Don't Fool With Mother Nature Man has worked long and hard to bend nature to his will, regardless of the consequences. But Mother Nature has her own agenda... A police photographer looking to put the graphic images of her job behind her and a marine biologist who is a champion for the animals and sea life of this earth, find themselves caught in the middle of a dangerous battle between a top-secret government research project and an inevitable force of nature. ONCE IN A BLUE MOON is a story that intertwines the facts and fantasies of science and nature with political intrigue and romance to tell a tale of dolphins and humankind amid the beautiful waters of Southwest Florida.
I received this as a gift. It's a science fiction novel, but that really only comes into play in the last third (maybe last quarter) of the book. It's also a romance, and an adventure tale. Sure, there are dolphins and other cetaceans swimming though this book, but it's mostly the story of Kevin and Natalie. Gotta say, I didn't like Kevin much at first, but then I realized I wasn't really supposed to. The seascape of/around south Florida is lovingly described in this book - almost like it's the third main character. A few small quibbles, but those were my issues. Really well written.
AMAZING!! Natalie is trying to regroup and heal after she has to photograph a particularly horrific crime as part of her job. She goes on vacation to the Gulf of Mexico looking for rest and relaxation, what she encounters is anything but.
She finds herself caught up in a secret government project to use dolphins as weapons and the dolphins have begun to fight back. I loved how the dolphins were their own characters. As any pet owner knows every animal has their own personality and quirks, the author does a great job of capturing the dolphin’s idiosyncrasies so that they are drawn just as well as the humans.
Of course on this adventure there is a man, a handsome principled one. Kevin took me awhile to warm up to, you feel for Natalie when he is being a jerk and you want to reach through the pages to punch him on more than one occasion. His passion for the oceans and its inhabitants shows that he is really a good guy and the tough exterior is just his way of protecting himself. And when Natalie and Kevin finally stop bickering things get HOT!
The book is full of twists and turns, you cannot tell where it will go next and the ending I will not spoil it for you, but OH MY GOD…. I was totally surprised.
What I really enjoyed is though this book is full of nail-biting suspense and plenty of science fiction it has a lot of heart. It shows how our relationships with nature as just as important as our relationships with the people we care about.
“Why do we look to the stars as if our loved ones are there? We should look inside our hearts and souls for that is where they truly live.”
Overall a phenomenal debut book. I cannot wait to see what this author writes next.
