This hardcover book about Austria is from the children or youth section of the library. I have several "childrens" books on other countries checked out of the library. Compared to guides for adults, the children's books are more colorful, shorter, and do a better job of picking out the significant things to know about, in this case, Austria. Guides likd "Lonely Planet" and Fodor" are better used as references with their thick heavy structure, small print, and detailed information about every curve in the road. I enjoyed this one.
Read this every night to my daughter in preparation for our trip to Austria. Written more like a short textbook for Americans, it covers history, culture, terrain, food, monarch, political system, music - the whole nine yards.
I enjoyed reading it to my seven year old. She got a little unhappy about the German takeover of Austria and discussion about Adolf Hitler. If only he got into the Art University in Vienna…
