Jim se levantó una mañana sabiendo que sus vacaciones habían terminado y era hora de regresar al mundo real y seguir con la rutina. Empacó sus pertenencias y emprendió el camino de vuelta a la civilización, después de haber pasado unas semanas agradables en su cabaña de caza. Cuando alcanzó el pueblo más cercano, se extrañó al contemplar la destrucción y lo solitario que parecía todo. Necesitando gasolina para poder continuar su camino, se detuvo en un establecimiento y cuál sería su sorpresa al verse atacado por unas personas “extrañas y grotescas”.

[…] movía los brazos, paralelos y estirados, como el monstruo de Frankenstein de las películas antiguas. La cara de la mujer estaba mutilada hasta resultar irreconocible. Los otros tres gemían como si les doliera algo.

Rescatado por Mick y Chuck, Jim descubre que el mundo se ha ido al garete mientras él se encontraba descansando y que una mordida de esas criaturas significa la muerte y resurrección en una forma carente de alma y pensamiento. Uniéndose a ellos, para intentar encontrar sobrevivientes y a la espera de que el gobierno haga algo para detener la enfermedad, Jim combate a lado de sus nuevos amigos, en un camino lleno de desesperación, angustia, pérdidas y fe.

Realmente mi bagaje cultural en cuestión de zombis no es tan grande como me gustaría, pero hay unos cuantos en mi lista que me permiten de algún modo ubicar este libro en un ranking. El Reino de los Zombis es una lectura agradable, disfrutable y bien escrita a la que desde mi punto de vista le hace falta más emoción.

Los personajes, Jim, Sharon, Amanda, Mick, Felicia… son agradables, son muy reales en sus miedos, su angustia… Me gustó mucho que ellos tuvieran actitud, que supieran ser fuertes y enfrentarse a esas difíciles decisiones que tomaron. El problema en sí, fue la falta de información con la que me quedé, los huecos que no se pudieron llenar sobre el origen de la enfermedad, al que se le ha dado un enfoque muy espiritual. Tengo entendido que hay otra novela para esta serie “Apocalypse End” que será publicada por La Factoría de Ideas también, pero me intriga el final de este libro que parece ser conclusivo. De modo que me pregunto, ¿de dónde surgió todo? La segunda cuestión es la emoción, el suspense, la intriga. Hay una historia bien amarrada, pero los detalles gore no fueron lo suficientes para hacerme temblar de emoción. No sé si logro explicarme, siempre he pensado que los libros de zombis deben dejarte con la piel chinita y mordiéndote las uñas por saber qué más vendrá. Siempre con el Jesús en la boca. Y salvo un par de escenas, la mayor parte del libro la pasé sin preocuparme por los zombis que se les acercaban, y eso que las descripciones eran muy buenas.

Pienso entonces, que la narración es el problema real, falta esa motivación que los autores le dan al lector para querer salir huyendo despavoridos sin soltar el libro. Disfruté El Reino de los Zombis y lo recomiendo para quienes quieran una lectura de zombis ligera, pero si son fans del horror zombi puede que les resulte demasiado falto de acción.

First Impression: Very cute

Art/Colors: Adorable black and white illustrations throughout

Not the first in the series, but it totally doesn���t matter. This is one of the cutest, sweetest, most tender and loving children���s books I���ve read in a long time. It teaches good lessons without being religious and preachy, a rare combination. The talking animals are adorable and sweet. The book even starts with a great proverb: ��� Be Humble, for you are made of earth. Be noble for you are made of stars.��� Love it. I love one of the minor characters names:Polly Pumpkin seed. Adorable. Also, love the word collywobbles which is apparently a funny name for stomach aches. I have no idea if its a made up word or not, but Its adorable. Just like the entire book. I only with the illustrations were in color and maybe a little better, but they are so sweet even if not perfect.

Praises: Newspaper clippings can get annoying in books. However, they are handled very well in this book. Not too many and not to few. Just the right amount. And they don���t run on too long.

Kudos to Barnhart for getting it done (“He who never makes mistakes, never makes anything”), but this book was just terrible. Obviously released through a vanity publisher, this book was entirely unoriginal and clumsily executed. When poor punctuation rises to the level of distraction, you can imagine how the substance of the writing will rate.

You know it's bad when you read "Tutor style houses" and can't be sure it's a typo.

I read this book entirely for the benefit of my non-reader fiance. I figured if a book was good enough for him to read it in a matter of days, I should give it a shot. It's definitely not my type of book, but I think it was very good for the zombie genre. No thinking, running zombies here. Just good old fashioned brain-eating.

El libro lo compre en el 2014 pero aunque siempre dije qué lo iba a leer, no fue si no hasta 3 años después. al principio se me hizo un poco lento y no le tenía mucha expectativa. Pero después de al rededor de 50 paginas el libro engancha mucho. lo terminé en un dia y quede a la expectativa de inviar el segundo libro.

I love zombie stories. I appreciate what this author was trying to do. I am also a person who will spend the money on a book related to this subject regardless of other reviews simply because I crave it all and want to get my hands on everything that I can. So my opinion is biased.

Despite my bias towards zombies, this book is not a high caliber work amongst the other offerings I have collected from Amazon thus far. The story has one main plot: a group of survivors, led by a larger than life movie star level stud, tries to survive a zombie holocaust. Two secondary stories are also a part of the story-one of the government as it self destructs at the highest level, which was ok, and an absolutely unnecessary divergence with a preacher who has visions of grandeur in the aftermath of the apocalypse but ends up being worthless. He is less than a thorn in the side of our main characters-he shows up and dies within ten seconds. I hate to divulge a key plot point like that, but if perhaps he had been more than just a blip on their radar he might have been worth something. Perhaps the author felt there needed to be a human antagonist to go along with the undead. He is probably right, but this guy fails miserably at that.

Throw in some totally unnecessary "visions" by a couple of characters that are an attempt to bring the supernatural into this story which did not need it and where it made no sense and you have yet another distraction that served the plot poorly.

The story idea itself was ok. I like the idea of people trying to survive under horrendous circumstances and the human dynamic going on. In that, the author kept things interesting enough. But his dialogue is over simplified (and along with the editing mistakes is sometimes confusing. A question mark here and there that were out of place made no sense at all). There is a heavy duty element of predictiblity in the plot as well. Within one sentence we know that this main character will end up in a relationship with this other main character...and this is repeated with another set of main characters. I think the phrase "she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen" was used twice and from there it was absolutely no surprise at all.

Again, I think this author might have some potential to spin some good yarns and if he can improve his "voice" and work at making his characters more than paper thin flimsy he might be someone I will look to reading some more works from in the future. This story here entertained me enough as a genre fan-I like to collect the different ideas of different authors and for that I appreciated it, but it simply wasn't that great a book.

Una muy buena novela de zombies para todos aquellos fans del genero. La historia empieza con Jim quien se había tomado unas vacaciones en una zona aislada y el día que regresa (después de 3 semanas incomunicado) resulta que la civilización ha desaparecido y hay muertos vivientes en todas partes y lo miran con ojitos de hambre XD. Por suerte es rescatado por uno de los últimos grupos de sobrevivientes y así se une a ellos para tratar de salvar a la mayor cantidad de vivos que sea posible.

Uno de los puntos que no terminó de convencerme es el hecho de que no se sabe que paso, nunca explican como inicio o donde inicio todo, solamente el hecho de que los muertos empezaron a revivir y a atacar a los vivos; entiendo que no sepan que ocasiono todo el apocalipsis (de hecho como que dan indicios de empezar a averiguarlo a lo largo de la novela), pero me hubiera gustado un poco mas de detalle en cuanto a como inicio todo, porque solo dieron pinceladas, no digo que fuera necesario un capitulo pero si algo mas de explicación.

Dejando de lado ese punto el resto de la novela me gusto mucho, incluso esos toques paranormales que pusieron con Felicia quien es capaz de hacer predicciones del futuro. En la novela se incluye desde el sacerdote loco que cree que todo es obra divina y que él es el elegido para salvar a la humanidad y quien no este con él/Dios esta en contra de Dios/él; hasta el político ambicioso que cuando tiene el poder en sus manos no duda en destruir todo a su alrededor sin importar las consecuencias.

Pero sobre todo vemos unos cuantos héroes que realmente quieren sobrevivir, que ayudan y se preocupan por los demás, ese liderazgo que surge en los momentos de mayor necesidad. Hay toquecillos de romance, pero sobre todo hay zombies, muchos zombies, hambrientos y al parecer cada vez mas inteligentes. Algo que me quedo en duda es que hay otra novela (El Final del Desastre) que es continuación de ésta sin embargo desde mi punto de vista la historia concluye y bien, no tengo idea de que vaya a tratar el otro libro, sin embargo cuando lo publiquen sin duda lo leeré porque me gusto la forma de escribir de Barnhart, me gustaron sus zombies y porque tengo duda de que va (^__^)d.

In my opinion, this book would most likely come after the movie Dawn of the Dead, the 1970's one. Not the remade one.

Yes, there are some grammar mistakes but those are very few and far between.

This book revolves around Jim Workman, an everyday working man in construction taking some much needed vacation time. When he comes back, he is surprised to see that the world is a very different place. What I liked most about this novel is the fact that the author didn't spend 80 or so pages explaining how things were before the epidemic of zombie's. In fact, I'd say by page 4, he dives right into the gritty reality. Jim, a man of few words and little or no past, comes across a group of survivors, around 150, who are held up in an abandoned building. Along the way, more characters are introduced and intersect each other, bringing the chilling discoveries to life. It has all the elements of a horror movie and all the tense mood scenes too. The dialogue is simple and to the point, sounding exactly like struggling survivor talk.

I was surprised to find that this book left me wanting more. The whole book is really well-planned out. There are numerous scenes that I enjoy about this book.

Some said that they didn't like the short chapters but I disagree, having the chapters be 1 to 4 pages long actually intensified the excitement and made me eager to read more. This is also a good device done in the book "The Da Vinci Code."

If you're a fan of zombie horror, then you will love this imaginative book just like I did.

And don't misunderstand. This ain't just some blood and gut's book. These characters actually have certain traits that help them along in the story and show that they are trying to remain sane while still trying to survive and question the future.

I can't wait to read the second book. This is a really good story for a debut author. Really well done. It would make George Romereo proud!

Len Barnhart’s “Reign Of The Dead” is the first novel of his post-apocalyptic zombie series. To date there is only one sequel so far released, entitled “Reign Of The Dead: Apocalypse End”, but a third instalment is due out in the autumn of 2006 entitled “Reign Of The Dead: Outbreak”. The first two novels have both been released through iUniverse Star publications.

From the start of the novel, the reader is quickly thrown into the devastating turn of events that have brought the human race close to extinction. The story follows a small collection of survivors who have to struggle daily within their desperate situation. Len’s writing offers up a thick serving of splatter to keep the average gore fiend happy, whilst still producing a fast-paced and action packed tale. With haunting similarities to that of Romero’s “Dead” series of films, Len has managed to bring in elements of the mental stress and personal conflicts that would undoubtedly arise from such an unbelievable situation.

The book will keep you entertained from the first few pages to the dramatic conclusion, delivering high tension, breath-taking suspense and blood caked action. The book is available in both paperback and hardback, but due to a small number of pressings, it does cost quite a bit. I bought the book in hardback and felt happy with the item I received. The book runs for a total of 272 pages.

Es el primer libro de zombis que leo y me decepciono. Esperaba leer algo más aterrador y lleno de acción y me pareció un tanto lento y sin grandes escenas de gore, que es lo que esperarías leer en un libro de muertos que comen sesos.

La trama es buena a secas, quedan varias incógnitas que espero se resuelvan en el segundo libro. Dentro de los muchos temas, que toca el autor, hubo uno que me pareció curioso y que no sé si es algo común en este tipo de libros (yo supongo que no) y son las personas con premoniciones (¿cómo se les llama?), y les da una gran importancia en cierta parte de la trama, supongo que es algo original.

Es un libro entretenido, que después de unas cien páginas se torna más interesante y cierra mejor. Las personas que hayan leído más sobre este tópico tendrán una opinión más acertada al respecto, por mi parte continuare la historia para ver si mejora.

The reading equivalent of a Big Mac and fries. It's cheap, greasy and tasty. But you know what? I like going to Mcdonalds every now and then and I enjoyed this book quite a bit. It took like 2 sittings to read and it has some fun gory/action scenes for fans of the zombie genre. Sneaky funny story I was reading this on my break at work and my boss walks into the room and asks what i'm reading and I kinda just say "ahh nothing, it's stupid". He's like "no cmon tell me what it is". I shamefully flipped him the cover and said "Reign of the Dead". He awkwardly responds "oh....that's...that's cool." and walks out of the room. Cringe.

I really wish Good Reads ratings had half stars as I would rate this 3.5 at least. Reign of the Dead was a great read - very tasty fast food for the zombie lover.

Of course, we all know this story, it's been covered over & over but I don't get tired of reading good zombie books. So, no new ground is covered by Reign of the Dead, it's a little predictable but it's definitely readable, engaging & hard to put down nevertheless.

If you want to get your zombie on & read a basic outbreak & survival story pick this up. :)

Terrible, derivative zombie novel. The reasoning behind the plague was down-right silly and the characters were so cookie-cutter and predictable that I, for fun, guessed which ones would be killed and which would survive and was 100% correct.

The only reason I read this was because I tried out an experiment of pulling a random book off the shelf and reading it no matter what. This experiment lasted two books.

No recomiendo este libro.
En general no es tan profundamente malo como otros que he leído, sin embargo tiene muchos defectos que no se pueden pasar por alto:
- La historia no es interesante, no tiene mucha acción y es como muy plana, uno la mayor parte del tiempo siente que no está pasando nada y hasta se torna aburrido.
- Los personajes no están como que muy bien construidos, también son muy planos, carentes de una personalidad interesante y eso hace que prácticamente te valga madres si les pasa algo o no.
- Nunca sientes que los personajes estén en peligro realmente, eso vuelve muy aburrido casi que todo el libro.
- El desarrollo de los echos no es como que muy relevante, ves personajes yendo de aquí a allá haciendo esto y lo otro pero no es nada como que aporte mucho a la historia, no genera preguntas o respuestas.
- El peor error de todo este libro es la falta de lógica en una situación de supervivencia zombie, durante todo el libro ves a los personajes utilizando armas de fuego y malgastando munición para absolutamente todo!!! Que si hay que matar a un zombie??? PUM!!!! Balazo a la cabeza. Que si hay que abrir una puerta??? PUM!!!! Balazo a la cerradura. Que si hay que abrir una bolsa de papitas??? PUM!!!! Balazo a la bolsa de papas. Osea es ridículo el desperdicio de munición que se hace en este libro, no hay racionalización ni lógica, ni siquiera en ningún momento se les ocurre usar armas de mano de ningún tipo.
Y lo peor de todo es que en el "climax" de la historia cuando están en plena huida con todos los supervivientes que hay que proteger se dan cuenta de que "Ups!!! Ve que problema nos estamos quedando sin balas", osea tienen a la horda gigantesca de zombies prácticamente pisandoles los talones y se quedan sin balas!!!!! Después de todo el desperdicio que hicieron a lo largo del libro!!!!! Y no contentos con esto resulta que huyeron prácticamente sin armas de mano, al final quedaron casi que con puras pistolas sin balas.
Sinceramente no recomiendo este libro, yo me lo leí xq me lo habían prestado de buena fe y por puro compromiso de cumplirle a la persona que me lo había prestado lo leí completito, pero si no hubiera sido por eso lo hubiera dejado botado desde que iba como por un 30% del libro.

4/5 Este libro me sorprendió gratamente, soy muy emotiva con las escenas de muerte de algún personaje protagonista, me va fatal, sufro mucho porque llego a apreciarlos. Pero aquí sentí amena la lectura, no lo sentí agotador y no sufrí tanto (no como creí que sufriría).

Me gustó que fuera relatado desde diferentes puntos de vista. Llegué a conocer y a apreciar a varios personajes, y los capítulos cortos ayudaban a digerir más las situaciones de cada uno de ellos. Si había mucha tensión en una historia, la otra daba un respiro. Y me gustó eso.

(SPOILERS) Detesté el personaje del reverendo Peterson, desde el inicio supe que su sola presencia sería una desgracia; y sentí que su final se resolvió muy fácilmente. El alcalde también era un dolor latente. Y me dolieron varias muertes, pero principalmente la de Chuck y Jordan, a este último sentí que se le debió de haber dado la oportunidad de desarrollarse mejor.

Un buen libro, que a pesar de ser sobre zombies es algo "alentador" y no tan rompecorazones. A algunos podría no gustarles eso, pero a mí sí me ha gustado y entretenido lo suficiente. No sé si seguiré leyendo su continuación, me parece un libro autoconclusivo, pero quien sabe, tal vez después me apetezca.

Encontré este libro en la biblioteca de mi casa y decidí leerlo, me gustan los zombies.
Aunque debo decir que no soporto mucho las traducciones. Se sienten extrañas, siempre hay vocabulario que no usamos en Argentina, así que prefiero leer en idioma original si este es inglés.
Le doy 2* porque me pareció como que todo pasaba muy por arriba. Como que no entraba en profundidad en nada, ni en las situaciones, ni en los vínculos ni en los personajes. Me imaginé que el reverendo iba a jugar un papel mucho más importante, me imaginaba un gran enfrentamiento al final, un momento de máxima tensión, pero no. Igual venía mirando el número de páginas que faltaban para terminarlo y me daba cuenta que no iba a llegar a ahondar en ningún enfrentamiento ni nada, y así pareció, como que el final era apurado.
