As a Martial Artist, Fitness Coach (and writer) I have been lucky enough to train all around the globe, in locations as diverse as China, Thailand, the USA and many places within the UK, all within a variety of fascinating styles; from Chinese Kickboxing (Sanda), Shaolin Kung Fu, TaeKwonDo, Thai Boxing and Escrima to more esoteric styles such as Xingyi and Chi Gong.
Along this journey I have also been fortunate to have first hand experience training with leading authorities including world champions, Chinese masters and stars of film and TV.
Easy to read, understand and put into action, based on more complex theories. These principles may be used in everyday interactions. There were some tedious editing errors.
A good book, it takes the text/self-help book style of introducing people to sports science. the main difference between Sports Science and coaching is the Sports Science has more to do with how to deal with competition. The books start by outlining the goals of Sports Science, then the history, and the techniques that are to be used in it. The final section of the book is putting everything together how to think and behave preparing for, during, and after the event you are training for. Even though all this book is geared more towards combat sports, the parts of how to deal with nerves and stress or the flight or fight response is useful in everyday life.
This book is more of a guide for people looking to go further in Sports Science, the good thing about this book is that a number of studies are quoted, and we are given a overview of the results of the study. This way anybody wanting to learn more about a particular study could very easily look it up themselves. Even though Sports Science, has moved on in leaps and bounds in recent years. there are still invasions and discoveries being made everyday. This is a quick and easy guide to a huge subject. This is not (and it is not supposed to be) a be all and end all book on the subject, this book is basics you are expected to try the practical sections but to also do your own research to help your development. To me this is the strength of the book as you get useable knowledge and a starting point to look further.
Disappointing...There is no depth here, as the book only skims the surface of mental training and preparation for combat sports...It seemed like I was reading an expanded version of the subject on Wikipedia.
Q: Have you ever met someone you considered confident and relaxed and wondered how they managed to be so composed? The real secret to beating stress and taking control of your mind is to accept that no one is born immune to stress. We all experience it. We all have the choice of how to handle it. Those who appear unfazed by tense situations start by simply “acting” unfazed until it ultimately becomes a reality. The simplest way to manage a long-term, positive mental change like this is summed up by a great phrase: “Fake it until you make it!” We already know that the mind has a powerful control over the body. You can use this principle of acting calm to become calm to establish long-term benefits for your mind and body by emulating the mannerisms of confident and relaxed people. The more often you “fake it” (act in the way you would like to feel), the more often the brain begins to change and accept this change as agreeable. The more times your brain accepts this change, the more permanent the effects become. Eventually, they will take a fixed place in your personality. For example, every time you feel stressed, take a moment to breathe deeply and imagine yourself being calm and confident. Begin doing this once or twice a day, but continue until you reach four, five, or six times a day. One day you will wake up and realize that you now ARE calm most of the time and with that has come the natural confidence. It has even been shown that mentally imagining someone fictional, with a confident demeanor, and trying to emulate that person can have similar benefits. If a situation starts to create stress and discomfort, imagine what your confident fictional hero might do. - How would James Bond react? - What would that confident President or Politician do? - How would that popular movie star respond? It may sound odd, but these mental exercises have been shown to stimulate confidence. From confidence comes relaxation and positive action. (c)
Very interesting book. As a martial artist, coach and trainer, I have been practicing and applying many of the techniques discussed in this book for quite some time now. There is always more to learn though. I would definitely recommend this book to anybody interested in building a better understanding of the psychological effects that stress has on physical performance, and useful methods of training and controlling your mind. This book is filled with useful information, techniques and exercises. Well done Mr.Pierce!
It was ok...I have read a number of books very similar to this. The author is knowledgeable and portrays his understanding very well. The book covers a good amount of ground to give someone a sound understanding of mental agility, albeit, I found most of the time he was stating the obvious, (however this could be due to the plethora of other titles I have read akin to this one.) A solid 3 from me.....
Not impressed. Although the books begins with a nice historical introduction to sport psychology, it merely slides on the surface of the matter. I understand that probably it is meant to be read by athletes and people who have general understanding of sport psychology but I would not recommend it. The author tries to present universal techniques and advices which in reality would not work without deeper understanding or supervision. I would recommend using this book only as guide to further reading on all concepts and techniques mentioned. Definitely a 3.
I would like to give it a 3.5... some of the suggestions are very good, but overall I felt like the author was stretching the material by being redundant and off topic. A good third of the book doesn't really pertain to the theme thus causing me to skin and skip whole sections.
This would be better as a seminar rather than a book.
An informative book that really opens the door for understanding sports psychology and it makes it easy to put in to practice. It is a little surface level and can be a little repetitive (this could be intentional though) but anyone looking to get a grasp on the psychological side sport can begin here with confidence.
What an absolutely great book!! Not only to get mentally prepared for a fight but a lot of the skills can be transferred to everyday life. I’ll likely buy a copy of the book to transfer my notes over!
A good guide into the mental state of the high performing athletes and what can we take from them to the world of performance in other life situations. As in many cases of high stress, high stakes situations it boils down to mindfulness and being prepared with the right training and rituals.
Good fundamental information. It is good to have many ideas confirmed, a lot brought together and better organized to make more useable. Not much about big breakthroughs but stuff that should be regularly reviewed
Your on half way through chapter 5 before they even start to give advice rather than keep telling how great the book is !! Teaches you nothing . Disappointed.
It took me just over two hours to finish this book- with admittedly some skim reading. It was good to get my number of books read for the year up towards my goal - that is why I gave it two stars.
Contained the details, brevity, advertisements and originality of a buzzfeed clickbait article unfortunately. Could be useful for those just wanting to join the competitive spirts world though.
I listened to the Audible audio version of this book.
"An Excellent Audiobook For Mental Motivation"
MENTAL COMBAT is an exceptional audiobook on sports psychology and performance. Whether you're in a competition or not, there are some good practical skills to be learned here. Staying focused and positive is key to being successful. This book teaches you mind hacks, eliminating fear, posture, overcoming or managing anxiety as well as many other things one can do to stay ahead of your competition. This is a terrific book, written by PHIL PIERCE, that can be applied to anything you want to do. Training the largest muscle in your body; your mind.
JAY PRICHARD does an outstanding job narrating this audiobook. He speaks clearly, has a good pace, and has a positive attitude that resonates well with the listener. In my case, me. I'd definitely recommend listening to this to improve your skills as an athlete or for motivation in any endeavor.
Audiobook received in exchange for an honest review.
I don't really knowing how I feel about this book. What I was expecting was a book that that would help me increase my mental defenses. That doesn't seem to be the set up of the book though. it felt more as a summary of different researches about sport psychology. That is probably the reason why it didn't became a favorite, but it is not bad...
Some very good tips and tricks for life, competition, fitness etc. Well Worth a read. This book has helped me with my depression and I would like to thank the author for that.
Not terribly in depth, a fairly light read that kept me interested. Just enough to spark further curiosity in the field. Great tips on how to improve your own mental game throughout.
