Just because Quanta can see the future doesn’t mean she can change it. She’s spent most of her life imprisoned, feeding her captors information to keep herself alive, but she’s finally reached the endgame and her death creeps closer by the moment.

The son of two senators, Altair Orpheus leads a life of privilege that provides the perfect cover for his side job: working with the rebel Shadow Ravens to undermine the ruling Seligo government. Everything is running like clockwork until he crosses paths with Quanta. As he watches her deftly maneuver through life in a perverse prison, his plastic heart melts. A jailbreak would be suicide, but Tair is willing to sacrifice everything to give her a chance at happiness.

Now Quanta senses a terrifying new future brewing. She and Tair are bound together, but every image of them kissing, snuggling, and acting knee-weakeningly happy is balanced by a much darker possibility. They’ll be picture perfect together, but only until time rips them apart. How can she follow her heart when she’s seen how their love plays out?

Quanta is book two in the Shadow Ravens series by Lola Dodge and Aileen Erin. This book was generously provided to me in exchange for an honest review by NetGalley, Inscribe Digital and by the authors.

This book was one crazy ride. Altair Orpheus is the son of a prominent Senator who has high aspirations for his son. At a young age, though, Altair, or Tair, became disillusioned with his life. He lives in a society that your status is determined by the tattoo you wear. There is a secret rebel society of Shadow Ravens, only obvious to fellow Shadow Ravens by the raven tattoo on their wrist. Tair has been leading a double life, secretly a member of the Shadow Ravens but leading the life of a privileged Senator’s son in order to get and pass along important information.

raven clip art:

Quanta wears a Red Helix tattoo. All ‘Reds’ are considered dangerous, they have special powers difficult to control. They are usually just murdered. Quanta’s gift, though, is that she is a seer. She can either look back or to the future. She has been held for ten long years in the labs under the Senate building, studied, experimented on, and used for her sight. Most on the outside believed that she was dead. I want to take a moment here to pause and say how awesome and strong Quanta is. I believe she is about twenty by now. Did she ever break or give in to what she was subjected to? No! She remained strong and manipulated things to the best of her ability to keep those on the outside safe. This young woman amazed me to no end with her strength and resilience.

“The Seligo had tried to strip her bare, but at her core, Quanta was still Quanta, and she hadn’t been broken by her past.”

lab:

When Tair is asked by the head scientist, Dr. Nagi, to assist him with a top secret experiment, he thinks this is the perfect opportunity to finally get into the inner workings to get more information for the Ravens. But he had no idea that his life was about to change forever. As soon as he laid eyes on Quanta, he knew his life was no longer his own.

Tair knew he had to try to get Quanta out, but with layers upon layers of security, and Quanta was observed every minute of every day through cameras and two way mirrors. How could they ever escape?

 photo 10338061_zpsf17mucvb.gif

As Tair and Quanta spend time together, they realize their bond is not a normal one. All Quanta has to do is touch Tair and she feels calmer. The images constantly playing through her head quiet. Along with this bond come abilities Quanta didn’t realize she possessed. Abilities that might be helpful in their escape.

time going backwards

This book was a crazy ride and kept me on edge right up to the very end. There isn’t really a cliff hanger but there is still much to be resolved. We also get to know Tair’s sister, Cassie, and I loved her. I’m hoping in the next book we get to find out more about her. There is quite a wait for the next book in this series, Quanta Reset, which will be a continuation of Tair and Quanta’s story. I think you could enjoy this book even if you haven’t read the first one, but the characters of the first book do re-appear in this one. The first book in the series, though, Cipher, is also amazing so you really don’t want to miss it. So start at the beginning, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Age Rating: Swearing, implication of rape and torture. (We know it happened even though it happens off screen.)

The Good:

I liked how Quanta saw the future and the past. I've never read anything like it! She sees time ghosts, people in the space she's in or connected to an object or person. Sometimes it was jarring having her visions in present tense and the rest in past, but that might have been the point. A lot of thought went into her powers.

We get to see how the elite live through Altair. They were as vain as expected. But some of their kids aren't as stuck up. Altair's crazy gamer sister was a great character! Not that the other characters weren't good, but there wasn't much opportunity for levity.

The Bad:

Like Cypher, the main characters in Quanta were 'magically' linked. Paired. Destined. Whatever. She requires him to have control of her powers. I didn't like it in the first book and I don't like it here. This one is a little better, but I still wish it was just a coincidence that he has this effect on her, or their feelings allowed this connection. And I don't like that Lady Eva scientifically paired them together. Talk about controlling. Plus it spoils the romance!

Although stuff happens, the plot was rather slow for me. They spend the whole book not escaping from the lab. I also didn't like the way Quanta's powers grew. (Plot wise I mean.) It's been done before and this book had the potential for more. (Sorry spoiler avoiding)

Even though this is the second book, it features a new story and all new characters. Does it stand alone? Mostly. Quanta didn't do as good a job explaining the world and since I remembered little from Cypher, I was rather confused by all of the terms.

The Stuff I forgot:

In a world where people have scientifically altered DNA the color or your Helix tattoo reveals what you can do. White Helix, also known as the Seligo are the elite. They don’t get sick and they don’t age. Black Helix are warriors with superior strength and stamina, greens have super smarts, blues are mysterious, but have some sort of mind control abilities. Then there’s the red helix, which are said to have unstable DNA. They have out of control powers and are to be captured or killed on sight. The Shadow Ravens are working against the government to free the red helix and protect them.

Point of View: First (Quanta & Altair)

Predictability: 4 out of 5 (Where 1 is totally unpredictable and 5 is I knew what was going to happen way ahead of time.)

I kindly received this ARC from INscribe Digital via NG in return for an honest review!

"I'd been born a Red Helix, but I'd chosen to be a Shadow Raven. A rebel, fighting against Doctor Nagi, his immortal Seligo, and everything they stood for. Usually."

Rating: 3.5 quantum stars.

Confession time! I actually didn't realize that this was book 2 of the shadow ravens series. Book #1 is Cipher (The Shadow Ravens #1) However, jumping straight into book 2 didn't ruin anything for me, the author made it really easy to follow. I would even say this could be read as a standalone but trust me when you finish it, you'll totally backtrack to book #1- I certainly will!

I really liked this book, it was very enjoyable, the world- building is awesome too!

Let's jump straight into the plot.

"If pacing were a sport, I'd definitely be the world champion now. Too bad the whole being prisoner thing knocked me out of running for medals."

Quanta has been imprisoned for as long as she's known.
She is one of the most powerful, but also unstable Red Helixs- She's a seer, able to see the timeghosts of the past and the present.
She's been used and abused by scientists and nothing, not one thing can surprise her.
Until Altair Orpheus.
The green Helix- son of a politician and rebel by night.
she didn't see him coming but when he does,
everything changes.
Hope is a fickle thing,
especially when your life is on the line at every moment of everyday.

This book was so well written and engaging! I loved it.

Quanta is an immensely likable character with gumption and strength on the side.
This story is so complex and I can't even begin to start thinking about what it would feel like to live with her gift, i think I'd hate it.
But she does not conform, not matter how much pain comes about she fights to protect the cause she so believes.

She's also hilarious, so many intense scenes and then she'd say something that would make me burst out laughing.

Altair is such a cool character too, he's not dark and brooding, he's had a lot of loss and pain in his life but he doesn't let it define him. He's prepared to give up anything to stop injustice and once he meets Quanta, nothing will be able to stop him.

But seriously, I hated Altair's parents soo much , they're awful!! my goodness!

I do love his sister though, Cass is amazing, I hope we see much more of her in the next book.

This book is just so darned complex! The subservience, the slavery and the near royalties- The seligo. Its crazy!

And *shudders* Darren...if ever there was a way to describe it, Quanta nailed it, he's most definitely a "Son of a seabiscuit" . What. A. Creep. yuck, yuck, yuck!

So yes, I can't wait for the next book!

Stay awesome my lovelies!

"One way or another, Altair Orpheus was going to destroy me."

Quanta was absolutely amazing! Filled with lots of action, great characters and a fantastic romance.

A prisoner, used for her gift of seeing the future. Quanta has no hopes of ever getting out alive. Until Altair Orpheus, a geneticist joins the team of researchers assignment to Quanta. Quanta can't see anything about the boy's past or future, until they touch. With a rush of emotions, Quanta gains new powers with Tair around, as well as a glimpse of their romantic future together.. that is, if they can get out alive.

I am already obsessed with this series, I thought Cipher was amazing but this book was even better. The author really impressed me, I've read books in the past about time travel where the character returns to the same(ish) spot and it just felt very repetitive and boring, but Lola Dodge managed to make every time interesting and action packed.

The pace of this book is very slow at first but at about 50% in is where the action starts to take place. From there, the plot really picks up, and I could not put the book down without finishing it.

I am absolutely in love with Quanta's character. She is so smart and brave. Absolutely everything she does is logical, she takes her time to glance into the futures and pasts to sort out what she needs to do to ensure she's on the right path.

The relationship between the two characters was fantastic to read about. While I'm not a fan of insta-love, the chemistry between these characters was brilliant. Quanta knew they were matched and will most likely end up together but she still tried her hardest not to fall in love, and when it was inevitable she tried to save him from her.

I love everything about this book, if the beginning was a bit more action packed I would have given this book 5 stars, but it was very close. I can't wait to see what happens to Quanta and Tair next.

Happy Reading,

I was beyond excited to receive and ARC for review, already had it pre-ordered but getting it early just means I can enjoy it that much sooner. And enjoy it I did.

Rating: 5 Cupcakes

Quanta is the second book in The Shadow Ravens series, this book is written by Lola Dodge. Now you can read it alone, the story holds it's own but it will have some spoilers of things mentioned that happened in book one, Cipher. So be warned there. That's it. Same world but this time we follow the path of another red, Quanta. She is a captive. She has a very rare and unique red power, the power to see into the past and different possible futures. It's dual prospective, so we also see things from Altair, a Shadow Raven himself but one that is on the fast track to becoming Seligo, the immortal elite, born to be perfect but a prisoner in his own life as well. When they meet it hits the fan and things start moving.

There isn't a dull moment in this book. I couldn’t put it down. I got so mad when people interrupted me from reading, having to remind myself I was at work so I couldn’t ignore them or yell at them, but still. It was amazing. I loved Quanta from the first moment. What she is living with, a test subject trying to use her gift to protect those she can while also trying to protect herself from losing what little control she has of her life. She is a lab rat and never seeing a positive future for yourself only ones with less pain would drive anyone insane. And Altair, he is somewhat of a know it all, but one you like. He kind of reminded me of Sherlock and House in a way, knowing everyone is out for something and noticing things others wouldn’t catch to use to his advantage. He is also completely focused on is work. He doesn't like the way things are and only plays along to keep up appearances for a bigger purpose. Constantly being watched and told how to behave to advance while others plan out your life, he has only slightly more control over his life than Quanta.

These two meeting was priceless. Her visions of him, of them, would distract the most strong willed person. Quanta has some hilarious lines that made me snort while reading. Priceless. I was stuck between understanding her reasons and wanting to strangle her when she made some decisions, as is par for most books. Images of them happy and in love kissing and snuggling, hopeful followed up by images of pain and loss and death are hard to sort. The happiness is so easy to want given her life but when the happiness seems tainted with blood, pain, and heartache is it worth it? Altair knows they are bound and he has to free her, not just because he feels it is right but somehow they have found a way to use her skills to hurt the shadow ravens. Neither of them will stand for that.

Quanta is also full of action. You have corporate espionage type thing going on, all 007 like working for shadow ravens and gun fights, chases, and more. There was always something happening be it action or with the characters that you wanted to keep going. Also it's hard to have covert conversations when your every move is monitored. I highly recommend this book! If that wasn't clear enough already.

NetGalley. Thanks for the copy.

Remember video games? Super Mario and all of that? When a person reaches a level but fail to get through it, they can always go back to a certain checkpoint. Well, the book is sort of like that. It is complicated, and it involves precognition, time traveling, and romance. Also, we have Quanta, the trapped but also brave heroine, who is firstmost trying to survive and then trying to escape her captors once she meets Altair Orpheus.

The main character and one of the two narrators, Quanta is able to see the future. It is both a curse and a gift. It is the power that keeps her alive, but for how long? Well, theoretically, she will be able to foresee her death (and that is really creepy). But of course, the future is much more complicated than that. Quanta is impressive, and she really is a strong character (with hidden motivations that will be revealed along with the unfolding of her backstory).

The other narrator, Altair Orpheus' character traits isn't as clear as Quanta's. It is slowly unravel, and his motivations are very straightforward (unlike Quanta's). But I like him as a love interest. He is brave, and he cares very much for Quanta. (Of course, it may be genetics, but let's not get into that. It is a debate for another day.)

The descriptions of Quanta seeing into the future/the past is really awesome. Kudos to that.

The plot goes off very quickly, and I'm easily drawn into the story. I love watching Quanta trying to understand Altair. Their relationship is definitely dynamic to watch (and her predictions of the two of them in awkward places are amusing).

The world building is easy to understand. Just think of Quanta's world as a Dystopia that wants to control everything by seeing the future and the past. It is exactly as creepy as it sounds, and it doesn't get any better.

Overall, Quanta is an entertaining novel. It can be read as a standalone, and I find the plot to be engaging. I don't have a lot of empathy towards the characters, but I do find the world very, very, very frightening to live in.

Rating: Three out of Five

I received an ARC through NetGalley.

Quanta was kind of crazy! I totally did not expect most of that to go down. For the past ten years, Quanta has been a prisoner and lab rat. She's a Red Helix with the very rare gift of clairvoyance. She can see the past and future after glimpsing the "timeghost" of a person, place, or thing. This makes her a very powerful asset to those who wish to take down the Shadow Ravens, as she spent ten years with them as well. Too bad that Quanta isn't going to give up information that easily, but once a new guy appears in the lab, her powers take an interesting (and deadly) turn.

I really enjoyed Quanta, especially how the namesake's ability worked. She isn't all powerful or all knowing. Like I said, she needs something to prompt her visions. But even then, whether she sees forward or backward isn't always up to her. And while the past is set in stone, the future isn't, so she sees all kinds of possible futures--some more clear than others. Of course, meeting the mysterious new guy, Altair, changes her ability in a big way. I won't tell you what, but it's pretty intense and leads to a lot of action and danger!

There isn't as much romance in Quanta as there was in Cipher, but I'm okay with that because there's more coming! Quanta and Altair had more to think about than kissing. Death is a very real possibility for both of them as he tries to break her out of her lab-prison. Even though Quanta can see the future, that doesn't really help them escape. It just shows them what's possible and what's not. It's like a map of sorts. Most of the book takes place on the same day, because of reasons!

Quanta was really great. It kept me furiously flipping pages to see what would come next, and while it left me with a happy ending, there's obviously more to come. Not everything is resolved! There are bad people lurking around!

Quanta is book two in The Shadow Ravens series. Our leading lady is Quanta, a Red Helix, a person with powers that according to the government shouldn't be alive. She's been imprisoned for years by them, and is constantly getting tested in attempts to duplicate her abilities. You see, Quanta is able to see into the future, including all of the possible outcomes that comes with free will. To keep herself alive she's feeding the Seligo as little information as possible so she's deemed still useful to their cause. What they're currently using Quanta for is to hunt down the other Reds, and anyone that is part of the Shadow Ravens. The Shadow Ravens are a rebel group that is determined to overthrow the Seligo government.

Altair (aka Tair) Orpheus is a scientist that happens to secretly be a member of the Shadow Ravens. He's welcomed into the fold and assigned to Quanta. His Shadow Raven's mission is to play the part and figure out how to save Quanta. What neither he nor Quanta expected was the growing relationship that forms between them in such a dire situation. With no privacy, and a crazy guard dog of a scientist after Quanta I didn't see how they would be able to escape unscathed.

Quanta is a fast paced, engaging read that I couldn't put down. My favorite character was Quanta, she somehow kept herself sane with that power and being imprisoned. She knew what buttons to push to get her way depending on who was in the room, which I found entertaining. She's a strong character, that I can't wait to see more of in the future. All in all I really enjoyed Quanta, and suggest the series if you're looking for a bit of sci fi + romance.

Quanta was an adult book trying to be young adult. Or maybe it was the other way around...

Quanta can see the future. She has been stuck in a lab for seven years under constant intrusive monitoring and testing. She has been tortured, raped, and manipulated by the scientists to extract the information that they want from her. She has been forced to defend herself with the only weapon she has: her ability.

The horrors don't end there.

The characters and plot had a great deal of potential but they were never fully developed. Quanta's trauma was downplayed to make the story more YA appropriate but this ended up imposing a limitation on character development.

I really enjoyed Quanta, by Lola Dodge. I only saw the first two sentences of the description on NetGalley, and added it to my TBR pile. The writing is tense, and the action fast-paced. I wasn’t aware from the description that this was the second book in a series, but at no time did I feel I couldn’t follow the story. I read the whole book in about six hours. There is a sadistic lab researcher that is Snidely Whiplash-level clichéd, but the rest of the characters are well drawn, and their motivations and personalities are evident. I look forward to reading a book three if the author is so inclined. Five stars, read this right now!

This is the second book in a series, but can be read as a stand alone.

The story is just so wild and crazy, completely unpredictable, completely spellbinding. I was trying to keep up to the action, while at the same time trying to read faster and find out what happens next.

Totally unique story and characters, unlike anything I've ever read. And I can't describe it in any other way than spellbinding. amazing!

6/45 books read in 2017.

This second book of the series had all the success ingredients (romance, technology, smarts, & badassery) and it also had me sitting on the edge of my seat. It has some twists and turns which made it nail biting at times. I read it in one night (granted I couldn't sleep because of my throat), so it was definitely good. Shadow Ravens #3, here I come!! :)

Quanta was absolutely amazing! Like Cipher, the first book, this second novel in the Shadow Raven's series has great characters and a superb story line.
Quanta's a prisoner kidnapped at an early age from the Shadow Raven's secret headquarters. She's used for her gift of seeing the future. Quanta has no hopes of ever getting out alive. Until Altair Orpheus, a geneticist joins the team of researchers assigned to Quanta. Quanta can't see anything about the boy's past or future, until they touch. With a rush of emotions, Quanta gains new powers with Tair around, as well as a glimpse of their romantic future together.. that is, if they can get out alive.

I was certainly hooked with Cipher and now I'm obsessed with this series, I thought Cipher was amazing but this book was even better. The author really impressed me with Quanta. It's non stop action with such a fascinating storyline. I've read other stories involving time travel but this was such an interesting twist. Initially, the pace of this book is slow while the background story is established but then it picks up and takes off from there to where you are wondering if either Quanta and Tair will make it out alive.

I am absolutely in love with Quanta's character. Despite the way she's been treated with a fair amount of torture and abuse, she comes out as both smart and brave. Absolutely everything she does is logical. She takes her time to glance into the futures and past events, selecting what she thinks she needs to do to ensure she's on the right path.

I loved the bonding between the two character where the chemistry between Quanta and Tair was brilliant although both of them both tried their hardest not to fall in love, and when it was obviously inevitable,Quanta tried to save him from her.

I loved this book but couldn't quite give it a five star rating. I've got the next book in the series and I can't wait to see what happens to Quanta and Tair next.

Quanta is the second book in the multi author series, the Shadow Ravens. In first book, Cipher, we're introduced into a genetically manipulated world, where intelligence, ruthlessness, and power form a tiered helix society. The unmarked are the lowest of the low and the immortal, genetically perfected Seligo on top. Money, power, and helix sets your place in society. With one exception, red helix. Those born with innate powers, systematically hunted and killed by the Seligo. The Shadow Ravens are a group that fights against the Seligo, in the hopes of making a better world, one where red helixes can live.

Red helixes spend their lives on the run, fighting and hiding to survive. But Quanta, a red helix with a unique ability to see the past and the future, was hunted and captured as a child. Force to live her life in captivity, tortured, tested, and used for her ability, she does her best to protect the shadow ravens she loved as a child. The shadow ravens think Quanta is dead, until one under cover raven is chosen as a new lab worker for the powerful (and deadly) Doctor Nagi—genetic specialist. Altair was born to two senators, both part of the powerful Seligo. Unfortunately, he has no interest in his parents ambitions, but he does have a stake in the shadow ravens taking down the Seligo. Following his path of scientific study aligns him with both his parents and the shadow ravens need for a Seligo infiltration. Bringing Quanta and Altair into alignment, causing a ripple through space and time that they may not be able to survive.

Quanta is a perfect compliment to Cipher and I'm excited to read more!

I hadn't planned to read the other Shadow Ravens books because they weren't by Aileen Erin and they weren't centered on Cipher. I'm so happy I read Quanta! The whole book was really great and I'm totally going to read books 3+4. Because Cipher isn't in the rest of the series, I keep wanting to say that THIS is book one.

Quanta was great because we got a better look at all the futuristic technology. Ordering babies from a catalog? Glowing green and yellow eyes? Crazy!!! I also liked the connection between between Quanta and Altair. And the part where they mixed Cipher in? FANTASTIC!!! I can't wait to read more about Quanta!

This is a futuristic/fantasy novel. It is about a seer w/ extraordinary ability who has been held captive by an elite part of the gov't---used for experiments and information. An undercover agent for the resistance comes to work at her facility and he is shocked to find out that she is still alive. Then thee mayhem ensues. This novel had a great premise, creative plot, greats twist, and characters that were developed and had a good story arc. Every time I thought I knew where the story was going the author threw in a very unexpected twist--but always believable w/in the 'world rule' of this story.

An enthralling sci-fi dystopia about a world with modified genetics and a girl who can see the future--or rather future possibilities, for which she's highly coveted by the corrupt goverment and equally the rebellion. But first she has to break out of the government labs slash torture chambers and to do that she needs the help of a guy on the inside. This story is unique, exciting, tragic and haunting but also romantic. An easy YA read, in a fascinating sci-fi world. It follows perfectly from Cipher and I look forward to more.

I really liked Book 1 of the Shadow Ravens so I thought I'd continue the series.

I was disappointed. I stopped reading several times so I had to really push through. The characters are flat, especially the villains. The only way to explain the villains is madness. That's inadequate for me. The instant attraction is explained by messing around with DNA which is a weak explanation. Basically, the guy ends up being 100% devoted to the girl.

All in all, I was bored. I don't know that I'm going to continue the series.

It was ok.

First book in series, Cipher was a much different book than Quanta. Cipher and Quanta are Red Helix. They are both Shadow Ravens, and they both need saved. Cipher was much lighter in content and a fun little read. Quanta is much darker in the majority of the story. My heart broke for her. The despair was palpable.
I am done with this series.

What an amazing story. One of the few cases where the second is better than the first. Lola Dodge did a great job telling the future through a clairvoyant yet keeping you guessing along the way. I really liked the way the characters from the first book, Knight and Emma, were brought into Quanta's story. Ready for the next book.

I was very excited to find this series continuing.

With some trepidation (wasn't expecting different Author's) I started reading. I found this story fit right along "The Shadow Ravens" world. Every bit as exciting to read. Drew me right along with the new view point. Excited to read more of this compilation of stories.

3.5.

Really loved parts and the ideas behind it like replaying time loops over and over and genetics and the tiny bits of memory but there was just something lacking a little bit, don't know what though. Don't love it as much as I wanted to. But still very good and will read the rest I believe.

A fun drift from reality, I enjoyed reading it. Good job by Lola Dodge.

Personal note: It was more than just okay. I enjoyed it, but not enough to read again. 3.5 stars so I rounded up.
