A twelve-year cancer survivor and oncology rehabilitation specialist, Dr. Julie K. Silver wrote "After Cancer Treatment" to help others recover from the exhaustion and physical devastation that often follow treatment. This new edition of the book, retitled "Before and After Cancer Treatment," describes improved therapies, better delivery of care, holistic care options, and energetics. In covering the benefits of prehabilitation strategies, which improve physical and emotional strength before beginning therapy, the book adds another dimension to the experience of cancer treatment. Dr. Silver fills this survivor-oriented book with exercise and diet recommendations as well as step-by-step instructions for fighting fatigue, monitoring mood, and overcoming setbacks. Readers are encouraged to set balanced goals, take time to heal, and consult both conventional and alternative medicine.
Most people will live for many years after their initial cancer diagnosis--often cured or in remission. Some will live with cancer as a chronic condition. The goal is always to live life to the fullest, which means feeling as strong as possible--physically and emotionally. Dr. Silver recommends daring to dream again and preparing for the future. Wherever they are in their own journey with cancer, readers will find here a personal, practical, and powerful guide to recovery.
This book was given to me by a friend for my family member with a recent cancer diagnosis. As a caregiver, I have read the book through this lens, and have found the book to be extremely helpful as next steps are taken for treatment. I will be able to assist my loved one with next steps to "heal faster, heal stronger, heal optimally," using sensible guidelines outlined in the book. The guidelines are not overwhelming, but rather encouraging and empowering.
I was asked to review this by the Nursing Times Journal.
As someone who observed her mother in law go through what appeared to be thoughtlessness by bombarding her with chemotherapy and then suffer neutropenic sepsis and not be monitored properly - I was keen to see whether this book may have offered help.
The author knows cancer well - she is a twelve year cancer survivor and Oncology specialist - that in itself is remarkable and inspiring.
The author explores both conventional medicine versus the non conventional- which can seem to some as brave- but why not- this is about choice. The author explores studies that have been conducted over many years and some of the treatments are suggestive of postie links but not conclusive.
you are what you eat and I am a great believer that if you eat properly and less processed your diet is then you will be able to fight more toxins.there is a really interesting chapter on diet, counteracting fatigue- there is a good reference guide at the end of the chapter.
I do feel if my mother in law had survived I would have been able to share this book with her and help her through the aftermath. it just has everything and the author is meticulous to detail.
Chapter 13 was really powerful as it explores love and the possibility cancer sufferers who have good family connections and loved ones could influence our ability to survive cancer.
