James Robert "Jim" Davis is an American cartoonist who created the popular comic strip Garfield. Other comics that he has worked on are Tumbleweeds, Gnorm Gnat, Slapstick, and a strip about Mr. Potato Head.

Jim Davis was born in Fairmount, Indiana, near Marion, where he grew up on a small farm with his father James William Davis, mother Anna Catherine (Carter) Davis, brother Dave, and 25 cats. Davis' childhood on a farm parallels the life of his cartoon character Garfield's owner, Jon Arbuckle, who was also raised on a farm with his parents and a brother, Doc Boy. Jon, too, is a cartoonist, and also celebrates his birthday on July 28. Davis attended Ball State University. While attending Ball State, he became a member of the Theta Xi fraternity. He earned the dubious honor of earning one of the lowest cumulative grade point averages in the history of the university, an honor incidentally shared with Late Show host David Letterman.

Davis as of 2007 resides in Muncie, Indiana, where he and his staff produce Garfield under his company, Paws, Inc., begun in 1981. He was married to Carolyn, a singer and elementary teacher whom he met while both were attending college, and has a son named James with her. However, the couple divorced, and Davis since 2000 has been married to Jill, Paws' senior vice president of licensing, who has worked there approximately 25 years.

Ironically, Davis did not own cats when he started Garfield because of Carolyn's allergies, but they owned a Labrador retriever named Molly. With Jill, the family has expanded to include children Ashley and Chris; three grandchildren, Chloe, Carly and Cody; cats, Spunky and Nermal; and a dog, Pooky.

At Least Several Tons of Fun

This is one of those books that can be described as a laugh a minute. In fact, a laugh a second is likely more accurate. Another excellent Garfield book.

The one where Garfield has a bow and arrow and Odie pops bread out of the toaster for him to shoot, Garfield and Odie outfish Jon, and Jon takes Garfield and Odie on a vacation to Guano Guano.

Garfield: Tons of Fun wasn't tons of fun, but it was entertaining. I quite enjoyed the long storyline about their vacation to Guano-Guano Island, but felt that it ended abruptly and they were magically transported back home without mention of the plane ride or anything. They were still there on Sunday, and on Monday they were back home and Jon was excited for spring time. Where is the closure? At least a mention of the fact that vacation was over would have been nice.

I am always entertained by the Garfield collection books, but I have to say, as I have said before, that I would like to see more main characters added. I am reading a Peanuts collection book right now, and I like that Charles M. Schulz has so many characters he can turn to. Even Calvin & Hobbes had more main characters than Garfield, and so did Bloom County. At least make Odie have thought bubbles. Oh well, my pleas always seem to fall upon deaf ears.

Overall, Garfield: Tons of Fun is another pleasurable book filled with the antics of America's favorite cat, Garfield. Is it laugh out loud funny? No. Does it keep you amused? Yes. I have really liked Garfield for many years and know that it is still being produced today. It is hard to believe that there are another 30 books or so that I haven't read yet. The fact that Jim Davis has not given up on Garfield proves that he has an endless imagination. Maybe that is why Garfield is just as popular today as he was over 30 years ago. Amazing.

Sometimes I regret having introduced Mini-Me to Garfield and Friends. The show is kid-friendly, but I had forgotten the books have some jokes that require adult context. A joke about a foreign delicacy required more explanation than it was worth. And there were a few strips I couldn't help snorting at, but then refused to read aloud.

Still, the sight gags are great, and the Pooky strips in this book are downright adorable. Both things Mini-Me loves. And it was kinda fun for me to read a new Garfield book again.

Reading this book as an adult, I would give it between a two and a three; when I was nine I would have given it a four or a five.

Hilarious!

Funny, the illustrations are so comical! Haven't found a Garfield I didn't enjoy. Set and ready to get the next in the series.
