Laurie Paige grew up on a farm in Kentucky, four miles from the Tennessee border, with four older brothers and two older sisters. Before she started school her family moved to town. That is when she discovered the library. She met her husband, Bob, in the Sweet Shop. She has a degree in mathematics and works as a computer engineer.
WRONG ASSUMPTIONS This was on a list of revenge romances The author was Laurie Bright (aka Daphne Clair) That this would be an angst fest and wrap up in one volume.
WHAT I GOT The author was Laurie Paige who writes sentences like: “The two females eagerly exited the car to see the view.”
The story was the beginning of a six-volume series concerning a central villain (hero’s father) who murdered (or had murdered) his business partner in the diamond trade (heroine’s father) 25 years before. This villain also impregnated the heroine’s mother with twins before the murder. Heroine’s mother was left penniless. Heroine, the oldest, was four when the family fled to Colorado . By the time the twins were born, the heroine’s mother had five kids under five and was bitter until her untimely death at age 50. Heroine and her police officer brother (one of the twins and half-brother to the hero) have vowed to solve this crime by returning to San Francisco and finding a possible witness to the events on the villain’s yacht.
Heroine moves next door the widower hero and befriends his five-year-old daughter. Hero recognizes the heroine from their kindergarten days right away and they begin a courtship. Hero knows his father is evil, so he’s not too conflicted dating the heroine. The story ends with the H/h marrying and joining forces to solve the mystery.
Nothing was solved in this story. I’m not a mystery fan, so I don’t know how these sort of series work. Don’t they solve something in every story? They didn’t even find the possible witness in this one.
Hero also had two siblings, so I don’t know if they will be featured in the next stories or not. The hero’s father is truly evil and was the most interesting character in the story, sadly enough. The San Francisco travelogue was nice.
The romance was barely there since the author had a lot of backstory to shovel and character arcs to set up.
