Get Selfish: The Way is Through by Joanna Hunter A Book Review by Gemma Ann White
The first of this book’s seven steps “to creating lasting happiness and abundance in your life,” begins with a retelling of a symbolic meditation experienced by the author. The fountain symbol described, acts as an apt metaphor for the central premise of the book; that without filling our own reserves of energy, we do not have anything left to give to ourselves, let alone others. Hunter quickly invites us into her own search for happiness as it transforms from being dependent on outside ‘quick fixes’ to true inner healing and peace of mind.
Although these are far from new concepts, Hunter rewrites these lessons in self-love using engaging language, rich in imagery. Her writing voice is friendly, helpful and exuberant, with tangible excitement for the topics she discusses throughout the book. The experience of reading Get Selfish is like being guided through a process of self-discovery by a trusted childhood friend with a healthy sense of humour and rainbow shoelaces.
Hunter calls the first step to Get Selfish as “going through”, meaning that in order to move forward and find some sense of fulfilment in life, we must sort through the old emotional (and perhaps physical) junk that is holding us back. Hunter writes that honestly facing blocks with compassion for oneself is crucial to the process of self-development. But what does the author really mean by Get Selfish? Hunter describes the process clearly:
Getting selfish, for me, is about a thousand loving actions towards myself. At its basic level, it is self-care, and the strength to finally say, “I am good enough – I am worthy.” It is honouring… and valuing myself, listening and responding to my own needs. Thus, I become a person I love to be.
This book is a perfect introduction to a range of metaphysical concepts; the universe as a teacher, the law of attraction, the idea of abundance versus lack mentality. If these words offend you or seem a bit woo-woo this may not be the book for you, it requires a certain openness of mind towards these ideas that some readers may class as a little bit hippy. However, where Hunter really shines is in her focus on choice and responsibility for one’s own actions, and the resulting conscious creation of our lives. This is displayed in the recollections of her own thought patterns early on in her spiritual development and explanations of how they kept her stuck as well as how she moved past these limiting beliefs.
While the content is certainly worth a read, mention must also go to the artistic and almost magical aesthetics of this e-book. Care has been taken to make each page a visual delight with watercolour effects and sparkly inspiring quotes throughout. All in all, Get Selfish is a comforting call to action, an insightful read which gently introduces metaphysical concepts with ease. I imagine ladies with hippy leanings who are relatively new to self-help books and spiritual development would greatly enjoy this book. It may also make an appropriate gift for a young girl seeking an author-mentor to help her develop a healthy self-esteem through potentially challenging teenage years.
A great and easy read. She talks about lessons that a lot of self-help books and coaches talk about and flips it and makes it easily digestible and to implement. I love all the quotes that she includes through the book and find them encouraging.
The book took me about 2 hours to read which makes it perfect for going back and reviewing at anytime without it being a time commitment.
I bought this book a little over a year ago and didn’t get to reading it but kept following Joanna and taking her courses and love working with her. When I finally picked it up to read I wasn’t surprised about how drawn to her words and message I was. She really resonates with me.
This book is exactly what the title promises, straightforward, uplifting, and deeply empowering. Joanna Hunter has a unique way of cutting through the noise and speaking directly to the heart. The blend of personal empowerment and manifestation wisdom makes this not just a ‘read once and forget’ book, but one you’ll want to revisit whenever you need a reminder of your own power. The illustrations and quotes are a beautiful touch that make the journey even more inspiring. A true guide for anyone ready to step into their best life.
