Young orphan Billy Harper dreams of the day when he can enlist in the Union navy. In March 1862 he manages to stow away in the new ironclad Monitor and participates in its historic clash with the Confederate ironclad Merrimack. This book for juvenile readers also includes a bit of espionage, as Billy tries to stop a Confederate spy from sabotaging the Monitor.

About the author

Irving Werstein was born in Brooklyn, graduated from high school in Richmond Hill, Long Island, and attended New York University. His early career was colorful and varied. It range from working in a radio factory to repairing dolls in a doll hospital. He was a summer comedian in the Catskills, a salesman, a camp counsellor, a straight actor.

But ever since he helped edit his high school newspaper, Irving Werstein wanted to write. He sold his first story in 1938. While serving in an infantry regiment from 1941-1945, he also worked as staff correspondent for Yank. His published work includes numerous magazine stories, television and radio scripts, and an impressive list of books for young adults.

Irving lived abroad in England, Mexico, and Italy until settling in New York City with his wife Goldie and his son Jack, adopted from Belgium. Irving died in 1971.
