He married Éléonore-Alexandrine Meley, who managed much of his household affairs, and later had a long-term relationship with Jeanne Rozerot, with whom he fathered two children. Na trois sucettes a la menthe, heb ik nu de smaak te pakken gekregen van het lezen van franse literatuur. Mijn eerste Pleiadeverhaal! En wonderwel kan ik het, weliswaar met woordenboek in de hand, redelijk tot goed volgen. Het helpt dat het verhaal goed is geschreven. Het boek beschrijft de opkomst van de grote warenhuizen en de concurrentieslag die dat met de kleine traditionele ondernemers teweeg brengt. Denise komt samen met haar broers uit de provincie. Hun ouders zijn gestorven en ze hebben een oom in Parijs waar ze onderdak proberen te krijgen. De oom heeft een eigen zaak. Helaas gaan de zaken slecht waardoor Denise en haar broers niet bij hem kunnen intrekken. De zaken gaan slecht vanwege het tegenover gelegen warenhuis, Au Bonheur des Dames. Denise komt te werken bij het grote warenhuis alwaar ze moet ploeteren om voor haarzelf en haar broers te kunnen zorgen. Na een paar maanden wordt ze ontslagen. Ze werkt even bij een andere kleine zaak, maar die kan niet op-concurreren tegen Au Bonheur. De directeur van Au Bonheur had zijn oog laten vallen op Denise en was ontstemt met haar ontslag. Hij ontmoet haar op straat en biedt haar een positie aan. Om een lang verhaal kort te maken worden zij uiteindelijk verliefd op elkaar.
Zola beschrijft minutieus hoe het eraan toe ging in zo’n groot warenhuis. Het warenhuis groeit en slokt uiteindelijk een heel bouwblok op. Gaandeweg verbeteren ook de arbeidsomstandigheden. Soms wat lange beschrijvingen over interieur en hoe de verkopers werken. Dat geeft wel een goed beeld van de gang van zaken.
Bijzonder aan dit boek vind ik dat ik geen moment het idee heb gehad van “waarom lees ik dit?”. Als ik er eenmaal in begon, dan bleef ik lezen, ondanks de soms lange beschrijvingen. Voor mij een teken van een goed boek.
