Academics, longing for more influence, may wrongly fault irrationality, ideology, or ignorance for the failure of research to inform policy and practice more powerfully. He previously was Vice President of the MacArthur Foundation and Deputy Director of the Illinois Board of Higher Education.

This was an uneven book. It starts off promising. Some chapters were excellent, especially at the beginning on the different research methods. Others were highly arcane. At its best, it's well written and the thinking is at a high level; at its worst, it's plodding. It just needs to focus on what it's best at and leave out the rest.
