When crime is stranger than fiction…
Freezing rain cloaks Motor City in a veil of fog that marks the final stretch of a long, brutal winter, as Maxine opens her own private investigation firm, finally branching out solo, a perfect fit to her brassy rule bending and reckless style. Settling into motherhood with the kind of raw nerve that fosters her teenage daughter in ways that could ruin them both, Max takes her work/life balance in stride, ever supported by the one man who'd do anything for her. It's a fresh start and well deserved, albeit a daring one.

Private investigation proves duller than she anticipated, but when her former lieutenant, Carter contacts her about a murder more puzzling than anything his department has ever seen, Maxine is thrown into a case like no other. And this time she must investigate alone.

A struggling writer has been thrown from the roof of a fifty-foot building. He's not from Detroit. The roof is sealed. There's no clear explanation of how he got up there or why he fell to his death. As Maxine discovers evidence, it only adds to the confusion that swarms the mysterious circumstance. And soon Max realizes the more she learns the less she trusts the pieces.

An unlikely partnership, Maxine's daughter works by her side, having been suspended from school. Kaitlyn has an unusual knack for putting the pieces together, but those pieces form a picture that surrounds Maxine's dark past.

The closer they get to discovering who the killer is, the deeper into danger they find themselves. If anything were to happen to Kailtyn, the panic would pull Max into the darkest recesses of her disorder, but that's where this case is headed. And it could be her last.
