Get ready for a trip down the modern-day version of Carroll’s rabbit hole. As soon as Michael Aulden steps out of his jeep in Iraq, he enters a world where time is random, place varies on a whim, and his past changes at the beck and call of someone else. Michael may be one of the 36 pure souls who are tasked by God to hold creation together. His job is to protect the world from the Prophet, the most dangerous man in the world. The Prophet’s goal is to destroy evil in the world so only good is left. He seems to may have the power to do it. However, the consequence of his success threatens the basis of creation itself. Michael is chosen to defeat the Prophet because Michael also wants to rid the world of evil. Apparently, only a person like Michael, who has the same goal, can stop the Prophet. Michael has been sucked into this realm of unreality, and now he has to figure out the weird rules of creation through the looking glass. It all revolves around the concepts of Yetzer ha-ra (impulse for evil) and Yetzer ha-rov (impulse for good) and their importance on being human.
The story is filled with reality checks and misses. Michael has a girlfriend (Susan) and his form changing guides who try to help him with riddles. The experiences don’t necessarily become clues one can use to solve the mystery. In fact many could be taken out without losing the thread of the story – and many more could be added in. The length of the book seemed to be determined by the number of the illogical experiences that Chopra decided to wrap into the package. For me, it seemed to be just about right. I found the whole Yetzer thing to be an interesting explanation for the importance of good and evil.
This book was not as engaging as I had hoped it would be. It was an overdone attempt to use physical and philosophical elements of the religious traditions to reveal core concepts of spiritual truths that are present in New Thought as well. It appeared to be trying to marry the two perspectives, but it was awkward in its efforts, and an unnecessary effort. Spiritual truths never change. It is only people's interpretations of them that differ. So, people should be allowed to embrace whatever suits their journey.
I'm really curious how much Dr Chopra had to do with plot and character development, because it was really well done... A very intriguing premise, a prophet with supernatural powers, and what was he really up to? I was really hoping that in a novel format Dr Chopra could illuminate for me the spiritual truth that we "create our own reality". He took a good shot at it, but I'm still baffled. I suspect it's one of those things we each have to discover for ourselves.
A ripping good story anyway! And btw the only edition of this book that is on Goodreads is the audio book, but I actually read a paperback that I found at a used book sale.
Only read about 1/3 of it. Story didn’t interest me. Too much religion in it for me. I was hoping it would be like The Return of Merlin which was 5 stars!
This was an interesting novel set in today's world. It has an apolcalyptic flair and subtly describes our world and the worlds around us, using a mixture of religious beliefs and symbols from the past and present day. There was no gratuitous sex or violence. The plot moved fast enough to keep everything interesting and I always wondered what would happen next. By the end of the book, I felt like I had learned something, just by having a good time reading.
