A delayed honeymoon getaway takes a deadly turn for newlyweds Mel and Dana; meanwhile, two meddling mothers won't let sleeping fisherman lie in the latest Morelville Mystery. Does an unsolved shooting death far away from Morelville have local ties? Did a fisherman really drown or was there something more sinister afloat? All Mel and Dana wanted was to enjoy a nice, relaxing honeymoon in the Smokey Mountains, away from the strains of life in the public eye. Instead, they end up involved in a case local law enforcement has completely written off. In this prequel to The Morelville Cozies, things are no better back home where their own mothers are stirring up an all new hornets nest that they think Mel and her own department have written off. If there is going to be any rest for anyone, something is going to have to break in one case or the other... This book is great together with Books 1 through 4 to get all of the Dana and Mel back story but it can also be read as a stand-alone mystery.
Anne Hagan is the author of more than twenty works of fiction in the mystery, romance, and thriller genres. She writes of family, friends, love, murder, and mayhem in no particular order and often all in the same story. She’s a half owner of the weekly discount eBook newsletter, MyQueerSapphFic, the managing director of the non-profit, iReadIndies, a wife, parent, foster parent, and an Army veteran. She draws from all of those experiences when she writes because truth is often stranger than fiction.
Amazing read! Huh? That's it -- way too good and there's not enough stars available for what this 5th series deserve. Really incredible writing and continuous storytelling: lots of plot twists, it's action pact, family drama & dynamics plus there's good intimate moments mixed in. I have this feeling that the author writes from the heart with natural feelings -- each characters are multidimensional and readers will feel their love, their fears & doubts. A highly recommended series!
The unsolved case from the previous book is put on hold while Mel and Dana go off on their honeymoon, where they soon stumble across a new case.
I’m not sure what to make of this book, after the first few chapters Mel and Dana become almost secondary characters, while quite a bit of it is written from Chloe’s (Dana’s Mother) point of view. This was very ‘domestic’, in fact the whole mystery was quite low key. It became fairly clear quite early on where the investigation was going, but I was hoping for a ‘twist’ before the end, but it was all fairly predictable, overall it was just a bit disappointing. I was also expecting some sort of conclusion for the previous cases, but although there was an occasional reference to Olivia Stiers, this case is still left ‘hanging’.
The book was still an enjoyable read, but I would have liked more of Mel and Dana and I thought the ‘mystery’ was quite weak.
SAPPHIC BOOK BINGO: established couple, character with a disability, not a romance, full-time writer, out of your comfort zone; UNICORN: twins, more than 2 POVs (possibly other categories)
Book five was a bit different than usual because neither Mel, nor Dana, got hurt. Plus, their mothers got involved in some sleuthing on their own. The primary MCs went to a cabin in Tennessee for their honeymoon, only to find evidence of an investigation in their rental. They confronted the staff and had their suspicions verified. An accidental murder had been committed there, and it was supposedly ruled as a stray bullet from a hunter. There was other evidence left behind that indicated something different, so Mel had a more exciting honeymoon than they'd planned on having.
The investigation from the previous book, the murder of the woman in her home whose boyfriend was the car mechanic was still unsolved. But another death in Morelville happened: a man was found drowned in a pond while Mel and Dana were in Tennessee. Chloe and Faye, Dana and Mel's mothers, overheard some comments about the man, so they pulled themselves into the town drama, and did some unqualified investigating of what they felt was a murder, and not a drowning.
The remainder of the story won't be revealed in the review. It was a change, and even a bit fun, to have the mothers involved. Their cozy mystery series followed after this book, so I'll be reading those along their timeline with Mel and Dana's stories.
While the ladies are honeymooning, their mothers decide to solve the latest crime in Viva Mama Rossi!.
Crane and Rossi leave for their honeymoon with one murder left unsolved, but Crane’s deputies on the case. Unfortunately, the morning of their departure a man goes missing while Rossi’s mother is shopping in his store. While the ladies bask in hot tubbed bliss, the mothers get together to setup the new Crane-Rossi home and end up in the middle of the gossip mongering about the missing man who then turns up dead. As the mothers add up clues, Crane and Rossi stumble across their own crime scene in their hotel room. The only people who believe that dead man was murdered is Crane’s father, his best friend, and now the mothers. Every one seems to have an ax to grind and when Crane and Rossi get back and add their story to the mix, the mystery gets even more complex.
The more I read of Anne Hagan, the more I like as her mysteries get more complex but never stray too far from far-fetched. I have some unanswered questions leftover from this mystery, but we will see whether they get answered in future mysteries. I did say in an earlier review that I wanted to spend more time with Dana’s family, I just did not expect it to be so soon (laugh). I love her mom and I think her influence will help Crane’s relationship with her mother. She also brings another avenue to the investigation business. I am a little confused about the abrupt switch in Rossi’s career ideas, but I have to assume she is trying on a bunch of different occupations to see what fits. The sex is the usual though I was expecting more since it is the honeymoon (wink). Hagan gives us a solid story and a couple we can grow with which is nice.
I was sent this book by Inked Rainbow Reads in exchange for an honest review.
I was a little confused at the start of this novel, lots of new characters, different scenarios. However as the plot and the storyline developed, so did my intrigue and interest.
Ms Hagen has a way of inventing different, apparently unrelated, incidences and occurrences and not disclosing their relevance until the very end of the mystery, when all is revealed and explained.
I particularly liked the finale, when all the characters are brought together for the exciting revelation.
It was impressive to see both old and new characters, seeing how their lives and personalities' were developing, but as always this is a cleverly constructed stand alone book.
If you are looking for a cleverly construed, intricate and exhilarant mystery, with touches of romance and life like personalities with glimpses of endearing family life and values, then this book will not disappoint.
My only criticism is nothing to do with the actual novel just the irritating typo and layout errors.
Ok I am so loving this series. I loved how Mama Rossi and Faye were doing there own investigation, but make it look like gossiping. The only thing I would have like to see is Mel and Danna getting a little up set that their mothers where doing this. I would definitely recommend.
