By far this Audible version of, “Koren Talmud Bavli, Vol 20: Sota: Daf Yomi” by Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz is commanding. Delineating the power of worlds that may be birthed from lips (שפתיים). When we consider the Talmud, it is likened to a gate and a wise student makes it an appendage that is with them indefinitely. Though one does not consider how the soul is compromised, defilement emanates from the dead (spiritually/physically).

"...her complexion became like a rose. Caleb became like a father to his wife. Miriam became like two wives. Started sickly and became healthy...”
---Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz

Behavior is a key in the Talmud and those sages (who contributed to the Talmud) give us a tool of measurement to discern a master from slaves. Recognizing light filled vessels becoming the open door beckoning the light in and others who become the darkness, forcing souls into blindness and submission. Remembering “For the Lord your God walks throughout your camp to protect you/deliver your enemies to you.” (Deuteronomy 23:14).

Remembering Miriam and her inspiration via teaching, Moses illuminated by instruction of Torah and Aaron---his servant---honoring him as a high priest (Targum - Micha 6:4). Though slavery was the stone upon the backs of the Jews, Miriam had a secret way of bringing forth fruit. May righteousness go before you and may the light show you the road of a new creation being conceived. Scholarly/felicitous (22 hours on Audible).

Tractate Sotah understandably has a bad reputation; the trial of bitter waters for the woman accused of adultery is blatantly problematic, and the misogyny of ancient Judaism casts its shadow over the whole thing.

BUT -- it's fascinating to see how the Rabbinic Sages are working so hard to try to mediate the misogyny of the Torah introduction of this ritual (in Numbers 5); much like they do with Torah instructions about capital punishment, they place obstacle after obstacle in the way of ever being able to enact this trial, such that the whole discussion is theoretical rather than historical. That doesn't erase the original misogyny, and the Rabbis have plenty of their own misogyny, but it makes for a fascinating read. As just one example, Numbers wants only the adulterous woman to be punished, and the Sages are like, "Not so fast -- she's not committing adultery on her own."

And even when this tractate mostly leaves the subject of the sotah for the last few chapters, it makes for an interesting read. And the last chapter, about how everything is going to hell in a handbasket now that the Temple is destroyed, is alone worth the price of admission.

(My love always to my intrepid Talmud study group; this was our fourth tractate together, reading one daf a week, and next week we dive into Tractate Pesachim.)
