When this book says Beginner it means Beginner. If you've gone on a trip before, you probably already know most of what this book will cover.
Also, it is mostly addressing the "gap year" style backpacking where you are in urban environments and has very little to do with the "outdoor" style of backpacking and camping. It does talk about both, but if you're planning a hike in the woods I'd say look for something else.
