It's time for some mischief and magic during the holiday season in Regency England! In Lord of Misrule the ever popular Lady Priscilla and Sir Neville are once again drawn into a mysterious murder that must be solved by the Twelfth Night ball. In A Delicate Footing a sprained ankle has not only endangered Sophy Templeton's chance to return to her missionary work in America, but a First Foot challenge is issued for Sophy's hand in marriage. Will the right man be the first one to cross the threshold on New Year's Day and win her hand? In On the Twelfth Day of Christmas, My True Love, the past, three men who have become betrothed to Miss Emma Partrick came to disastrous ends. Can Nathaniel Evander break the bad luck spell that seems to haunt Emma, or will he be the next casualty?
Please note, this author also writes under the name J.A. Ferguson, Jocelyn Kelley and Rebecca North. "One of my favorite memories is lying on the grass on a knoll on a late summer day and telling my sister stories I was making up," says Jo Ann Ferguson, who also writes as J.A. Ferguson, Joanna Hampton, Jo Ann Brown, and Rebecca North."There's something magical about being able to spend time with people you enjoy in your imagination. As a writer, I get to go with my characters to their time and place so I can share their adventures and falling in love for the first time…all over again."
She has had a few adventures of her own, including a stint as an Army quartermaster officer where she was the first and only woman in her unit. She still enjoys traveling to the locations of her books and learning all about those places and people. Researching her novels is part of the fun. Whether it's ghosts, calling cards, how to fire an antique gun, or traveling to a world that exists only in her imagination, she pays a great deal of attention to the details that delight her reader. She's even learned a bit of Russian, Arabic, Welsh, and a lot of Regency slang.
Her work has been honored with award nominations from Pearl, ROMY, Romantic Times, Rom/Con, and Affaire de Coeur magazine. Amazon Books chose her novels to showcase. And Romance Writers of America bestowed the two ARTemis Awards for Jo Ann's Zebra Regencies: The Counterfeit Count and A Christmas Bride.
Nonfiction also appeals to her, because it's where she got her start, seeing her first byline when she was twelve years old. She contributed to an encyclopedia of the English Regency period published by Garland Press. For all three editions of the New England Chapter's Now That You've Sold Your Book…What Next?, she has served as co-editor.
Believing in giving back, Jo Ann has served Romance Writers of America on both the local and national levels. She has served on the national board as president as well as a director and at term as vice president. For her volunteer work, she was given RWA's highest honor, the Emma Merritt National Service Award. She is also a creative writing instructor. She was awarded a Massachusetts Art Grant to teach creative writing and then established several creative writing courses at Brown University. Many of her students have gone on to publishing careers of their own.
She lives in Massachusetts, where her favorite hero—her husband, Bill—and their children and two cats. She's not sure which is the most spoiled.
A Regency Yuletide was a pleasant read with three short stories for you to enjoy. The first story is about a death at the Twelth Night Ball. The murder must be solved before any of the guests can enjoy themselves. Normally all plans would be canceled and a funeral would be held but the last wish of the recently deceased is to continue all of the festivities. Unfortunately a dark cloud hangs over all the events and as the clues are uncovered murder is suspected. I thought this story was ok. I would have given it 2 out of 5 stars as a stand alone. The next story is a delightful story about a woman who returns from America to visit her family. She is going to return and continue being a missionary until she falls and badly sprains her ankle. She has to wait for the doctor to clear her to travel. She is not patient, and does not want to wait. Her brother is well meaning and he decides to set up some of his friends to come court his sister while she convalesces. She does not want anything to do with them, but after a while, she starts accepting their attention. You will have to read to find out if she refuses everyone, or if she accepts the attentions of any of the men. I liked this story, the main character is a bit rude, and I thought could be nicer, however I would give this story 4 out of 5 stars. The last Yuletide is an unbelievable tale of a beautiful girl who cannot be engaged without her suitors dying. Three suitors and three deaths. Some think she is cursed, but there may be one man who is willing to brave his life, to win her heart. I liked this story and would have given the individual story 4 out of 5 stars. Overall this Regency Yuletide is a delight to read.
This book has three enjoyable Regency holiday romances. All of them were pleasant. They all had likable characters and interesting storylines. They were what I would expect from holiday short stories. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing an ARC in return for an honest review.
