Frequently Asked
Do I also need the actual book The Screwtape Letters to do the study?
Yes. The study guide includes discussion questions, character sketches, commentary, and more, but you will need the book to read corresponding chapters that go with each weekly lesson.
How long is the study?
The study is twelve weeks covering two-three chapters per week. However, the study can easily be formatted to an eight or ten week study based on your schedule.
Does each person in the study need their own study guide?
Yes. It’s most helpful for learning purposes if each person has their own study guide to answer questions and to make notes. However, couples might find it convenient to share the C.S. Lewis book for reading purposes.
Can anyone lead the study?
Absolutely! The study is created in a discussion based format allowing any leader to simply guide participants through each study question at weekly meetings.
Can I get access to the answers for each discussion question?
Yes. The answers for each discussion question are available for free online! In addition, we provide a Scripture Reference sheet for each Bible passage to save valuable class time.
We used this study guide for our small group reading of The Screwtape Letters.
It was pretty good. I liked that each chapter had some scriptural tie in. I really appreciated the character and letter summaries as well - super helpful.
I thought each letter had far too many questions. The letters are short enough that you'd want to cover 2-3 a week, but there were too many questions to make that realistic. We ended up picking out 4-5 questions per letter and just completing those.
Some questions were good, but others could have been a lot deeper. I don't think there was enough scripture to call it a "bible study" but I was thankful to have the study to shape and guide our discussions. It served its purpose, but didn't knock my socks off.
I read this along with the C.S. Lewis book, The Screwtape Letters, to help me focus as I read the letters for a Lenten discipline. I felt like the study guide was helpful, but I probably could have done with out it. Still, it helped me think through the letters somewhat.
I've read "The Screwtape Letters" before, but this was the first time for me to use the study guide written by Alan Vermilye. I used this to lead my small group bible study at work, and it was the perfect lesson guide for me to highlight key concepts and questions from each chapter.
The lesson guide also comes with many questions you can use to facilitate a small group. Going through "The Screwtape Letters" as a group and using this lesson guide helped me get a great deal out of the book and it really drove home key elements and topics.
Pros: excellent summary and study guide for C.S. Lewis "The Screwtape Letters." Cons: none really. Bottom Line: I highly recommend anyone to use this study guide if you're interested in leading your small group bible study through "The Screwtape Letters" or if you're just looking to get more out of this C.S. Lewis classic.
3-3.5 stars. This study guide was helpful in reading The Screwtape Letters because the questions underscore the main points of the chapter, which can definitely be hard to digest. You will get far more out of the book, if you also read the study guide and if you discuss in a small group. The guide could have been a 5 star if it had 1 - deeper questions, 2 - the scriptures referenced printed out in the guide so you don’t have to look them up, and 3 - the answers to the questions asked in the guide at the back of this book rather than in a separate on-line document.
My group bought this study guide in case we needed help discussing each letter; however, after struggling to understand the correlation with some of the quoted Scriptures (they didn’t match the content), we ended up having our discussions and allowing God to lead the conversation. I did enjoy going through the questions by myself and using this guide as a base because it added direction when the conversation veered off course. If you’re a group that needs a structured course, then this will be a great study guide for you. My group, however, is not like that, so while there were some good questions, we didn’t use this workbook as often as we thought.
A study guide created as a compliment to C.S. Lewis' class read on the Screwtape Letters. Clear and concise with thought provoking questions for individual and group study. Effectively brings much of the material into the post Christian arena of the twenty-first century. It will definitely make my job much easier as we delve into the book later this spring.
This study guide is great to amplify the reading of CS Lewis' book. The questions are designed to be thought provoking and are a great springboard for group discussion. We are also really enjoyed that the guide includes scripture references to illustrate points from Screwtape's letters.
Love this book as you read this it gets you thinking. I can really see Satan and him cohorts talking like this. I'm sure there is much truth in this fiction story line. We need to always put on the full armor of the Lord.
This book will test your faith. It opened my eyes to new ways about my religion and really expanded my knowledge of how the devil thinks. Think: the devil is fast, god is patient. I would recommend this to any person who wants to further their spiritual journey
Definitely helps with any study group you have on this book. Would suggest also downloading the answers and reflecting on if all of the questions are needed to be answered, or just a gist of them.
Really liked this study guide. I have always wanted to read Screwtape but always felt my mind drifting when I tried. This kept me on track. I feel like some sections were a bit light on the questions and could have had some extra depth. But, overall, a solid guide.
My book club picked this book for the January 2016 selection. I have read The Screwtape Letters several times in the past. So after reviewing the book quickly, I decided to delve into this study guide.
The guide was perfect to help me study some of the finer points in the book. I'm glad I went through it because I think our book club discussion will be more lucrative because of it.
This is a great study guide for groups that want to investigate The Screwtape Letters more thoroughly.
