In "Run Like a Champion," one of America's most versatile and accomplished runners, Alan Culpepper, reveals the best practices of the best runners.
Over his 25-year racing career, Culpepper won national titles from 5K to marathon, a span of race distances so wide that just a few runners can claim the same impressive versatility. Culpepper sets out his approach--and the lessons he learned from his competitors--so that all runners can fully realize their potential.
As a two-time Olympic competitor, Culpepper has a unique understanding of what it takes to compete at the highest level. His running career has put him on the start line alongside the world's best runners, and he has found that despite their many differences, talents, and approaches to training, among them they share a common understanding: the best athletes know that the secret to success in running lies in understanding a bigger picture of training.
Not everyone has the physiology to run at the highest level, but everyone can benefit from implementing an Olympic approach to training. "Run Like a Champion" shares a big-picture view of running, looking at not only the essential training elements but also other key pieces of the puzzle: identifying motivation; finding a proper work/life/family balance; and understanding complementary aspects of training such as stretching, how much to drink, diet, and how to avoid and treat injuries.
"Run Like a Champion" reveals all the guidelines, tips and tricks, workouts, mental training, and nutritional practices that Olympic runners use. By making this Olympic approach part of their running, runners of all levels will make their goals achievable from 5K to marathon.
Thanks to the publisher and author for making this book available for review.
First off, I am a long-distance runner, and I read a lot of non-fiction and fiction running books. So I was very excited to have the chance to read a book by an author with loads of experience. Alan will provide everything you need to train smart, eat smart, and prevent injury. When it comes to running, there is nothing more important. Although I question his take on static stretching, I found his advice on periodization training was very informative and much needed.
If you are a serious runner, or just an occasional runner, you will find some nugget of truth that will be valuable to you in this book.
Culpepper makes some rather interesting points especially towards the middle to the end of the book. Being someone who wouldn't be considered a beginner, the initial part of the book felt a bit tame but as it progressed talking about mental strategies for racing, coping with injuries and especially including a short cooldown routine and tricks to drinking more water the book wasn't a bad read at all.
For a beginner this book is comprehensive and even for more experienced runners, there is a lot to unpack within the book.
"Run Like a Champion: An Olympian's Approach to Running" by Alan Culpepper is a must read for all runners. The author's dedicated but common sense approach to running is extremely informative. His love for running is easily apparent, contagious and inspiring. Mr. Culpepper was a champion runner and is now a successful coach. The book contains first hand accounts of his training and racing experiences. He explains training, nutrition, injury prevention and mental strategies to help runners accomplish their goals. He explains techniques in detail for can be applied by beginners, intermediate & advanced athletes. The training chapters were exceptional but I think that the sections on nutrition and injury prevention will be the most helpful to recreational & competitive runners. YouTube videos which correspond to the book are professional & very helpful. I highly recommend this book for all runners and all athletes who use running as part of their training.
For anyone who runs slower than a six minute mile this might not be the book for you. That being said, there are some very useful ideas and training programs to help even regular schmoes like me run smarter and happier.
A very interesting book. Culpepper shares his personal experience but also talks about important issues often neglected: finding balance with family or work while training, fuel and hydration, psychology, racing etc. Full of interesting facts and advice. Loved it!
