David Meltzer was a poet associated with both the Beat Generation and the San Francisco Renaissance. A pioneer of jazz poetry readings, Meltzer also formed a psychedelic folk-rock group. He performed with the music and poetry review, "Rockpile." He edited many anthologies, including San Francisco Beat: Talking with the Poets (City Lights, 2001), and published 11 erotic novels. He taught for many years in the poetics program at New College of California.
finished this yesterday; read it while flying. It is fun to read adult erotica in public--what meltzer called "Agitsmut". haha. this didn't get me aroused though. this was a combination of reading something like allen ginsberg coupled with sci fi and every conceivable taboo and gender variation. it's downright descriptive and mouthy but after hearing all the different ways and contexts that cum might come up it got kind of desensitizing for me. maybe reading it all in two sits was too much too quickly. there are some extraordinarily beautiful passages throughout and the weaving of multiple stories. sometimes the narrator switched genders or biological features and half the time i didn't know what voice should be in my head. that was pretty cool. lots of sex, blood, cum, violence, desperation, and humor. i think i liked it, but i can't be sure. well done, david, well done.
