TT. Thorn Coyle has been arrested at least four times. Buy her a cup of tea or a good whisky and she'll tell you about it.
A salty-tongued, tattooed mystic, Thorn is author of the alt-history urban fantasy series The Panther Chronicles, the novel Like Water, and two short story collections. The Witches of Portland will be out in Spring, 2018. She has also written multiple non-fiction books including Sigil Magic for Writers, Artists & Other Creatives, Kissing the Limitless, and Evolutionary Witchcraft. Thorn's work appears in many anthologies, magazines, and collections.
She has taught magical practice in nine countries, on four continents, and in twenty-five states. Her other occupations have been numerous, and include working four years each on the Pacific Stock Options floor (as a young Anarchist punk with a blue, flat-top Mohawk), in a woman-run peep show, and full time in the San Francisco soup kitchen she ended up volunteering at for twenty years. All of this, along with her activism, informs her fiction.
An interloper to the Pacific Northwest, Thorn joyfully stalks city streets, writes in cafes, and talks to crows, squirrels, and trees.
Always love Coyle’s sensibilities — creative, magical, practical. Written specifically for creatives, but anyone can read to get a sense of how to use this tool. Emphasis on the preparation and the philosophy, not many visual examples. But I think that’s because for Coyle it’s important they come out of your need, your desire, your intuition, your purpose and that’s its entirely yours, and not just some cobbled together symbols from the internet or a book.
Another book that found me at the right time. In addition to sigils and how you can use them when setting goals for your creative pursuits, this book also offers practical advice on manifesting your goals. I enjoyed the way the information was presented, as well as the exercises (which were simple and straight to the point) and I feel like I have gained a great deal of clarity. I also had a "lightbulb moment", which I am going to explore further.
T. Thorn Coyle’s Sigil Magic for Writers, Artists, & Other Creatives offers a practical and inspiring take on how to harness the power of sigils to fuel creativity. Unlike traditional books on sigil magic that focus on manifestation or spellcraft, Coyle directs her attention to the creative process itself. Writers, artists, and creators of all kinds will find this revised and expanded edition a unique guide that blends the magical and artistic, helping unlock blocks, boost focus, and reignite the flow of inspiration.
One of the key strengths of this book is how Coyle makes the concept of sigil magic accessible for creators who might not be familiar with occult practices. She introduces sigils as symbolic signatures—marks imbued with intention that call forth the desired outcomes. Coyle draws parallels to familiar symbols, like a corporate logo or an artist’s signature on a work of art, making the magical process relatable and grounded. This practical connection demystifies sigil creation, opening up the practice to a wider audience who may be unfamiliar with esoteric techniques but are looking for new tools to ignite their creative spark.
Coyle provides a structured approach to designing and using sigils specifically to enhance the creative process. She walks readers through crafting their own sigils, offering clear steps that anyone can follow, whether they are a seasoned practitioner or new to magic altogether. The book is filled with actionable items, including prompts and exercises that guide readers through creative challenges and help them navigate obstacles like writer’s block, lack of inspiration, or low energy. Sigils become more than just magical tools; they are integrated into the daily work of creation, empowering artists and writers to direct their focus and tap into their inner wells of creativity.
What sets this book apart is Coyle’s deep understanding of both magic and the creative process. Her writing reflects an intimate knowledge of the cycles that artists and writers go through—periods of productivity followed by dry spells, moments of clarity interrupted by doubt. Rather than offering a quick fix, Coyle emphasizes the importance of persistence, using sigils as a means to engage with the ebbs and flows of creativity. She frames creativity as an act of both magic and renewal, something that requires nurturing and constant attention. Sigils, in this context, are tools that help creators stay aligned with their goals and keep the creative fire burning.
Another standout element of Sigil Magic for Writers, Artists, & Other Creatives is its focus on the importance of creativity in times of upheaval. Coyle highlights how art, writing, and creative expression are essential for navigating the turbulence of the modern world. Creativity not only provides solace and beauty, but it can also shine a light on truths that need to be spoken. In a world where many creators may feel disconnected from their art, Coyle’s message is one of hope and empowerment. She reminds readers that creativity is an act of magic in itself, capable of bringing people together and fostering understanding.
The book’s revised and expanded content includes new discussions on how to approach the creative process from a magical perspective. Coyle offers sigils for various stages of creation, from setting intentions to finding inspiration, overcoming obstacles, and celebrating finished works. These sigils are presented as both visual and verbal tools, encouraging readers to experiment with their designs and tailor them to their own needs. The emphasis on personalizing sigil work ensures that each reader can adapt the techniques to their own creative practice.
For writers, artists, and creators seeking a fresh approach to unlocking their potential, Sigil Magic for Writers, Artists, & Other Creatives is a powerful resource. T. Thorn Coyle’s blend of magical insight and creative wisdom provides a framework for artists to reconnect with their inspiration and craft in a way that feels both mystical and grounded.
