This brief history of World War One was prepared upon the suggestion of the National Board for Historical Service. Its purpose is to expand into an historical narrative the outline of the study of the war which the authors prepared for the Board and which was published by the United States Bureau of Education as Teachers' Leaflet No. 4, in August, 1918.
This book is an introductory work on the History of the First World War. It can be useful for those who are not history majors but are interested in the subject. For those whose academic field is history, it contains nothing new and may even feel repetitive. The book is an example of American educational historiography. The work displays a very explicit bias. Its narrative is entirely Allied-centered, and it almost exclusively attributes the causes of the war to Germany. Although Germany’s major role in the outbreak and continuation of the First World War is certainly undeniable. It should also be remembered that the book was written in the early twentieth century (shortly after the war), so it is to be expected that it carries a certain degree of bias.
