Contact: The Practical Science of Hearing from God

Rate this book
How do you make contact with God? How can you hear his voice in your daily life? What should be a normal Christian experience is unfortunately, for many, only an unfulfilled desire. From the heart of a pastor and the mind of a scientist, Dr. David Stine applies a six-step process to help the reader grow in his or her ability to hear from God through His voice, the written Word, His counsel through trusted advisors, and the confirmation of His peace. Inviting the reader to a 40-day challenge to hear the voice of God, Dr. Stine provides practical applications of each theme. God desires to make contact with you! Are you ready to position yourself to hear from him? Explore the companion workbook, The Experiment, designed to guide you through the 40-day challenge (available on Amazon). With foreword by Jack Hayford WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT "In a culture where there can be many competing “voices” in our lives, the voice that carries the greatest weight can only come from God. God desires relational intimacy with all of us and this can only be cultivated by learning to listen and recognize His voice. David Stine has written a powerful and highly practical book that de-mystifies this process. This is a must-read for everyone!" Stovall Weems Lead Pastor of Celebration Church in Jacksonville, Florida Author of Living the God-First Life "Having had the privilege of knowing David and his wife personally for over 20 years, I can say that David Stine knows what it means to walk with God. His life is an example of someone who seeks the Lord with all of his heart. This book will help resurrect your walk with God as David uses his testimony and experiences to help you hear God’s voice in your life. David is able to make complicated ideas understandable so that we can apply them to our lives. This book will help you to commit to seeking God first and everything else will be added to you." Pastor Joe Champion Lead Pastor of Celebration Church in Austin, Texas Author of How to Respond When Life’s Circumstances Rock You to Your Core "David Stine is a gifted leader, a humble servant, and someone who hears from God. If you’re struggling to hear God’s voice, this book is for you. It’ll help you hear God more clearly, more consistently." Mark Batterson Lead Pastor of National Community Church in Washington D.C., New York Times Best-Selling Author of The Circle Praying Circles Around Your Biggest Dreams and Greatest Fears "There is nothing more elemental to Christian pursuit or more essential to Christian living than hearing the voice of God. With equal parts good theology and good sense, David Stine’s crack at this age-old question demystifies a cluttered subject and offers refreshing, practical help. With the intellectual honesty of a scientist, the care of a pastor, and the zeal of a man who lives this stuff, he helps us relate to a God who is both mystical and rational." Rob Brendle Lead Pastor of Denver United Church in Denver, Colorado Author of In the The Practice of Proactive Waiting "David Stine's new book, The Practical Science of Hearing from God is more than just a book; it’s a step-by-step training manual in how to spend time with the Lord. Much like learning a foreign language, learning to hear the voice of God is a skill that can be acquired through teaching, instruction, and practice.

As Lead Pastor of DC Metro Church, Dr. David Stine is known for his practical biblical teaching, his visionary leadership, and his heart to impact the D.C. Metropolitan area. David’s authenticity and his ability to communicate the truth of God’s Word in a humorous, dynamic, and revelatory manner helps people understand the Bible and how to apply its teachings to their everyday lives.

David is passionate about people coming to know Christ, getting planted in God’s house, and becoming transformational leaders who work together to build a God-first culture throughout the D.C. Metro area. He is honored to be teaching, training, and coaching church leaders and future church planters because he believes that the local church is the hope of the world and that we are meant to be relationally connected with other leaders.

Shortly after coming to Christ in college, David knew there was a call on his life to full-time ministry and sensed God leading him to seminary at Regent University, where he earned his Masters Degree (M.A.) in Practical Theology and his Doctoral Degree (D.Min) in Leadership.

David met his future wife Taryn at Louisiana State University where they both majored in Business and were involved in a campus ministry together. After graduation, they were advancing in their respective careers, but the deepest desire of their hearts was to "do something great for God" together. Today they are parents to four growing children and loving their call to full-time ministry at DC Metro. They believe nothing compares to the joy of experiencing the transformation in people’s lives as they choose the God-first life.

Just like any worthwhile relationship takes dedicated time, so too a relationship with God. Dr. Stine uses the scientific method as his "formula" to keep his relationship with God fresh and to enable him to really listen to what He is saying. His personal stories of him listening and God moving puts credence into what he has learned through the years. An endorsement from the Vice President of Regent University, Virginia Beach, VA, Dr. Joseph Umidi, reads in part: "This book is not theory; it is the reality of a man who has tested it personally and vocationally; finding it both true and trustworthy." The endorser knows Dr. Stine and has watched how the information in the book has played out in real time in Dr. Stine's life. Dr. Stine's book whets my appetite to hear more from God, and getting myself in the position to do so.

I thought this was a good read. Most of what he wrote I have heard in many other books and venues but I like the structure of his approach. Biggest thing I get from this is to keep moving, keep talking with God, and keep in His Word.
