Before you could tuck it under your arm, before you could bring it up on your phone – you did not read Scripture, you listened to it.
For centuries, the only way to access God’s Word was to hear it read aloud in public gatherings. Today, many are blessed to own personal printed copies of the Bible but there is a surprising benefit to hearing the Scriptures read aloud as it was for so many generations.
Verses you have read many times will impact you in a new way when you hear them through the NIV Listener’s Audio New Testament. Read in a single voice with subtle background music, Max McLean’s skillful, engaging, but never over-dramatized style will bring God’s Word to life during your personal and family devotion times, group Bible study, or during your weekday commute.
Listen just 6 minutes a day to hear the New Testament twice a year. Max McLean’s skillful narration will help you understand, memorize, and enjoy God’s Word.
"These are the most engaging recordings of the Bible I have ever heard.”

"He sounds as you might expect the writers of the text to sound if they were speaking instead of writing... McLean reads the Bible like it is the Word of God."
Donald Whitney
Professor of Biblical Spirituality, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

Wow, I never thought this day would come. I finally finished listening to the NIV version of The Holy Bible. It took me three years, although it was sporadic. And how does one give a star rating to it? This reader doesn’t. It’s been the iconic basis for the religions of millions of people. There have been wars fought over it and its meaning. If I were to give it a star rating I’d likely start a battle. Here is what I will say. The Bible is not what you think it is. Even if you’ve sat in church your whole life listening to passages being read and discussed, you can’t really get it until you’ve read the whole thing. Anyone can select passages to teach or support a position, but unless it is read in context to the whole, it’s easy to misinterpret.
The Bible was written by many authors over centuries. It was passed down by memory for hundreds of years before it was actually recorded, and even the written text is 2000 years old. The Bible contains history, myth (unless you are a fundamentalist insisting there really was a whale who swallowed Jonah and a Garden of Eden with a serpent, etc.) spiritual comfort, moral guidance, legal advice, poetry, parable and more.It is repetitive and could have used an editor other than the medieval monks who transcribed and translated it.
The Old Testament contains unthinkable aggression and violence. And yet it speaks of a faithful and loving God. The New Testament has some radical instruction about how we should be treating our fellow humans, and (spoiler alert) it is much better than we do, still! When we look around us at the role of religion in history, it’s hard to reconcile it to the message of love, forgiveness and redemption that is emphasized in the New Testament. There are faiths that insist the only message of the Old Testament is to predict the coming of Jesus. Then there are faiths that ignore the Old Testament as well as those that ignore the New Testament
Undoubtedly the writers of the New Testament were familiar with Old Testament scriptures and made frequent reference to them. Jesus frequently quoted OldTestament scripture.
I’d be willing to bet that some of the most outspoken religious spokespersons have not actually read the entire Bible.it was written for people in a particular place and time. Many of its messages are incredibly relevant to us today. Some, not so much. But I’d urge every religious person as well as every non religious person to read and understand what is in this book. It contains wisdom, comfort, and life changing ideas. If you agree or disagree with some of the concepts, you really need to know what it is you’re talking about. The Bible has always been and continues to be impactful, beautiful, and radical.
Officially read/listened to the Bible yay! I think everyone should go through it once considering it’s impact on human development. I highly recommend listening to this audiobook version as Max McLean does a fantastic job and I’ll hear his voice anytime I read scripture now
