The one thing he could do for her was let her go. Until he couldn’t.

When Thieves’ guitarist Shane Jones lost his close friend to a freak accident, Krista Conner helped him through the worst of his grief. He kept their late-night trysts a secret to protect her from the tabloids, and when she broke up with him, he let her go.

But he never got over her.

Months later, his world is rocked again by the death of his brother mere weeks before the biggest Thieves album yet. Grieving and desperate for peace, he tracks Krista down, craving the salvation he found in her sweet spirit. Only this time, he’s determined not to leave.

Krista left Shane because her life was a mess. She’s rebuilt it, piece by challenging piece, making some hard decisions along the way. She’s settled into a new city and a new life, and for the first time in a long time, she’s content and happy. Then Shane turns up, promising to stay, promising to care. Promising everything.

Shane’s the one she wants, but the toughest choice she made could drive him away for good.

This space says "biography", but...no. Goodreads is my reader space (even though that little thingy up on the right says Goodreads Author). So, if you're a reader, send me a friend request, but you better have more books on your list than friends. My TBR pile is never big enough and I'm always looking to add to it.

I'll read pretty much everything except horror. I write romance, so I read a lot of it - I insist it must have a plot! I need plot with my smut! Also mystery/thrillers (preferably with lots of mindf*ckery going on), fantasy, even literary fiction and the occasional non-fiction book (if you haven't read Adrian Nicole LeBlanc's RANDOM FAMILY, do. It's brilliant and heartbreaking.)

Talk to me about what you're reading!

(I have now hit my limit for exclamation points.)

With just the mention of “rock star” in the book’s description will get me to put in first place on my TBR list. So when I see that this book had my “rock star” mandate I was ready for a book about hot guys, groupies, sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll. I had no idea how this book would make me actually “feel” on some pretty tough topics.

Shane was the lead singer for Thieves and he has had some pretty rough times to deal with as of late. First, his friend dies in an accident so he has to deal with that while his brother, Eric is on a self-destruct mode. Eric was a crazy good drummer for Thieves but he also had his demons to deal with namely in the form of drug addiction. It was no surprise that Shane walked into Eric’s room and found him with the needle still sticking out of his arm and it didn’t matter what Shane did Eric was dead. This was death number 2 in a very short time. Shane deals with it the only way he knows how…he has Krista who can make him forget if only for a little while. The sex was great but it was all that they had at first because even as their feelings were growing for each other, Krista could not deal with Shane not committing to anything more and Shane didn’t know how to speak up and let her know that she was more than a f**k buddy.

Krista had a hard life as well with having a mother who was hooked on pain killers while she was growing up which made for a very dysfunctional family. Then as can happen her brother Riley has to fight the downward spiral of drug addiction as well. Krista was always there to help the others in her life and didn’t know how to ask for help in doing this. She was hoping that just maybe Shane would have been that person for her to be able to go to but when he wouldn’t commit to anything more she left LA and moved to Portland. She was free lancing as a web designer and trying to make a life for herself not expecting that a few months later Shane would be standing at her door yet again looking for solace.

Were Shane and Krista able to build a relationship to become something more than just sex and would they be able to admit it to one another that they did have actual deep feelings for each other? Since their relationship was built on shaky ground what would happen when Krista dropped a big bombshell on Shane? Was he was to understand her past actions or would it be too much for him to get over? Ms. Byrne took you through some very dramatic times that left you feeling as if you were on a rollercoaster because your heart would be breaking one minute and then she would let you feel that little sliver of hope. She also had you dealing with some pretty heavy topics in today’s world and possibly opened some doors as to what your views are on some issues. Well done!

Broken Down is about pain, loss, and new beginnings.

At the beginning of the book we get to meet Shane Jones, Thieves' guitarist, whose recent accidents have completely changed his life. After the passing of his friend/band mate and brother, Shane doesn't know what else to do with his life. Ever since his friend died in an accident he would always turn to his friend with benefits, Krista Conner. Their connection is what helped him when he was going through some rough times. Yet, even though their sex life was great, he knew that he wasn't ready for a real relationship like Krista was. So they parted ways, but as the fame started to grow for his band, the pressure ended up killing his brother. Now Shane is ready to make a change in his life, and he wants Krista in it for the long run. As he sets on to go to Portland for a few weeks, his mission is to make Krista understand that he is willing to give them a shot at a real relationship and that he is not going anywhere.

Right when Krista met Shane it was exciting and surreal. He was not only a handsome guy, but he also happened to be in a famous band. When the two became friends things slowly started to change for her. When his friend passed away it changed their relationship, they became friends with benefits, and when she wanted something more out of their relationship, Shane pushed her away. Feeling completely devastated, Krista moves to Portland where she works as a freelance web designer. But just as she was starting to move on, Shane comes back into her life and this time she wants to make sure that her heart is protected or she will never be able to move on from another heartache.

It's evident from the very beginning that both of the characters have struggled to move on in their lives. Not only do they have pasts that have hurt them, but they also have hurt each other when they were together. Shane is not your typical rock star, he doesn't like the media attention and he kind to others. He truly wants to change his life, and he is willing to give anything to get that. On the other hand, Krista has been just as hurt. She has a past that she hasn't really been able to move on from, and when she meets Shane she wants to start a relationship with him. I liked the story, the author did a good job with twists and turns that I was expecting when I was reading the book. There were some scenes that felt unnecessary, but it all ties together in the end. There is character development that changes over the course of the story and as the characters learn to move on we get to meet other secondary characters that made the story that much more interesting to read. Overall, if you're looking for a romance story filled with twists and steamy scenes than I would highly recommend this story. : )

The Story

Shane knows that Krista sent him on his way all those months ago for a reason. He was a jerky during their relationship - if one can call what they had a relationship at all. Shane was too weak to fight for what he wanted with Krista then.

Not anymore. Not after Eric.

Shane won't stand losing Krista too. He wants her, he needs her in order to keep breathing. And he knows she won't refuse to at least help him, so he takes a long shot and appears on her doorstep, in the middle of the night...

.Krista broke up with Shane for a reason. Ok, several reasons, but still: they were just fuck buddies and she fell for him. The rules were simple and she broke then. She had to walk away in order to keep sane. She refuses to allow anyone else to break her again.

Not anymore. Not after Riley and her break down.

Krista is doing her best to move on with her new career and life in Portland, far away from the temptations of Los Angeles. Away from Shane. She just didn't count that the one thing she couldn't have would appear on her door... Just like he always did.

The Analysis
Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader:)

Broken Down is a very well-written book. At first, I was afraid this would be one of those romances full of meaningless porn-like sex with ridiculous existential doubts.

And then I read page one and was hooked.

I fell deeply in love with both James and Krista, they were wonderful protagonists and managed to not irritate me at all! They screw up for sure, but they were so real, their situation so down to earth that my heart was always filled with emotion during the read. I won’t lie, there were some parts in that I couldn’t believe what I was reading and how much of an ass Shane was, but even then, I also could understand a little his side. I didn’t let go of Broken Down until it ended and it is with the deepest pleasure that I announce it a five stars book! ❤

The narrative style is third person, with switching points of view between James and Krista. I loved how Byrne manages to insert us deep within the characters minds without using the first person narrator, IT IS BLACK MAGIC!! =O

This is my favorite narrative style and Byrne’s writing was so powerful and beautiful that I wanted to hug her several times during this book. Also, there were lots of funny moments to harmonize all the drama that James and Krista are going through.

The plot was complex on a simple way, as both Shane and Krista had many pending problems and secrets that they kept from each other. They had to basically come clean and start their relationship over in order to be together and this is so much more easier said than done. Also, there are a couple of twists that simply blew my mind up!

The characters were just awesome. As I said, I fell in love with Krista and James and found myself pinning for them to be together all the time – I usually don’t fangirl about heterosexual couples, which proves the black magic use on Byrne’s part, haha! James only didn’t make it to My Bookish Boyfriends list because his behavior is not quite my style. I prefer my men more open and gentlemen like, haha!

Also, all characters were so real. Their struggles, funny quotes, how they deal with problems… EVERYTHING! I loved it ❤ I’m tempted to give a go to the first book (Hidden Scars) and see how Sara and Taylor really met and got together, as she is the PERFECT best friend, haha! Let’s see if I have an opportunity to read it some time:)

One of the strongest points on Broken Down was how Byrne handled abortion. One of the characters chose to have one and lose her incoming child and defended her choice as the corrected one until the end. Given that:

-> her brother was in a coma due to heroin use;
-> her parents didn’t give a crap for what happened to her brother;
-> her work had given her a nervous breakdown and she had to quit;
-> she was taking anxiety meds
-> most importantly, she had dumped the father of the child before acknowledging the pregnancy (which was result of a bad condom incident) and thought they would never meet again;

I say I’m with her on that. And when the said former boyfriend asked if he didn’t have a say in the abortion, she’s absolute: no, he hadn’t! It was her body, it was her problem! They weren’t together anymore, her life was a mess and both her mind and body couldn’t afford to bring a child to this world. She would have never forgiven herself if she hadn’t stopped the pregnancy. This is such a delicate matter and Byrne just slayed it like a queen. I am so proud of her!

I am most pleased to say that there are three sex scenes in the book and each one important for a reason. No frantic bodies every two pages, no hours reading porn on the reader’s end, not any of the things that usually makes me avoid contemporary romance

His arms came around her, and she smelled sweat and motor oil and the faintest hint of her body wash. She wound her arms around his neck and held on tight.

Tight enough she might not ever let him go.

Disclaimer that I did not read the first book in this series and I really don't feel you have to. I cannot allude to what would be given away if you read them out-of-order, but know that you can absolutely read this as a stand alone and you fucking should.

I stayed up until all hours of the night finishing this book. All hours. I started it for what felt like 8 million times. But alas sleep just kept taking over. Until last night. The night before my review. It was an amazing marathon and I may need loads and loads of cafe bustelo to get through my work day but it was worth it.

This book challenged me. It challenged my emotions and left me feeling bare. Shane and Krista were two incredibly complex characters. This is a romance novel, b

ut yet it is riddled with addiction. It showed the shaky side of the coin, the side that isn't an addict but loves one instead. They put up this bold front and they refuse to let anyone see beyond it. They can't show weakness because they are so busy being strong for the one they love. It tears them apart from the inside out.

Shane and Krista were so busy being broken that they didn't realize what it meant to be whole until it was too late. The communication between them was a major theme throughout the entire novel. They communicated very little with words but their bodies spoke volumes. The chemistry exploded off the page leaving me breathless and blushing at times. I found it comforting that the theme of addiction wove its way into their relationship. They were addicted, but to each other.

He wanted her. Thought he might drive himself mad from wanting her. It was sinful and insidious in the best possible way, how a single sound could make him harder than steel, ready and willing to toss aside his plans for slow and sweet and thorough. Plans he'd tried to implement the last time and failed.

Honestly this novel fucking surprised me. I love when that happens. I really enjoyed the depth and the seriousness of what was happening in the characters lives. This novel was so much more than sex and puppy dog eyes. It was so much more than heartbreak. It was raw and my heart ached with some of the decisions they made.

If you are looking for a deeper novel, one that slices through your veins and leaves you feeling emotionally naked while at the same time putting your heart back together with some medical tape and a melody than this is your next read.

The best second chance romances are always mired in angst and in this tale of a rock star weighted down by grief trying to win back the woman equally bruised by a loved one's addiction, the angst is running high. Readers will be taken on a journey depicting the pain of addiction on an addict's loved ones that's both thought provoking and heartbreaking to make its conclusion all the more satisfying.

Shane's music career is currently flourishing, but after the deaths of one bandmate and recently his brother, the music seems to be lost to him and he's looking for a way out. Whenever he needs comfort he's always thought of Krista so he's once again knocking on her door as he's looking for a safe place to make decisions about his future. He and Krista's past relationship may have been primarily based on sex but he's always felt safe in her presence, comforted, and allowed to be just an average man. The day she told him to go he agreed but he's regretted it ever since and decides to do things right this time by starting over and taking the time to get to really know her. Shane's not an outspoken man and his quietness has led to problems, but he is loyal. He loves Krista and would do anything to make her happy. The decisions he's making now regarding his future express the feelings that he's had trouble speaking in the past and had me liking him despite his stoicism.

Krista is equally as stoic in that she doesn't easily ask for or accept help. Her first instinct is to always help others which has put her physical and mental health in jeopardy repeatedly. Though she loves Shane she never saw a future with him because of his fame. She never gave him the chance to prove her beliefs differently as her faith has been sorely tested by her drug addicted mother and brother over and over again and left her full of doubts. Though she may not express her needs or feelings loudly, I still liked her and her caretaking tendencies as I see myself in that role. Krista was loyal and there when anyone needed her which is an admirable trait and made her easy to relate to.

This was a story with a powerful message about drug addiction and how it affects those around the addict. It's a heartbreaking story at times as it deals with grief and guilt as is vividly depicted by Ms. Byrne. The romance between Shane and Krista may have been scorching the first time around, but here they're wiser and taking things slower to get to know each other better in interludes both sweet and sensual. Unlike many of the rock star romances I've read previously, the music world is on the periphery here with very little of the trappings of fame on display. Along with its likable protagonists comes a small cast of secondary characters who subtly push the main couple together with only Krista's brother Riley having a storyline of his own. His journey though is intensely emotional and one that I'd love to see expanded as we were just getting to know him when this story ended. Though this story does lag a bit in the middle section it's still a compelling read with characters easy to relate to. It's emotionally powerful and thought provoking and I applaud Ms. Byrne for the weighty topics she dealt with here and recommend it to others.

Impossible to put down

I’ve received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
First off, I’d like to say I don’t like reading spoilers so I don’t write them. Also, I don’t see the point in repeating the book’s blurb as it doesn’t add much information to the readers.
It’s been a while since a story had tugged at my heartstrings the way Broken Down did. I must confess at times it felt more like it was ripping my heart out of my chest actually. But I know it was mainly due to the fact the story dealt with issues that are very close to home. Having a nephew struggling with his drug addiction for the longest time, in and out of rehab, and seeing my brother’s family affected by it has given me very personal knowledge of the problems Shane and Krista face. Hats off at Amanda’s portrayal of those issues, by the way. She kept them real. Painfully so. It isn’t an easy topic to write about and she did it extremely well and balancing the emotions so that it was never too depressing. Again, a very thin line to walk and the author managed it brilliantly.
But don’t get me wrong, the story is about second chances, not drug addiction. Also, Broken Down is a character-driven story. Another reason for me to admire her writing abilities since she did a great job fleshing out both the main characters and the supporting ones. She manages to get you inside Krista’s and Shane’s head, which I’ve always preferred to the one-sided POV, thus allowing you to have a more complete picture of their reasons, feelings, doubts, and struggles. Plus, the way she mingles their present-time story with droplets of their past together helps the reader gradually understand their personalities and relationship better. I particularly like the fact Shane isn’t a typical rocker and Krista isn’t a typical damsel in distress. On the contrary. She’s the strong one giving him the stability he craves. Again, on a very personal note, I relate to Krista’s inability to seek help or accept it from others so maybe that’s another reason the book moved me so much. For people like Krista and I, it’s simply NOT easy to ask for help. And Amanda painted a spot-on picture of it. As for the supporting characters, they aren’t there only for show. They all have interesting stories of their own to share with the reader. What else can you ask for in a book right?
Finally, don’t get put off by the “Book 2” idea thinking you won’t get it unless you read the first book because this is a totally stand-alone story. However, after reading Broken Down, I’m dying to download Hidden Scars and start reading Taylor and Sara’s story. LOL

Broken Down,  Amanda K. Byrne

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre:  Romance, General Fiction (adult)

A rock star romance,a weakness for me...so I had to request it ;-)

I really enjoyed this, very full of emotion, flawed people, problems that affect many people and Krista and Shane were such great leads. They’d had a past sort-of romance, but it was all very quiet, Shane thinking he was keeping Krista safe from the paps, Krista feeling she was just a friends with benefits person for him. Finally something happens and she stops seeing him.

Now its a few months later, and he’s just been through the death of his brother from drugs, the band is rocked by the loss of a key member, and they’re all taking time out. Shane’s just not certain he wants to continue, music seems to have left him, and before whenever he felt down, felt the need of someone real he’d go to Krista. This time he’s unsure he’ll be welcome, but he needs her so much one night he drops everything and lands on her doorstep in the early hours. . Krista is still in love with him, moved far away to be close to her friends, to try to forget him, or at least get past him and pick up her life, and now he’s there she’s plunged back. She sets rules, friendship only, no sex, she can’t go back down that route, its taken her so long to recover from last time. She’s got her own issues too, with her only brother going through rehab yet again. Shane’s changed though, realised what he lost and is determined to get it back. He hadn’t realised how heartbroken Krista was, even though she instigated their breakup. He works hard at supporting Krista emotionally and physically with her brother, at trying to help her when something happens that leaves him needing her help too. In a way that’s a blessing as it keeps him close to her, gives him an excuse not to go back, and time to try to convince her that he loves her, loved her before and hasn’t stopped. Krista though is hiding a secret that could change his feelings and the need to tell him is wearing her down.

Its a great read, some hot and sensual sex,a good story, and characters and issues that were believable. I really like them both, wanted to shake them at times and say “ just talk, dammit!!” but of course if they did the book would be a lot shorter ;-)
Its a story I enjoyed reading, a good realistic tale that wraps up well. I didn’t feel the drama was sufficient for a five for me, but of course everyone is different and its perfect for other readers.

Stars: Four, a realistic and moving story

Shane and Krista had a good time together in LA when they first met, but he never showed any interest in doing anything with her that involved appearing in public even if it was just to go to the store, making her feel like a dirty secret when his intention was simply to spare her the invasion of privacy sure to come at the hands of the paparazzi. Unfortunately when the time comes, failure to communicate leads to Krista walking away from him and making difficult decisions about her life and future.

Now, months later, Shane is reeling from his brother's death on top of the death of his best friend not too long ago and he is drowning under the constant presence of the cameras outside his home. Missing Krista and realizing what a mistake he made by letting her go, he takes a chance and escapes to Portland where she is now living, hoping she will be his refuge once again until he can find his equilibrium. He isn't sure what her reaction will be when he arrives, but he hopes to convince her that he is genuine in his feelings for her and to give him another chance.

Krista loved Shane but realized his rock star lifestyle didn't leave a place for her in his future. Now she is afraid to hope that he might be serious about leaving the band and starting a life with her because she doesn't think she can stand losing him twice. All her life, no one has ever taken care of her so she is too used to relying only on herself. Now, her brother fights the same demons of addiction that Shane's brother faced, and his uncertain future adds to her stress. Add in the major secret she is keeping from Shane and I had to wonder how long she could last.

Broken Down is filled with tension, hope and second chances, but if you are expecting a typical rock star romance, you will be surprised by what you do receive. This book is about the life of a rock star off the stage, dealing with the stress and temptations of that life, determining how to move on when someone else's addiction rips your life apart, and letting go of secrets and past decisions that cannot be undone in order to build a new future. Although I am not sure I truly understood Krista and her choices, she did what she felt was right for her. My heart broke for Shane as he tried to deal with the grief of the loss of two of the people he was closest to in such a short amount of time only to be blindsided by Krista's revelation too. Through it all, I definitely could not put this story down no matter what emotions were churning so well done Ms. Byrne!

Let me start by saying that I received an advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I should also note that I did not read book one in this series. In my opinion this book could definitely be read as a stand-alone. (To tell you the truth, I haven't even read the synopsis for book 1.)

I enjoyed this book. I always enjoy getting to see how people in other professions live their day to day life - especially if they're someone in the public eye. By the time we meet Shane though, he's making his exit out of the public eye - or at least trying to. So we don't see too much of how he copes with the public or what he does to cope. But I still enjoyed the small glimpse into his rockstar life. I also enjoyed the glimpse I got into Krista's graphic design world.

From the start you can tell that Shane and Krista have a strong emotional connection. You can also see that they're both avoiding getting hurt again by the other. I have to say that both characters frustrated me at times. I felt like telling them to get their words out of their heads and express them verbally to the other. They were both constantly thinking something to themselves and contemplating talking to the other and so often didn't follow through with the actual talk.

There is much going on in this book. There's also some sex. But the book isn't just about the sex. There is a story to be told. Shane and Krista both have issues they have to work through before they can find their happy ending. But they do eventually find their happy ending. I have to say that I was pleased with the fact that the author chose to make the characters go through a normal beginning to a relationship - dating with a kiss goodbye at the door.

We do get an epilogue at the end to see how their relationship is doing. We also get some resolution to the question of whether Shane will stay in the rockstar world or not. However, we still don't know whether he will remain a permanent fixture in the music world or whether he'll do a 180 and refurbish cars. I would have liked to know that. Who knows maybe we'll get to know more in future books in this series.

Overall, it was a good read and I'd definitely recommend this book to romance readers. There are some issues that some readers may be uncomfortable with -- drug use, overdoses, and abortion. So be forewarned.

Not your typical rocker romance, Broken Down by Amanda Byrne is a second-chance-at-love tale that really focuses on character and relationship development.

It is not a fast-paced story, but the characters and the story line are so engaging that I never felt that the story lagged. I really enjoyed the care with which Byrne developed her characters. They’re quite empathetic; you feel the pain and anguish that both Kristi and Shane must deal with. Their longing and regret tugged at my heart.

“Sooner or later, he was going to have to face writing a song without his brother…”

It was fascinating getting a more realistic view of a musician’s life when not on the road. The mundane mixed with managing fans intruding on private moments, and pressure from the label regardless of personal tragedy.

Kristi has had her share of tragedy: friends in harms way, a mother hooked on pain medication, and a brother with a frequent-stay card at the rehab center. Caring too much and too deeply for these people takes her over the edge. She doesn’t rely on anyone when she is in need and that takes a toll on her health and well-being. Shane is needy, but he tries not to demand too much from Kristi. Eventually, he realizes that what he really needs is Kristi in his life, but the feverish pace of their initial relationship has left both scarred. To top it off, they are the world’s worst communicators; the unspoken feelings, needs and plans might get in their way of happiness.

I sort of fell for Shane because of his efforts to make this second chance with Kristi work. He wants to do it right by taking it slow and romancing her. Both Shane and Kristi take a giant leap of faith when they decide to trust the other with their heart.

“I think we figured out we’re stronger together.”

Amanda Bryne is a new author to my list but as soon as I saw it was about a rockstar I was interested in it. The book is about the life a rockstar holds outside of being that. This book was more of dealing with demons and also gives you the feels deep down. She really put the rockstar outside the box. This book is part of a series, but I red it as a standalone.

Shane Jones is the lead singer of a band called the Thieves. He is dealing with sudden death of another band member, whom also happened to be his younger brother, Eric. He takes off and heads to Portland, manly to get away from the constant barrage of paparazzi and fans in his business. He turns to a "friend". This friend is a girl he used to sleep with back in LA and she moved after telling him they couldn't continue what they were doing. Shane uses sex as a way to control his demons he's harboring and he is having a hard time dealing with it all. Shane is trying to figure out a way to stay and leave the band.

Krista is a free lance web designer with a messed past. She too is dealing with a younger brother, Riley who relied on drugs. Her recent move to Portland had a lot to do with getting away from the temptations of Shane but also a secret she has been holding since she left. She is too scared to tell Shane about it and is worried what it will do to him once he finds out.

They become a normal couple, one that starts to open up to each other. They may be having sex but also their lives have become more domesticated. Will Shane return to LA and not return? Can Krista finally open up and trust Shane enough to tell him what she did? Will they have their happy ending or will they part ways?

Amanda writes with a passion of feelings into her characters. She will take you on a roller coaster of wondering what will happen next. She opens your eyes to the seriousness of today's society of drug use. The book was well written.

Why I picked this story up:
I was so intrigued by the excerpt of Hidden Scars, but missed my chance for an ARC of it. Now that I finished Broken Down, I really want to bite myself in the ass...

What I found:

So I skimmed a few other reviews on Goodreads before I started this, and I'm going to echo what stood out from them as well: this is not a fast-paced over-heated rock-star romance. Broken Down is all about calm and solace and second chances.

Shane and Krista started their relationship ass-backwards and had major communication issues to boot, because they are both the brooding type. That does not make for a good foundation, but they do ride on the same wavelength. So if they really started to get to know each other, they'd eventually reach a point where words are absolutely unneccessary. Oh yes, I believe they have this kind of strong connection. They make each other laugh, give strength and peace and understanding. Of course, things don't go smoothly, but I believe the bumpy ride was worth it for them. It sure was emotionally straining.

For me, not so much. I don't know... I liked Shane and Krista, and all the minor characters, but I wasn't gripped by their story. I wasn't glued to the pages with intensive words or feelings or actions, and there wasn't that much sex -- which also wasn't hot by my definition, more medicore -- so I wouldn't go so far to say this was a slow burn, but worth it. I guess I'm a little surprised by how much I enjoyed it although there was nothing that totally struck a cord with me. On the other hand, since this whole book is about finding calm and solace, I want to give major credit to Amanda K. Byrne for getting the undertone done perfectly.

When guitarist Shane crawls back to the one person he knows can't turn him away because she's the nurturing type, never could he imagine that the one perfection in her was also going to be her one major downfall...

Shane and Krista's relationship was one that was defined by sex -- hot and heavy -- and the lack of communication. When they broke things off last time, both were broken, feeling that the other didn't return the same feelings. Krista shoulders pretty much everything -- her life, her friends' lives -- so much so that the one thing Shane ends up needing from her is such a foreign concept, she may just lose him again.

I enjoyed these two and their rocky journey. Many times I wanted to throttle them both for their inability to communicate, but it was the one thing that they needed to learn in order to make them better. I will say, though, that there is a time that Shane makes mention of their communication issues .

At points, I felt the story lacked the get-up-and-go I needed to keep the pages turning -- but then again, the first book in this story had similar moments for me, as well. It may just be a writing style vs. reading style issue. Amanda K. Byrne does, though, continue to prove her talent in character writing and dialogue, my biggest points to look at -- so I'll continue to read!

4 stars

This book is about love, grieving, trust and forgiveness.

I just couldn’t put the book down.
The writing is beautiful, delivering perfectly all the emotions of Krista and Shane.

This journey of recovering the trust and new beginning felt really honest.

Both Krista and Shane learn from their mistakes, their lack of an honest communication, and finally realize they’re better AND STRONGER, AND WHOLE together than apart, accepting they have to be honest, stopping shutting out the other one, and move on from past decisions.

It really felt both realistic and romantic, there is no perfect world here, but the story is still beautiful.

Definitely looking for more about this author.

With her first Book “Hidden Scars” Amanda K. Byrne established a very special “tone” of storytelling, that she effortlessly transferred to the second book of the Hidden Scars series as well.

“Broken Down” is quiet book even when reading in the Blurb about rock stars, the reader will NOT find a fast paced and heavy novel.

The tone is more deep and intense. With a plot filled with well developed characters it is fun to follow the story.

I am really getting to like this authors writing style – very recommendable

I really enjoy Ms Byrne's writing style. Although the two books I have read from her before have had very different settings, one thing remains consistent - the strength of the characters in the story and the depth of emotions evoked by the narrative.

This book is no exception.

This is not a clichéd rock star romance, this is a story of a couple struggling to deal with their personal demons, a story which is dealt with in a manner which makes the characters real and which make the reader care about the outcome.
Although this book, for me, didn't quite reach the same level as book 1, it was very close to it. And I await the author's next release with eager, grabby hands.

Interesting and enjoyable read.
Great characters lots of depth and interesting. It was really engaging to see how they responded as the story moved on. Krista and Shane were warm and easy to like. Good additional characters.

I thought the story line was a bit unusual and one aspect was very brave given the amount of opinions on this topic.
For me the story needed a bit more pace.

Thank you to netgalley for an ARC

Even though the blurb states the book is about the lead singer of a rock band, this book is not about the band.
This is a not a fast paced novel. The characters are well developed and it shows the side of the band world that you don't always see.
The book is intense and deep. Shane and Krista are easy characters to like and it's interesting to see how they develop.
I really enjoyed the book and like the style of writing

I could feel the characters' pain while reading this story. I could also feel the connection the characters had to one another. Unfortunately, I felt like this was just an okay read for me still.

I received a free, advanced copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased review.
