.

Non ha più senso che io recensisca qualcosa di Sapkowski… potrebbe scrivere l’elenco telefonico e gli darei cinque stelle. Renfri, poi, è una delle sue anti-eroine che preferisco. E Geralt è Geralt, in tutte le forme e in tutte le salse; non si discute, si ama.

Nel corso della sua vita lo strigo aveva incontrato ladri dall'aspetto di consiglieri municipali, consiglieri municipali dall'aspetto di accattoni, prostitute dall'aspetto di regine, regine dall'aspetto di vacche pregne e re dall'aspetto di ladri. Ma Stregobor aveva sempre avuto l'aspetto che secondo tutte le regole e le rappresentazioni dovrebbe avere un mago. Era alto, magro, curvo, con grandi sopracciglia bianche e cespugliose e un lungo naso adunco. Come se non bastasse, indossava una veste nera lunga fino a terra, con maniche straordinariamente larghe, e teneva in mano un lungo bastone con un pomo di cristallo. Nessuno dei maghi conosciuti da Geralt era come Stregobor. La cosa più strana era che Stregobor era davvero un mago.

maybe it’s because i don’t know fantasy or because i read this for school but i didn’t understand anything in this book. it also made me very upset; it was just bad. hopefully the netflix show is better.

After watching seasons one and two of The Witcher, I'm finally reading all the books. I know, I know, "What took you so long!?" Well, I don't really know, but I'm happy I'm reading The Witcher now.
I absolutely loved Geralt in the show and love him in The Lesser Evil as well. He is such a badass.

The illustrations in this book are absolutely beautiful and I got sucked back into the world of the Witcher immediately. This short story is so poignant, giving us a terrifying and fascinating tale about choosing the lesser evil, and it makes me want to reread all the Witcher books again.
