Selfies, sexbots, and drones collide in these interwoven nanofictions about a society before, during, and after its collapse. With dazzling humor and insight, debut author S. Kay reveals a future that looks disconcertingly like the present. Beautifully illustrated by Thoka Maer, Reliant is a bold examination of society's unrequited love for technology.
S. Kay is a quick processing @blueberrio, zapping tweet-sized stories to analyze future and fact. A Canadian Air Force brat who moved often, she now lives in Vancouver, BC, Canada. She is a queer, neurodiverse author.
Her debut book RELIANT is an apocalypse in tweets. JOY explores relentless rejection through multiple electronic devices in a novella. LOST IN THE LAND OF BEARS (July 2016) is a cross-genre tale-in-tweets with quirky creatures and machines in the forest.
Stories also appear in the anthologies Outliers of Speculative Fiction, 140 and Counting, and On a Narrow Windowsill. Follow @blueberrio for new stories.
Before I can think of anything else, I have to say this: THIS BOOK HAS THE PERFECT LAST LINE. It's a weird accolade, but it's true. I don't think I've ever been so stupefyingly awed by a final sentence before.
Ahem. Anyway.
I was kindly given an ARC, and let me be one of the first to say that this isn't just a book, it's an experience. The emotions inspired range from amused ("Patriobots") to hopeful ("Integration") to discomfort as this future hits close to home (Flipping Burgers"). That's without touching on the final third, which I think it's best to let each reader stumble into without spoilers.
