Patricia Hagan

Pat is the published author of over forty books of romantic fiction. Several of her titles have appeared on the New York Times Bestseller list. One of her books, "Ocean of Dreams", is based on her own shipboard romance when she met her former husband, a Norwegian engineer.

She is also a former Radio/TV Motorsports Journalist, covering NASCAR Grand National Stock Car Racing. Her work has won many awards by the National Motorsports Press Association.

Pat has cruised the eastern and western Caribbean extensively, as well as the Greek Islands, the fjords of Norway all the way to the North Cape, and has made several transatlantic crossings.

She prefers traveling single, because it gives her more opportunities to meet and make new friends. While she admits going solo is not for everyone, she says for her it is perfect, because she is an outgoing person, and, being a writer, enjoys meeting new "characters."

The only thing she does not like about traveling is having to leave behind her best friend and companion, Krysy, a 14-year old Wire-haired fox terrier.

There are not explicit spoilers but I put a spoiler tag just in case.

It was okay. I've been reading the whole series up to this point, this book for sure had a lot less violence and rape but, still had some. I know that it's a common theme among this era's bodice rippers but it can still be rather upsetting. Kitty and Travis Coltrane were such a huge, integral part of the first three books and they're mostly only referred to in this book. Kitty is never heard from, only talked about and Travis ex machina shows up near the very end. The plot is very convoluted and almost silly at times, there's incest, rape, murder, domestic abuse. The bad guys are rapey, the male protagonist is rapey and rape is confused for "love" by a female character. It's honestly ridiculous and seems like a man wrote it. There's a graphic depiction of rape as it's the woman's first time and despite her pleas and cries of "no" the "hero" doesn't believe her claims that shes a virgin and the hero even has some stupid moral rule of his and his father's that is to never bed a virgin. After the rape, the hysterical female falls in love with her rapist because he apologized and suddenly all is well. Another thing about these bodice rippers is that two people meet and go from supposing to hate each other and turn on a dime and suddenly they love each other even though they've barely shared a few sentences between them. The author seems to drone on and on about things that you find out really don't matter in the end. The "climax" if you can call it that is in the last two chapters and basically everything falls apart and the things you really want to find out are never mentioned or resolved because the ending is a cliffhanger with no clues as to what happened to basically anyone that you cared about. It was an amusing read for what it was but I don't know that I would recommend it or read it again myself.

I'm not too sure what to say about this book. There was no specific thing the author did that ruined it for me, but when it ended I was left sort of scratching my head.

First off, this book is part of a series and you will feel very left out of the loop - just like I did - if you don't start from the beginning. This series is based around Travis & Kitty Coltrane, but this book focuses on their son John Travis AKA Colt. When the book starts, Travis & Kitty have just moved across the ocean to France leaving Colt by himself in New York to take care of the family business, which includes a silver mine and ranch.

There's a whole lotta back story, but Travis has a daughter by another woman (now dead) who the family has not seen or heard from in 14 years. Travis has been sending money & correspondence to Dani, the daughter, however her aunt, Alaina, who she lives with, has been intercepting them. Dani is unhappy and decides to go live in a covenant, right about the same time Alaina is dead broke. Alaina's adopted son, Gavin, comes up with a plan to get Colt to hand over Dani's half of the business (which she is clueless about) to them. Using Dani isn't an option, but her maid & best friend, Briana, looks very similar. Briana also has a younger brother who is crippled and in dire need of a very expensive life surgery, which makes her desperate for cash.

So, Gavin and Briana (who is impersonating Dani) head to New York to try and Swindle Colt and get Danis inheritance.

Confused yet? Me too.

Here are some of the problems I had with this book.

The "romance" aspect, as in an actual evolving relationship between Colt & Briana, doesn't happen until about 50 pages from the end. We are told Briana is in love w/ Colt, but are forced to simply accept the fact, with no real explanations or info. Colt goes from "yeah, if she wan't my sister I'd do her" to "you're the love of my life" in about a paragraph.

Colt has a lot of sex. With not Dani. Now, if he's a playboy, then fine. No big deal. But the set up for these encounters all seem sorta random.

There's Charlene, who he has hooked up with in the past but has no feelings whatsoever for her and tells her so in pretty blunt terms. She won't take no for an answer and pretty much - pathetically - begs him. He pretty much just does it to shut her up.

Then there's is this whole random side story with Becky, which has absolutely to do with anything. Becky is sweet, loving and seemingly the perfect girl. For a while I thought I was confused and that Becky was the heroine. She is head over heels for Colt and he has some significantly string feelings for her return. Until he finds out she's actually a prostitute and kicks her to the curb.

And finally, there is Alaina. Ugh. Apparently her and his daddy, Travis, had a romp or two back in the day and it rocked her world. Colt goes to her looking for info on Briana's whereabouts. She gives up the info, but in order to get it he has to make love, and lets her call him Travis while he pretends to be his dad. Ick.

And btw, when Travis comes into the picture later on when Alaina is dying, he easily kisses and lies to her telling Alaina how much he wants her and how he has always been in love with her. Colt hears all this and gives him a funny look to which Travis replies "Never condemn a man for leaving a woman happy."

I'm starting to get a better picture of what Travis & Kitty's trilogy would have been like. . .

And my last pet peeve? This book ends 100% on a cliffhanger. No joke.

I did enjoy this book but my one complaint is that it ended abruptly.
