The novel was a finalist for the PEN/Winship Award and won the Anthony Award and the Barry Award for Best Novel, the Massachusetts Book Award in Fiction, and France's Prix Mystere de la Critique.

First of all, I love these authors, and I LOVE the characters they write (Patrick Kenzie from Dennis Lehane and Harry Bosch from Michael Connelly). So when I saw this short (coming from the anthology FaceOff) was released independently, I just had to get my hand on it. I KNEW going in, that this would be a SHORT story (one reviewer said it was only about 20 pages long). For some, $0.99 might be too expensive when comparing price over word-count element -- but to me, I don't always calculate that; what I'm looking for is the enjoyment.
OH MY, Patrick Kenzie meeting Harry Bosch!! I totally NEVER thought it could happen!! Both men practically live in separate area and it is very unlikely for their world to ever come cross. So this was a nice surprise!! Because the story happened just within few hours, it was over pretty quick.
The year was 2005 --- it was the early years of Bosch joining Open/Unsolved Unit after walking away from his job, while in Patrick's life, he was just about to become a father. Anyway, Bosch was coming to Boston to try getting a DNA of a possible suspect of a homicide back in 1990 while Patrick was following up clues of possible abductor of currently missing girl. The man that Bosch and Patrick was looking for was the same man, so they both worked together for a short moment where they needed to check on the man's house.
It was fun reading the 'introduction' about how the story came to be. I mean, it was rather cute that Connelly had to wait for several weeks for Lehane to come back with his part of the short, only for Lehane to send a complete one *laugh*. I thought the voice of both authors came through nicely. The story was written from both Bosch and Patrick's perspectives and I could notice the difference. Bosch's part was a bit more detailed (as in narrative description), Patrick's was using more dialogs. Bosch's voice was more serious while Patrick's was lighter and more humorous (especially regarding to the L.A. vs. Boston jokes).
It was also nice to read Patrick's voice in third person (all of Patrick's books are in first person).
So yes, all in all, I liked it. I wish it was longer, but it still worked as short story. Plus I got the joy of reading Bosch meeting Patrick :)

“You cleared this floor? How long were you planning to leave me out on the front porch?”
“I figured another half an hour before you snapped and kicked in the door. I didn’t have that kinda time.”
“LA sarcasm,” Patrick said as they headed down the hallway. “Who knew?”
It was also nice to read Patrick's voice in third person (all of Patrick's books are in first person).
So yes, all in all, I liked it. I wish it was longer, but it still worked as short story. Plus I got the joy of reading Bosch meeting Patrick :)

Bosch comes across as softer than usual, and less prickly, but the overall story is a good one.

First Sentence: As a practice, Harry Bosch did his best to Stay out of Tunnels but as he came out of Logan Airport, a tunnel was unavoidable—either the Ted Williams or the Sumner, take your pick.

The meeting of the two characters is a very good exchange of “I’ll show you mine..” with good contracts between the LA and Boston styles.

It was great to see Harry Bosch and Patrick McKenzie team up, if only for the time of a short story.
Harry, still with the L.A.P.D. cold case squad flies to Boston to get a DNA sample of a suspected killer from a 1990 case. Soon enough his path crosses with McKenzie who’s looking for the same guy for the current disappearance of a 12 year old girl.
It’s too bad the story was so short. Still, it was enjoyable, mostly because both celebrated characters were very recognizable, depicted as we know and love them. I sure hope they meet up again for a longer story this time. There's no one better than Michael Connelly and Dennis Lehane who are masters at their craft.

A bit lame, I expected more from a collaboration between these two phenomenal authors. It is, however, well written and a solid narrative. Worth reading it just to figure out at which point Connelly stopped writing and Lehane took over...

Two great characters. One exciting plot. Even though this was a short story, it packed a lot of punch into a few words. I was drawn in from the first sentence and lost sleep until the last. Really good story.

A quick easy short read and I enjoyed the opportunity of meeting Dennis Lehane's character Patrick Kenzie. He and Harry Bosch should get on just fine in the future (maybe).

Strong short story combining the rich and diverse talents of two celebrated authors. Each contributes their own element of a story that briefly unites their fictional creations in a stake out.
I especially liked that they were true to their characters. Harry Bosch is clearly uncomfortable from minute one after landing in Boston; Patrick Kenzie is on his familiar turf, but it is his chance meeting with the LA cop that saves his investigation.
Simply put; this is a believable encounter and mutually beneficial to both parties. It has enough aspects of these individuals traits and foibles, (like not so subtle ‘product placement’), to please fans of each writer in this joint effort.
Their first encounter is memorable and as intense as a prize fight weigh-in. Thereafter, the tension rapidly rises as the pace of the narrative goes through the gears.
The casual reader liking what they see may well be encouraged to turn to each author’s extensive catalogue and find new heroes to follow and a fresh crime thriller series to mine. For this is a golden nugget of collaboration.

Connelly and Lehane short story-what fun! Novels run deeper of course but these characters known so enjoyed different interaction.

At the end of 2014 an anthology, curated by the International Thriller Writers organisation, brought together 23 of the world’s bestselling and critically acclaimed thriller writers who paired their series characters into 11 stories. It was entitled Face Off.
Today one of those stories, Red Eye, has been released on Kindle for 99p. This Short Story Dagger-shortlisted original, featuring Dennis LeHane’s Patrick Kenzie and Michael Connelly’s Harry Bosch, doesn’t disappoint.
Both of these iconic characters are circling the same bait for different reasons. Bosch is pursuing a cold case which brings him into Kenzie’s territory who is on the trail of the same potential perp for a case in the present day.
The absolute joy of such a collaboration is in seeing how seamlessly the pieces fit together. Like Connelly’s done the corners so LeHane can easily fill in the middle.
Connelly apparently started the ball rolling by emailing a few pages which started the story, along with some exploratory notes with potential angles to LeHane of whom he expected to add a few more pages.
Weeks passed and Connelly heard nothing back so dropped another mail to check his first had been received. LeHane then replied turning in a finished story which had solidly evolved the plot from Connelly’s shorthand to the completed piece. The distinctive voice of each author is present yet both are harmonised into a complimentary whole.
The Beantowner and Angeleno delightfully size each other up. Kenzie on Bosch:
‘Patrick got a whiff of something sad coming off the LA cop. Not the kind of sad that came from bad news yesterday but from bad news most days.’
The two-hander switches point of view from one character to the other and this along with the short form and time-limited problem jacks the tension and draws on old fears as two iconic characters face off.

Thirty pages aren't enough to accomplish what this piece wants to, at least not in a satisfying way. This short story introduces Patrick Kenzie and Harry Bosch to the reader, then introduces both characters to each other, and then introduces each character to the other's case so they can work together and solve both. Yes, in thirty pages.
It would make a great novella, though, so three stars instead of two.

LA and Boston
I live in LA and I love it. I lived in the Boston area for about 14 years. The interaction between the two cultures is electric. Crime doesn't stand a chance. Great short story.

Fun
Some of the short stories by my favorite authors have been too short and too contrived. This combo fit like a glove. Fast and compelling. Although we are not used to short stories with big characters, this short was satisfying.

Red Eye was a quick book to read, which was how this book was designed. Red Eye is a collaborative effort between Michael Connelly and Dennis Lehane and centers around the two authors signature heroes, Harry Bosch and Patrick Kenzie. This was a really fun book to read and I highly recommend this book to any Connelly/Lehane fan.

This short collaborative was my first introduction to both authors and their pet crime fighting characters. Now I want more of both. Boston and LA, private investigator and detective. This short could easily be worked into a full length novel.

First in a new marathon and this one is working through thee Face Off collection where two authors and two of the creations face off. This one sees Patrick Kenzie and Harry Bosch. It was ok but it felt like both authors were playing away and it missed something.

3 stars only because I’m such a fan of Dennis Lehane, and his Patrick Kenzie character. Angie has a brief cameo too. I haven’t read any Bosch but he was interesting, so I may check out those books too.

Loved it. It was simple as it needed to be. The short story is part of an anthology collection featuring writers and their beloved suspense/thriller writers. While I might not read the rest of the short stories, I'm a big Lehane fan so this was a nice little read about Patrick Kenzie.

Great read
Enjoyed the story. I've never read any books by Dennis Lahane. The character Pactrick Kenzie and his stories sound interesting. I'm glad that Mr.Connelly and Mr. Lehane collaborated on this story. Thank you both.
