Rate this book
Bundle of Trouble Vol 8 is a trade compilation of Knights of the Dinner Table issues 22-24 with extra features including the conclusion of the Bag Wars saga with "The Share Giver" and "Dark Side of the Bag". Knights of the Dinner Table is the longest running comic on the subject of games ever! Though B.A., Brian, Bob, Dave and Sara may play different characters in different games, their personalities always shine through. KoDT also features articles for gamers from a gamer's perspective. A hilarious and hysterical slice of (fantasy) life in strips and a wonderful celebration of the gaming culture.

I didn't realize that the Knights of the Dinner Table Bundle of Trouble books were listed on Goodreads. I remember searching years ago, and not finding any. That seemed fair enough. They were more comics than books after all, available in specialty shops, but not in the graphic novel section of your average book store. Time passed, and I got a hankering to haul out all my Knights back issues and reread them. I alternated between the comics and the books I review on Goodreads.

When the time came to read Bundle of Trouble Volume Eight, I noticed that it was the first of the series to sport a barcode and ISBN on the back cover. So I figured I'd look it up on Goodreads, just for the heck of it. Imagine my surprise to find that, not only was it listed, but so were the previous seven volumes. If I’d known that, I would have been reviewing them all along. I think I’ll hold off on reviewing 1-7 until some future date when I reread them again.

Meanwhile, I suppose I should review Volume Eight …

I’ve been a fan of the Knights of the Dinner Table for a long time, since discovering issue 14 at a gaming convention in the mid-90’s. Being both a gamer and a comics fan, it was right up my alley. The Knights are a group of gamers and the comics are about their weekly sessions. It's pretty much all talking heads with art that is crude at best. But the writing is strong enough to carry everything marvelously well. These are strong, fully-realized characters who bicker back and forth. I’ve played enough role playing games over the years to recognize myself and my friends in them.

Even if you're familiar with the original comics, the Bundles of Trouble are worth reading as they typically include about twenty pages of brand-new material--in the case of this volume, the conclusion of the Bag World storyline that's been running through the last few Bundle volumes. On the downside, the Bundles do not reprint any of the non-comics material from each issue, which is often quite substantial. Part of what kept me buying the comics for so long--about a hundred issues, if I recall correctly--was how much bang I got for my buck with each one: game reviews, Jolly’s editorials, assorted panel cartoons and humor pieces, the letters from readers …

It's really impossible for me to be objective about these books. They're near and dear to my heart. Yes, the art is decidedly not great, but the writing, the characters, the banter … Definitely recommended if you're a gamer, and possibly worth investigating even if you aren't.

I have now read seven Bundle of Trouble -collections in a row and it is getting a bit repetitive. Unfortunately The Bag Wars storyline included quite a lot filler stuff and the ending could have been a better one.

But, I’ll still carry on reading these bundles...
