A tree can take root because it only has one leg. A man roams because he has two legs. He wanders about till he dies, and then is buried under a tree, to become a handful of dust.

God Has No Grandchildren (2015) is the translation by Kang Sunok and Melissa Thompson of 신에게는 손자가 없다 (2011) by 김경욱 (Kim Kyung-uk) and was book 18 from the Dalkey Archive Library of Korean Literature (see below).

As 권희철 highlights the protagonists in these stories, set in modern-day Korea, are typically torn as to whether to make a commitment, in theory minimising regret risk, but in reality allowing life to pass them by via their indecisiveness. And towards the stories end, a decision of sorts has been made, even if to the (from reviews here, often frustrated) reader, the conclusions of the story often appear ambiguous or absent.
The detective was sitting on a bench in the shade of the wisteria vines, his back hunched. He had shoved his hands deep into the pockets of his trousers, as if he were feeling a chill in the air. Stooped over, his head bowed, the detective looked like a gigantic question mark.
Worthwhile - 3.5 stars.

This is a masterpiece. I won't be extending on the idea because I wrote a seven page review on this collection of short stories, so I will copy paste down below the fragments that sum up my view on the lecture. Unfortunately, this review is written in Romanian, so only those who know the language can actually get an insight of my opinion. Sorry guys, but I really don't feel like translating every relevant fragment :(
Subiectul principal și mutual tuturor celor nouă parabole este comiterea – sau, mai bine zis, frica de a realiza acest lucru, cât și încercările personajelor de a nu mai fi echivoce și de a acționa, chiar dacă într-un mod destul de nesemnificativ, după cum afirmă și Kwon Hee-cheol în scurta sa critică intitulată ”Love – It Always Involves Hatred”. Este, într-adevăr, fobia de asumare a responsabilității ce pune protagoniștii poveștilor în situații precare și care îi împiedică din a-și îmbunătăți condiția fizică, mentală, emoțională, economică sau socială.
În concordanță cu subiectul anterior menționat ce stă la baza povestirilor alegorice, regăsim și alte teme care se împletesc substanțial în scopul revelării semnificației edificante a artei lui Kim Kyung-uk. Familia și iubirea sunt două elemente majore ce se întrepătrund în jocul destinelor care conturează valorile, cât și defectele societății umane a timpurilor noastre, iar orice greșeală este mai mult constructivă decât demoralizatoare. Este necesar să înțelegem că eșecul este cel ce propulsează dorința de evoluție ce zace stinsă în interiorul caricaturilor conturate de către autor, iar păcatele acestora nu sunt de condamnat, fiindcă reprezintă natura umană în cea mai onestă esență a sa, o natură perfectibilă, dar totuși efemeră și limitată de experiențe iluzorii și contradictorii. Fiecare narațiune dă senzația unui ”fever dream„ din care nu numai personajele, dar nici cititorul nu au nicio cale de evadare. Acest lucru este puternic accentuat de finalul, ironic, ”neterminat”, care lasă loc de interpretare, dar care oferă, totodată, și o enormă senzație de incompletudine. Aflându-te în poziția celui care lecturează, aceste ”lipsuri” sunt șocante, deoarece acestea apar în momentul cel mai inoportun al relatării de către autor – undeva între apogeu și deznodământ. Acest lucru nu poate să sporească decât frustrare în inima celor plini de curiozitate, iar răspunsurile pot veni doar de la sine, dar și acestea – chiar dacă nedrept – rămân doar presupuneri deșarte.

Ca o mică concluzie opinionată referitoare la titlu și însemnătatea sa pentru întregul volum, ”God Has No Grandchildren” se referă, pe de-o parte, la faptul că nu ar trebui să existe niciun mediator între om și divinitate, deoarece ființa umană ar trebui să fie responsabilă în mod absolut pentru cursul pe care aceasta și-l creează de-a lungul existenței sale efemere, netrebuind să se bazeze pe tentațiile iluzorii ale unei forțe atotputernice. Pe de altă parte, simt că această denumire este ștampila unui act total decisiv, și anume refuzarea de către Divinitate – sau Creator, cum este menționat în nenumărate cazuri pe parcursul narațiunilor – de a accepta orice relație cu specia umană care, până la urmă, este responsabilă – prin nenumăratele sale păcate – de moartea Fiului Său. Astfel, ar putea fi sugerat faptul că Dumnezeu nu iartă, iar că aceste nedreptăți și suferințe trăite de protagoniștii celor nouă povestiri alegorice sunt pedepse primite pe bună dreptate pe care aceștia trebuie să le îndure pentru a compensa gestul fatal al omuciderii unei entități sfinte și pure.
Universul are nevoie de un echilibru. Fără acesta, este predestinat să moară. Binele și rău se completează într-o relație amară, iar ființa umană trebuie să plătească la nesfârșit pentru păcatul primordial.

i really did want to give Kim Gyeong-uk's short stories a fair shake, but the same issue arises with every short story - the huge and wordy build-up of the plot doesn't find any conclusion in the end. and not in the fun way where it leaves you wondering or opens the story up to multiple endings. more like the story just remains incomplete? so far, i've essentially read 6 short stories that have no ending, it's just cut off halfway. i was really hopeful with Heinrich's Heart, but once again, the author spends so much time building up the story (which i would admit was done quite well if i wasn't so frustrated with what Kim does with it) only to leave it hanging to the point that it's impossible to speculate on possible endings.

These stories were entertaining and interesting. The commentary at the end was enlightening as well. The stories deal mostly with being able to commit to something (or not), and general values, etc. They all have a certain ambience, somewhere between spooky and lonely. My favorites were probably "99 percent", "The runner" and "The ups and downs of Hurricane Joe".

An excellent and lively short story collection in which our characters often suffer from both a lack of excellence and a lack of liveliness. Hesitant, buffeted, resigned, fearful, and at times just stubborn life comes at them from all directions demanding they be protagonists in their own story. How exhausting this is and I'm sure readers will find themselves relating uncomfortably directly with at least a few of these folk. A very nice and diverse collection, eminently readable translation.
