Bonnie Campbell vows to make the best of a summer spent away from her school friends on remote Mermaid Island. Things get more interesting when Bonnie discovers the island is the home of a famous celebrity, but as time passes she begins to suspect that Mermaid Island may hold an even bigger secret. Is it possible the island has a real mermaid? Bonnie and her friends return in The Mermaid's Gift and Mermaid Dreams.
I met Judith at an author event this spring and agreed to review her book, Secret of Mermaid Island, the first of three mermaid books. Judith was so amicable that I wish I had more good things to say about her book. It's a readable story of a young girl who reluctantly travels to an island for the summer and falls in love with it. There is enough magic and wonder surrounding the discovery of a real mermaid that I think girls ages 7-10 would find the story charming. The cover is gorgeous, and writing is fairly well edited, but the characters never grabbed me, and the plot of saving the beach from developers was less than inspiring. This one just didn't stand out enough among so many other book choices for me to continue the series.
