The Christian religion is part of the fabric of American culture. Every day, each of us encounters it in some form. We may have grown so accustomed to it that it barely even registers with us anymore, but it’s there in the background. I’ve felt its influence my entire life. Church played a significant role in social life and religious language was part of the vernacular. As a teenager, a religious experience prompted me to dedicate myself to vocational Christian ministry and the advancement of the Gospel. When a dramatic change like this happens, it’s generally met with favor from others. They offer words of encouragement and admiration for your willingness to “get your life right” and to walk the narrow road. But what do you do when the narrow road comes to a dead end? This is my story. Looking back at who I was helped me determine who I want to be, and watching religion crumble and fail helped me determine what to leave out of my life as I rebuilt it. I know I’m not alone. Maybe your story is similar to mine or maybe right now you’re at a place similar to where I was. Maybe you’re starting to see your answers fall short or maybe you’re just naturally curious. Wherever you are in your journey, I invite you to walk with me for a moment through mine. Laugh, be challenged, and be encouraged. We’re each a lot of things. But at the center of them all, we’re human.
