Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.
I mean...it was mindless fluff. Jessica was immature and drove me nuts throughout the book. The Winston story got a little ridiculous with the “prank.” And what’s with all the dances in college?
Despite all of this....I want to know what happens with Elizabeth and Tom/Winston and Denise. I want to know what happens with the sports scandal expose piece (you know, that hard hitting Elizabeth Wakefield journalism).
What is it about my brain that makes me want to keep reading? The other half of my brain is really into non-fiction right now, so maybe I need some comic relief? More likely, some long dormant part of my psyche recognizes these characters and the storylines, and is urging me to keep reading. It’s almost like childhood unfinished business.
And it’s fun, mindless entertainment after you’ve had a glass or two of wine and are drained from a long day....on to book 3....despite the smarter part of my conscience screaming for me to stop.
SWEET VALLEY UNIVERSITY Written by Francine Pascal General Review for series as I cannot remember each novel.
I read Sweet Valley University when I was in junior high school to high school. While there is sexual content it is very mild (not explicit) compared to teen books today. If you like the Sweet Valley High you will love this series as it continues with the twins' story as they attend University and are away from their parents. I am not sure how they would relate to teens today as this was before cell phones were common and social media. They are fun teen romances with "real-life" situation. I did not complete the series as I started to save for school so I wasn't able to collect them any further (they are out of print). I still have the books I bought and may try to read one again (I did reread the series a few times).
For those of you who have ever fallen for a bad boy, this book (and series) is for you. It comes as no surprise that I always identified more with Jessica than Elizabeth, so reading more of her love affair with a very bad boy kept me enthralled and wanting more.
Laurie John does a fantastic job of separating the chapters into sections focusing on different characters across campus, as if the reader is a bird, flitting from one conversation to the next, catching snippets and desperate to learn more of each person's situation. I love this series, and the new characters (like Jessica's new boyfriend) are a great addition to the already wonderful SVU gang.
After growing up on Sweet Valley Twins and then Sweet Valley High, I was so happy to move on to more adult topics at college as I was becoming a young adult myself. I loved the SVU books and followed them to about #30. Great series!
