Beautiful Sayers

Rate this book
Nine year old Beautiful Sayers wants nothing more than to be liked and accepted, and never stops trying to unlock the secret of finding her way into the hearts of others. Do unto others and love your enemies is what she has been taught, but it doesn't seem to work with her classmates who can't see past her bright red hair and two different colored eyes. She and her faithful dog Colby might just crack the code during one memorable summer in a small village on the banks of the Erie Canal in 1919.

Beautiful and heartwarming story

This well written story was a pleasant read and warmed my heart.
How can the reader not instantly fall in love with the main character, a sweat little girl named Beautiful who is always kind to everyone no matter how horribly they treat her. Although she is clearly loved by her family, the kids at school prefer to stay away from her. Beautiful is teased and bullied, mainly because of the fact that her eyes are different colours, and she does not understand why. She is so lifelike that you feel her sadness and almost want to go into the book to comfort her.
Beautiful's only friend is a girl named Sally until her older brother brings home a puppy for her. She names it Colby after her grandmother who passed away; the only friend she ever had aside from Sally.
Beautiful shared a very special bond with the puppy and was late for school one day because she lost track of time while spending time with her new best friend. Something horrible is done to her when she tried to enter the building, and I felt that the author did an excellent job at portraying everyone's reactions to it, just like she perfectly expressed all the characters' various emotions throughout the wonderful book.
Shortly after the incident, Beautiful becomes friends with a new neighbour who shows her how to stand up for herself and also teaches the neighbourhood kids how to play Stick-Ball. Unfortunately, something tragic happens during a game which made me gasp and also brought tears to my eyes.
The realistic story which contains drama is full of surprises.
The book is not long and flows very well. I read it in one sitting and absolutely adored every part of it.
I highly recommend this book to everyone. It will surely brighten up your day.

I was really tired last night, when I started to read Beautiful Sayers. I was just planning to read a few pages, but I kept reading, and fighting my need to sleep, until I finished the book a little after midnight. I kept telling myself I would just read one more chapter, but it didn't work.

Beautiful is a nine year old girl with too bright curly red hair, and eyes of different colors. She has one friend, who is a neighbor, and they grew up together. The other kids tease her about her name, and her one blue eye, and one brown eye. Beautiful had been taught to do undo others, as you would have others do unto you. She was a sweet kind girl, who didn't understand why the other kids didn't like her. She had a loving supportive family, and a big brother, who brought her a puppy to love. Then a new boy moved in next door. He was older than beautiful, an orphan living with his grandparents, he was crippled from polio, and he was Jewish. Simon taught Beautiful how to stand up to bullies. He also taught her, and the other kids, how to play stick ball, which united the group as friends.

This is a lovely book. I have read several of Jane McBride's book, and enjoyed all of them. She just keeps getting better as a writer.

Things aren't always what they seem. This is a very touching story, about unconditional love, about a little girl who had one eye color different than the other one, and how she was treated differently just because of that. As the story unfolds, there is an unexpected change or changes in the plot that is just amazing!
