The History attributed to Sebeos is one of the major works of early Armenian historiography. Although anonymous, it was written in the middle of the seventh century, a time when comparable chronicles in Greek and Syriac are sparse. Sebeos traces the fortunes of Armenia in the sixth and seventh centuries within the broader framework of the Byzantine-Sasanian conflict. Comprising two volumes, part 1 (240 pages) is the translation and notes followed by part 2 (216 pages) which contains the historical commentary, this excellent publication will be of interest to all those involved in the study of Armenia, the Caucasus, the Eastern Roman Empire and the Middle East in late antiquity. It will be of particular value to Islamicists, since Sebeos not only sets the scene for the coming of Islam, but provides the only substantial non-Muslim account of the initial period of expansion.

حالا جدا به منابع اولیه چجوری باید امتیاز داد؟
ترجمه‌ش خوبه.
یادداشت‌ها بسیار مفیده.
البته که متن کامل تاریخ سبئوس نیست. برای همین هم یک ستاره کم کردم.

در مطالعه تواریخ ارمنی/مسیحی همیشه باید یک نکته رو در نظر داشت؛ این نویسنده فقط روایت تاریخ ساسانی و روم و ارمنستان رو نمی‌نویسند. برای اون‌ها مسئله جدال حق و باطله. جدال مسیحیت با آدم‌های ناراست‌کیش.
به همین دلیل وقتی انوشیروان رو در آخر عمرش مسیحی می‌کنند نباید شگفت‌زده شد که این رو از کجا میگه. برای اون نویسنده قابل هضم نیست که یک شاه خوب به مسیح باور نداشته باشه پس حتما باید در بستر مرگ مسیحی شده باشه.😅
خلاصه که روح دینی شدیدا بر این کتاب‌ها حاکمه پس اگر می‌خونیدشون باید کنارش کلی چیز دیگه هم بخونید تا دید درستی به دست بیارید.

Really good. Sebeos manages not to inflict his Xian viewpoint on his neutral narrative of events. The historical commentary in a separate volume fills the picture out and picks out what one might miss or need explanation for eg the christianisation of the army in Egypt in league with the Greeks or that people, including Heraclius, were so convinced God was on the victorious Ismaelites' side they just gave in until their defeat at Constantinople when 'the host of soldiers were drowned ...for the sea opened its mouth and swallowed them' ie when God turned against them. The Ismaelites thought so too. They fought amongst themselves. Obviously they made a recovery but it did mean greater likelihood of resistance thereafter rather than facile submission. It's interesting to have so complete a version of these world-changing events from the fringe perspective of a small nation nonetheless affected by them.

کتاب بسیار خوبی است و خواندنش توصیه می شود. هرچند کتابهایی که در حکم کتاب های مرجع تاریخی محسوب می شوند، به این علت که نگاه محدودی را منتقل می کنند جهت آگاهی گسترده خواننده کمتر حرفه ای از آن دوره تاریخی جزو انتخاب های اول محسوب نمی شود، اما این کتاب به دلیل مقدمه بسیار عالی مترجم، پانویس های مبسوط و یادداشت های توضیحی در آخر هر فصل، ارزش بالایی برای خواندن دارد.
پنج ستاره هم ندادم که بالاخره، خود تاریخ فقط پنج میگیرد و روایت از آن حتما پنج ستاره نمی گیرد🙃. حالا انگار نظر من هم مهمه🤪
و در آخر هم اینکه در صفحه ۲۷۵ و در توضیح پانویس شماره ۲ "دد ستمگر" را ساسانیان معرفی کرده، که به نظر می رسد اشتباه باشد و منظور باید اسماعیلیان باشد.

An excellent translation of a vital historical source. Armenia was closely involved in the war between Rome and Persia and this history fills in a few fascinating gaps.
