“And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?” (4:40)
“With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.” (10:27)
“Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel's, But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.” (10:29-30)
“For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.” (10:45)
“And if any man say unto you, Why do ye this? say ye that the Lord hath need of him; and straightway he will send him hither.” (11:3)
“Having yet therefore one son, his wellbeloved, he sent him also last unto them, saying, They will reverence my son.” (12:6)
“Master, we know that thou art true, and carest for no man: for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth:” (12:14)
“Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.” (12:17)
“Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God?” (12:24)
“He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err.” (12:27)
“The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he: And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” (12:29-33)
“Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury: For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.” (Mark 12:43-44)
“And when ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, be ye not troubled: for such things must needs be; but the end shall not be yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows.” (13:7-8)
“And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven.” (13:26-27)
“Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is. For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch. Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning: Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.” (13:32-37)
“She hath done what she could.” (‭‭14:8)
“And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.” (‭14:36)
“And the chief priests accused him of many things: but he answered nothing. And Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? behold how many things they witness against thee. But Jesus yet answered nothing; so that Pilate marvelled.” (‭15:3-5‬)
“And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.” (‭15:15‬)

I miss reading the Christmas story, since Mark starts with John the Baptist's ministry. Mark was the first gospel I read through when I was little (and yes, I admit I first chose it because it was the shortest), and it holds a special place in my heart.

This time around I decided to do a deeper study of it instead of just a casual reading, and it was very uplifting.

I guess I never really paid much attention before to just how much Mark added in his gospel that isn't in the other Gospels. For example, Salome—the mother of James and John, the sons of Zebedee—is only in the Gospel of Mark (15:40 and 16:1), and only Mark recorded Jesus prophesying that the rooster would crow twice (14:29-30, 68, 72).

Anyway, it's been an enlightening read for sure. There was a lot I learned, but it'd take too long to write it all here. So I encourage you to read through Mark yourself. 😉 I hope you have a blessed time reading it!

As he taught, he said, “Beware of the
scribes, who like to walk around in long
robes, and to be greeted with respect in
the marketplaces, 39 and to have the best
seats in the synagogues and places of
honor at banquets! 40 They devour
widows’ houses and for the sake of
appearance say long prayers. They will
receive the greater condemnation.”

Mark 12: 38-40

Many of Mark is identical to The Gospel Matthew. The latter was supposedly inspired by Mark, which explains this one seeming like a summary of the other.

The Book of Mark is a masterclass in storytelling that will leave you breathless and awe-struck. This gospel, the shortest of the four, packs a punch with its vivid language, powerful imagery, and fast-paced narrative that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

At the heart of this gospel is the figure of Jesus Christ, who comes bursting into the world like a bolt of lightning, performing miracles, healing the sick, and preaching the kingdom of God with a fervor that is impossible to ignore. Mark portrays Jesus as a man of action, always on the move, always pushing forward, always challenging the status quo. He captures the urgency of his message and the radicalness of his teachings, conveying the sense that something truly revolutionary is happening here.

But it's not just the character of Jesus that makes this book so compelling. Mark also does a masterful job of portraying the other players in this drama, from the conflicted disciples who are constantly struggling to understand Jesus' message, to the scheming Pharisees who seek to bring him down. No one is a mere caricature in this gospel; everyone is complex, nuanced, and deeply human, with their own flaws and motivations that drive them forward.

At its core, the Book of Mark is a story about the collision of two worlds: the world as it is, and the world as it could be. Through Jesus' teachings and actions, we see the possibility of a new way of living, one that is rooted in love, compassion, and justice. But we also see the forces that seek to resist this transformation, that cling to the old ways and seek to maintain the status quo at all costs.

In his masterful storytelling, Mark manages to convey all of this and more, weaving together a narrative that is at once gripping, thought-provoking, and deeply moving. Whether you're a believer or a skeptic, this gospel is a must-read for anyone who wishes to understand one of the most influential figures in human history, and the enduring impact of his message.

“But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins,” (Mark 2:10)
Christ the servant coming to save sinners. His care for every soul is so beautifully evident throughout this book. But not at the expense of God’s will. Every miracle He did was focused on glorifying His Father and pointing to His authority to save souls. Is there a better message? Is there a better focus?
Is there a better example for us? It’s so easy to get caught up in caring for everyone’s physical needs that we forget their souls. Christ, the perfect, made it very clear what was the most important to focus on. “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Mark 8:36-37) And as we go about serving our Savior by bringing others to Him, He will be there with us. This side of heaven, I don’t think there is a better promise.
So read it, over and over again. You will get to know our precious Savior ever more deeply.

Mark's account of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, my Lord and Saviour. He is no longer in the grave according to Mark 16:6 - "And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him."

Then Jesus proclaimed in Mark 16: 16-18 - "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." These are some of my favourite verses of the Bible. It says those who believe if you do not believe this scripture will not be made manifested in your life.

Bless the name of Jesus!

The Gospel of St. Mark the Apostle was written with the Romans and the Gentiles in mind. St. Mark explains Jewish customs assuming that the reader wouldn't know or understand. St. Mark's Gospel focuses a lot more on what Jesus did, than what he said, it is also the shortest one among the four Gospels. One of my favourite verses of St. Mark's Gospel is Mark 14:38: "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."
This verse really reminds me of the many letters that St. Paul wrote to the churches, it is very commanding and direct.

Each of the four Gospel writers were inspired of the Holy Ghost [hence the Gospels are infallible, inerrant, inspired] with a different "theme." The theme of Mark presents Christ as the Servant of the Lord [a servant needs no pedigree so the Gospel starts at John's baptism]. Matthew presents Christ as the King of the Jews, Luke= the Son of Man, and John = the Deity of Christ i.e., the Son of God.
The Gospel of Mark is a gospel of action [a servant's work is his brand, so to speak], The Lord Jesus Christ does His work perfectly and provides salvation for all who will receive Him. Great book!

This memoir/ ancient biography of Jesus presents him as the Son of God; the Messiah, and shows how this is revealed by God at his baptism and transfiguration especially. It also presents him as the true Son of Man especially in the garden of Gethsemane and in his crucifixion where his weakness is in full display. It shows also why and how his arrival is ‘good news’ through his healings of the sick; his setting the demon oppressed free, the forgiveness of sins, the raising of the dead. It explains his purpose in coming as being to ransom the human race through his suffering.

I had not realised the importance of the four gospels with regards to perspective. Each of the four authors witnessed some or all of the events in Christ's last years, yet all have recorded slightly different accounts, showing that everyone sees things through their own lens and conditioning. I think this lends credence to the accounts.

Second book of the New Testament. A gospel, or history, about Jesus from Matthew’s POV.

Starts with John the Baptist preparing the way to Jesus crucifixion, including Herod and John. There are many miracles of healing and casting out devils. Jesus teachings on healing on the Sabbath, divorce and the little children. The stories of the sower, the candle stick, mustard seed, the rich man and feeding the multitudes.

Fave verse: Mark 4:17 ‘And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word’s sake, immediately they are offended.’
