In Sliced, Meredith finally gets what she's always wanted: a chance to deliver pizzas for the neighborhood Pizza King. But when she narrowly escapes being run over, crushed in a garbage truck, and sliced up in the local cheese factory, she realizes that the job can be dangerous.
Oh we've got a wild one here. We start May with some vintage goodness. Retro of Raiders of the Bookmark made me aware of this series: Cliffhangers, by Eric Weiner.
Funny name aside, he's done many works but most notable to me is ghostwriting for Fear Street Sagas so we'll see him again. This was a short lived series that is basically Goosebumps but all about the thrills. You got stuff like out of control busses. Speed for Kids?
They seemed quick and fun and of course I picked the goodies looking one. Alright so Meredith is doing a pizza delivery for some money. She loses the pizza but has the money to buy another so no one is the wiser.
But it turns out alongside the pizza was an envelope with 4 thousand dollars as the pizza place was paying off this dangerous guy who supplies the cheese in this town.
Yes. So they threaten to uh, deal with her if she doesn't somehow get that money they need.
This got pretty wild. These are all about thrills and man it has that. The writing is simple and in 2nd person to put you in her place. Short sentences to emphasize action and the chapters can be short. Like, often a page or 2 with literally just being one word.
It's like Stine's writing on steroids and it oddly works. It can be choppy but it's so fast paced that it's not too annoying. There is a fair bit talking but it is rather snappy. Meredith has a fun monolouge with her nature of lying and smooth talking.
Lying gets her into the trouble so we get a basic message that at least adds some substance. We also have a nice thing with mom, and how she works 2 jobs and they live on the wrong side of the tracks. Her words not mine.
Dad has been kicked out for being kinda shitty lately. Yes, really. He took some money from their checking account which actually comes into play. Although this sub thing isn't quite resolved.
Meredith has a thing with this nerdy guy and that leads to some snappy dialogue that adds to the fun. The mild romance felt kinda pointless tho.
It's a weird one. Solid climax but abrupt ending which makes sense for the whole thrills thing. There's talking and mild substance but it's all about the crazy fun.
I enjoyed this with the bigger stakes involving basically gangsters and that climax. I had a fair bit of fun as a crazy short read.
It's hardly high art but it's certainty fun. It works at what it does and I wanna try more. For now, this this was a wild fun ride.
As always, just have loose ideas for next read so…see ya then.
