Even in Paradise things change...
All Cal Mackey wanted was to live out a peaceful existence and put his past in the rear view mirror. How better to live out his dream then to open a peaceful little bar in the Florida Keys? Far from the madness of war, Mackey lives his life on his own terms, mixing umbrella drinks for his customers and maintaining his anonymity.

But even in Paradise things change”...

Out of the darkness a mysterious ship docks behind The Paradise Shack and patrons begin to disappear.

What is the horrific secret that this vessel is carrying?

Now Mackey must rely on the set of skills he so desperately has tried to disavow. The conspiracy he will uncover will have more profound ramifications than just a few missing tourists. The ship’s purpose is more complex than he could ever imagine. A mission that is so unprecedented that Mackey will end up doubting his own loyalties.

No matter which side you find yourself rooting for, Trouble in Paradise will leave you wondering “what if?”

Trouble In Paradise - a review by Rosemary Kenny

Trouble is brewing in the Bahama seas as a pirate ship, the Rosalita finally catches up with its prey, the almost mythical Nocturne. When the captain Manuel Salazar climbs aboard and promptly vanishes
his crew-mates led by the Gallinas brothers follow cautiously and are overwhelmed with greed when they see the huge amount of loot - until they separate to look for more and discover they are not alone on this Marie-Celeste-type ship after all!
Some years later the same huge Nocturne arrives behind Cal Mackey's bar the Paradise Shack, taking up almost the whole berth and three of its passengers, the mysterious Rachel, her crippled father Wolfgar Von Robles and crewman/bodyguard Raimond, tell Cal the Nocturne has run aground with engine troubles and is going nowhere!

Who is Arthur Geiger and why is he willing to help Cal investigate the Nocturne after hours?
Who sees them arrive on board? How do they respond to the intrusion?
What secret is Von Robles hiding? How do Cal and Geiger escape from Nocturne?
Why does Von Robles need the prisoners? What is his arrangement with the Coast Guard?

This book which I received a free copy of, in return for an honest review, has extremely unexpected and at times shocking revelations as Cal and Geiger go all-out to discover the truth about the Von Robles family heritage and the secrets of the Nocturne - read it and you'll be amazed too!
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review.

The prologue started off with a bang…and then the book fizzled like a dud Roman candle. The idea of something supernatural aboard a luxury yacht cruising the waters around Florida seemed like an interesting idea, but it was poorly executed. The writing seemed pretty juvenile and bordered on being comic book dialogue. The main characters came off as a poor man’s Dirk Pitt and Al Giordino, from Clive Cussler. However, Lyle Howard is no Clive Cussler. Mr. Howard has a shocking! (and annoying!) overuse of exclamation points! making it seem as if everyone is shouting at each other! And, for the life of me, I cannot figure out why he had paragraph breaks the way he did, frequently in the middle of a conversation between two characters. Examples of the lazy writing of this book are: He starts out calling two characters Captain Wolcott and Lieutenant Crawford and a short time later they become Captain Crawford and Lieutenant Wolcott; he keeps switching back and forth throughout the book between calling one of the main characters by his first name (Artie), his second name (Geiger) and his title (Deputy) for no apparent reason. He also does this same thing, although less frequently, with the main character as well as some minor characters; a female character appears at the beginning and you are led to believe she will be a central character in the story - and then she just disappears from the book; and the Main villain character appears and then inexplicably disappears from much of the story before reappearing and then disappearing again until the end of the climax. The climax of the whole book was ludicrous and over wrought with a totally unbelievable epilogue. As another reviewer has pointed out, some of the plot devices are so ridiculous, they border on moronic. I am being generous giving this book two stars (in reality, one and a half) because I am not sure it was awful enough for that. But, it comes pretty damn close! Not only did I not like the book enough to want to read any other books by Lyle Howard, I have, in fact, deleted this book as well as two others that I had (but haven't read) from my library.

* I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review *
This is the first time I have read anything from Lyle Howard and I was hooked from the start.

Going into this book I wasn't really sure what to expect, and I was really surprised by how engrossing the story was. The start see a couple of men board a ship out at sea, I guess you would call them Pirates - the ship in question is eerily quite and at first I thought that it was a ghost ship. Then the men see shadows out of the corner of their eyes before everything goes black...

That was the hook for me, I wanted to know more about this ship and was strange things were going on below its decks.

Set in the Florida Keys, Cal runs a bar and when encounters a stunning young woman with a decrepit man in a wheelchair he is instantly committed to finding out more about her. He then discovers that a massive boat that is being docked behind his bar belongs to her and the old man, something set him off to want to investigate the ship. This leads him and his police friend to discover some things they shouldn't, and that leaves their life hanging on the line.

This is brilliant book and I loved the concept that the author has created for the ship, the crew on board, and the old man - brilliant idea, and not one I have ever encounted before in all the books I have read. It did leave a few unanswered questions though at the end but I loved it and read it in a day - it was that good I couldn't put it down.

I love a good mystery. I love venturing into the world of what if.
I am also very amused by the stories that start with an idea that someone has left a certain aspect of their life behind them and then the universe brings them a scenario where they have to use their knowledge from the past to get through a current situation. I believe that once we have a skill, we can never quite "let it lie" as we move forward in life.
The start of the novel had me hooked, it was so mysterious and left you wanting to know more.
Howard is a very talented author and I thoroughly enjoyed this adventure into "What if"
A mysterious vessel, missing patrons, the plot has so many twists and turns that you simply must read it to the end.

This is a great thriller. Cal thought that he was relaxing into his life at a little bar in Florida. That was until a mystery ship docks. Then to survive, he has to go back to some old skills he said he would never use again. It;s hard to decide whose side you want to be on in parts of this book, but by the end you are clearly on one side or the other. I love how well written this book is, I read it quickly because I didn't want to stop reading!

I received this product in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion/review/feedback.

Surprisingly intriguing

I didn't know what to expect - I had not read anything from this author before, but I like reading about places I've been & this one took place in Key West- so that interested me. This book was a fairly quick read & very hard to put down. This is not typically the genre I am drawn to - but it really kept me intrigued. I really like the authors inclusion of some 'light-hearted humor'; I would definitely recommend this book. I'll look for others from this author.

I didn't read the description of the book very carefully and didn't realize that I was reading a supernatural mystery until I came to the supernatural part. Normally, that is not my genre, but despite the fact that it had a supernatural component, I did enjoy Trouble in Paradise by Lyle Howard.
If 3.5 stars was a choice, that's what I would rate it.

'Thrilling' is an understatement!

This is my third Lyle Howard book and it is possibly the best one so far. I was captivated from page one. I won't give away the ending but it was quite thought provoking. A must read! Ready for number four!

This book has all the right ingredients.

The last page was the best page of the book, those aforementioned ingredients just didn't mesh for me. I had to force myself to finish it.
